That indie/zine era of the 1980s and early 1990s where people could be in slacker bands and exist happily even if they didn’t break big was great. Punk rock beatniks.

Howdy Mr. M and fellow listeners. If I had a band I'm sure it would suck like Electrolux.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

In fact, it would probably be CALLED Electrolux.

@ Ike - Looks like it would go well with the Dr. Who theme, doesn't it?
  10:33pm
JakeGould:

@PSS: Where did your animation come from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
pacific standard simon:

You DID mispronounce Salina, KS. That's a long "I".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Uncle Michael:

sa-LIE-na
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Ike:

@PSS, maybe the outer-space disco dance version of the Dr. Who theme, if such a thing exists. Or "Doctorin' the TARDIS."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
pacific standard simon:

Jake, it was on one of those animated gif web sites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Uncle Michael:

Simon, was the Outhouse a thing yet in Lawrence when you were there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
pacific standard simon:

The name doesn't ring a bell, Michael, but I know there was one other place to see bands besides the Opera House. I saw the Bongos there.

Aloha Dave and you all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

The Outhouse was a shithole in a field about 10 miles east of downtown that was a really important stop on the punk circuit for a time. I was there just once.

There's an unwritten rule during weekdays that whenever somebody plays Voivod, a commenter has to comment, "VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVVVVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDD!!!" But since this is the weekend and a different crowd and I'm indifferent to Voivod, I'm not going to bother.

cheri:

I love the show so far, dave! real great interview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
coelacanth:

haha! i thought you might say that! well- it's not the dude it's the nature of the gif that disturbed me! (and of course i exaggerate...but it does look like you're turning off a surveillance camera.)

That band experience isn't any less realistic and valid than a lot of people's college years.
  11:06pm
JakeGould:

@PSS: Or writing. I wrote professionally on a few occasions. But found out I could make more money half-awake doing computer work. So I made the decision that computer work is my “day job” and the writing is a hobby when I can do it. Ditto with art.

I miss the days where one could just randomly walk around downtown and pay $5 to catch some show. I guess that still happens in Bushwick to an extent, but it’s still different from the experience of being in the core of Manhattan and impulsively saying, “Ehhhh… For $5 how bad can this band be?” Seems like I have to plan all of my explorations into new/live stuff nowadays.
  11:18pm
