Hawaiian music, seemingly of the shmaltzy variety, on vinyl is encountered with a curious regularity in the thrift store piles. Explain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

If I had any guts, I'd be cueing up some Fat Elvis right about now, bobdc.

@still b/p
Apply a little baking soda and seltzer and the schmaltz comes right out.

Elvis Costello?
Avatar 9:35am Cecile:

Doug, seeing this little mention of Hawaii, do you have any Samoan or Maori choral singing. it's really beautiful.
Avatar 🥁 9:35am bobdc:

There's some good skinny Elvis stuff from Hawaii, too. He did a great concert there in 1961 right after the army where Boots Randolph is playing some totally out shit with him. elvispresleyphotos.com... has some nice history and pictures.
Avatar 9:36am ausmanx:

any mention of Maori and it's time for me to jump in and say hello all. tonight's episodes are actually set in Samoa too. goodness, that place looks kind of nice...
Avatar 9:37am Cecile:

sbp, sometimes there is good stuff buried in those records.

What episodes, aumanx?
Avatar 9:39am ausmanx:

it's a fishing program made for Maori television, cecile. 30 bloody episodes, most of it in Maori (though the eps where they spoke Rapanui are proving tricky to find a translator for!). they can be pretty brutal with their sea creatures!
Avatar 9:40am Cecile:

Nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome, ausmanx! Greetings, Cecile!
Avatar 9:42am Cecile:

The Maori media are pretty cool. I have been following them because of my Taika Waititi/Jemaine Clement obsession. but fortunately, my Maori is limited to "kia ora". I have a habit of taking things too far.

Fridays With Maori! Funny!
Avatar 9:52am ausmanx:

haka's the tribal dance the NZ rugby team does before a game to intimidate the opponents, a great tradition. biggest sporting controversy in Oz this year was when an indigenous player celebrated a goal by mimicking a spear throwing dance and white Australians were intimidated. the kiwis have been doing it for years!

Avatar 🥁 9:56am bobdc:

Elvis does some blues thing where you could say that in Boots' solo he ventures further away from traditional scales. I'll try to find a link to send you. Out shit for the teenage girls who were listening, anyway.
Avatar 9:56am Cecile:

really, ausmanx? that just seems silly. in some rugby matches between indigenous Aussie teams and the NZ All-blacks they take turns doing their dances.
Avatar 9:57am Cecile:

Same with the Samoan teams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Alex In Illinois:

What about the bird called a Kiwi? Are those birds dangerous, or vicious or violently defensive like geese or swans? (Swans actually kill people).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
"Out Shit for Teenage Girls" was my second choice for my radio show name!
Avatar 10:00am Cecile:

kiwis are pretty mild-mannered.
Avatar 10:00am ausmanx:

cecile, it was completely pathetic, and the clearest demonstration that white Australia is totally uncomprehending of indigenous culture (the player in question was Australian of the Year 2 years earlier!). those photos are pretty good, doug... maori tattoos are genuinely scary. kiwis are pussycats, alex... NZ did have the Moa thought, that was one mean bird (extinct now though, like lots of NZ creatures)

I hope kiwis are not too defenseless. It is a good thing they are not extinct. I read of one Polynesian bird that was rendered extinct by one lighthouse keeper's cat.
Avatar 10:03am Cecile:

crazy. My dad used to go drink in an indigenous bar after work sometimes, and he's say he'd often be the only white guy in there. They treated him great. then again, he was a pro barfly for a lotta years.

Avatar 10:08am ausmanx:

yep, they\re trying some pretty radical stuff in NZ. we have the same problem with cats here in Australia (they reckon there are 20 million feral cats here, and they're estimated to kill three native animals PER DAY). Canberra has already banned people who own cats from allowing them outside their houses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

Wow. What a 24 hours for the High Court. I should break in with some Supremes or something. I am elated.

Doug, what is the meaning of the title of this song, "Jappa"? Surely there is a story here.
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

did anyone see Inside Out? I recommend it, even though the ads make it seem goofy. It's a small aside, but their analysis of the feline brain is hilarious.

Avatar 10:13am ndbob:

@Doug yw - I was super pleased with the ACA decision - I was a little nervous - paticularly since I have ACA coverage - I called it right at 6-3 - what surprised me though was the strength of the majority opinion - I feared a narrower ruling that would have based it on the discretion given to the IRS - but that didn't happen .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Hello βrian of the Isthmus!

@Listener Gregory
I do not know the story of Jappa. I will happily spend hours searching for it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

@Cecile: I dropped two 11-year-old girls off at Inside Out, and regret not going in. On the flip side, I did get to walk Court St. (Brooklyn's High Street, of a sort) with my wife for a couple of hours.
Avatar 10:20am Cecile:

Phil Austin on his talent, from the NYT obit: “I got a job in a radio station because I could always do that with my voice — could make you believe that I was committed to the words coming out of my mouth. I mistakenly believed, therefore, that I was an actor. I’m not. I’m a musician. Interesting that it was the sounds of the words that got to me most. The Firesign Theater was the vehicle that allowed me to make that discovery.”
