excellent set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Brian in UK and Andrew Waterloo, you dodging the question.
  10:05am Listener Gregory:

The real question is why the label is called "A Hawk and a Hacksaw" when the quote from Hamlet is, "I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Listener Gregory, dropping knowledge! (but still dodging the question).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:07am Artie Haywire:

Avatar 10:23am Jesse K:

Doug, you're killing me this morning I can't get any work done. I have to walk just down the hall to the printer but I can't leave this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

The thing about this music: IT'S COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Jesse K
Killing me is an interesting choice of words, considering many of these are from horror flicks.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:25am Brian in UK:

Must admit I never watch horror ficks. Why go out of your way to be frightened when everyday things do such a good job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Stanley:

Pleasantly wandering into Explorer's Room territory methinks with that last one
Avatar 10:32am Jesse K:

HI!
Avatar 10:33am hyde:

awwww, man. I missed everything up to the giallo set because they said it was going to rain, so I figured I'd go out and weed until it rained. AND THEN IT NEVER RAINED!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Weed ruins a lot in our lives, hyde. Just say no.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35am Brian in UK:

@hyde use the toilet like the rest of us!!
  10:35am βrian:

Horror flicks? Was the Tenant a horror flick? That was a good one.
Avatar 10:36am hyde:

the thing about weeds is that they've evolved to live in disturbed soil. so you go out and pull them up, thus disturbing the soil and creating a perfect weed growing environment. you can't win.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

Fuck weeds, hyde.
Avatar 10:38am hyde:

@βrian i'd say it was. the book too, which is also great.
Avatar 10:39am hyde:

weeds do sorta suck. but i admit a grudging admiration. more delicate species just fade away, but suckers like crabgrass will be here long after we are gone.
  10:41am βrian:

"A weed is a plant whose virtue has yet to be discovered." (Or some such.)
Avatar 🥁 10:42am βrian:

Wow, I just got sucked up into the auditory vortex. Was that just the stream?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43am Brian in UK:

I see that US attorneys are filling their boots now; being hired by top FIFA officials even though no charges are filed yet. This one will run and run.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Alex In Illinois:

Then there is the other approach: Instead of having a lawn, have a "meadow" planted with completely native grasses and plants, and just don't maintain it. Here in Oak Park, there are a few households that do it that way. Some of those native plants are considered weeds for most lawn owners, but just part of the "meadow".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

I think it was a slasher from the previous attacking the poor Peruvians. Ouch!
Avatar 10:43am hyde:

@βrian: heh, I heard that too. true. also some weeds are delicious, a lot of my purslane and lamb's quarter will end up in salad.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:45am Brian in UK:

Great set, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

"Meadow" is a nice bit of semantic hocus-pocus, Alex in Illinois!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

You back from the vortex yet, βrian?
Avatar 10:46am hyde:

@Alex that's actually what i'm working on. i turned over a big chunk of my lawn to local plants like coneflowers, black eyed susan, tickseed, queen anne's lace, sunflowers and shasta daisies. it'll be good once it all takes, but for now I need to fight off the crabgrass and clover a bit.
10:46am Jeff g. at eye doc:

What I don't know about weeds and plants would fill many many meadows.

I can sweep a mean stoop, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

You stoop do conquer, Jeff Golick
Avatar 10:52am chromaphone:

What a sensitive and beautiful use of synthesizer :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Alex In Illinois:

@Hyde: I guess I am glad that I still live in a condo for now. I guess going native is not as easy as some folks make it sound. Crab grass is a bummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

You are an appreciator of fine things, chromaphone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Alex In Illinois:

I liked the Gegaw, or Jaw harp, or Jews Harp or Guimbard or whatever you want to call it that was in that Recuerdame track.

  11:04am Mark Williams:

a second Red Stripe? why thank you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Alex In Illinois:

@Doug: I misspelled that. There is supposed to be an e at the end: guimbarde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Guimbarde it is! All hail the guimbarde!
  11:06am Mark Williams:

it would be interesting to make a list of all the studio production sounds of the last half century and line up all the distinctive drum sounds each studio/producer managed to create. Lee Perry's "Black Ark" sound in that regard is easily recognized at all times.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

G*r*e*a*t is even better than just plain great.
  11:18am Mark Williams:

@Hyde - distinctive drum sounds are such a key part of recordings, I find. Took me a long time to realize that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

From a Jamaican slang glossary:

@Mark Williams same here. Watusi by the Orlons is one of my all time fave r + b songs, Took me years to realize the drum track was one of the biggest reasons why.
