My new work schedule means I'm in situ at noon ET, not in or soon to be in transit.

It isn't a newspaper. It's a page from the Richard Henry Dana novel.

I hafta buy a new car. I hate cars. Any suggestions? I'm thinking as cheap as possible: Hyundai, Mazda, Lamborghini...

Mazda's are very good. Hyundais give great value. Lambos will get you laid.

The Cross Trek is very nice...until you realize how much you pay for how it looks and see what a similarly equipped Forrester costs.
Avatar 12:20pm
Carmichael:

Hondas are a little more expensive, but the total cost of ownership is very low. Hyundai SUVs are very popular these days, but I don't know much about their maintenance record.
  12:21pm
Dean:

Thanks, UM, but I'm really looking for a vehicle comprising all three benefits. Yeah, used is an option.

Thought of Subaru, too, VP, but 1) the local dealer is also a Ford dealer and I'm sick and tired of them , and 2) I don't live in Oregon or Washington.

Pickup won't work, βrian, unless I relegate the kids to the bed where they can roll around.

Great advice, all. Thank you. Keep it coming!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Uncle Michael:

Hondas seem to be resting on laurels they earned in the '80s and '90s. They're not as bulletproof as they once were.

I was in buying mode not long ago when I was facing an expensive repair on a 13 year-old car. I avoided the repair but I was very close to choosing the mazda CX-5.
  12:23pm
Dean:

Exactly what my auto repair person told me, UM.

Good idea, TC. There's a dealership just blocks from our house.

Thought of leasing, too. Downside is I can't come up with a business write-off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Uncle Michael:

The CrossTek I liked priced out over 30k with all the goodies I couldn't resist.
  12:24pm
Dean:

Same situation here, UM: a 13YO car in need of new oil gasket, struts/shocks, and new transmission. Other than that, she hums like a Ferrari, except for the funky electrical issues with the auto-locks and the trunk.

If they still made Volvos, I'd recommend a sedan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Uncle Michael:

They still make Volvos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Uncle Michael:

Volvos aren't bargains.

I'd recommend VW but for two things. Most of the dealers are shitheads (not all...you might be lucky) and parts are EXPENSIVE.
Avatar 12:26pm
Carmichael:

SUVs are always a good choice. You can seat 4 or 5, and also haul around all the associated kid gear.
  12:26pm
Dean:

Also thinking a Harley with a sidecar for the kids. But then I'd have to invest in leathers and get tattoos.

Maybe a horse? But I need one with get-up-and-go. Any chance I can find a 200HP horse?
Avatar 12:27pm

They stopped making Volvos in 1998. The brand name is still in use, but who wants to drive a logo?
Avatar 12:27pm

Oh, and Hi Tony!
Avatar 12:28pm
V Priceless:

Hyundai was OK - drove a Genesis (fantastic) and a Santa Fe, but I discovered their financing tactics were down-right criminal, so never again with them.

cool thing about the Cross Trek is it has more of a car footprint to it than a larger SUV. Plus, their add campaign features dogs driving them, so what's not to like?

On the subject of cars: I'm currently driving a very well-cared-for, 20-year-old automobile that, I sense, is getting ready to give up the ghost. Just hoping the most recent thousand dollar repair gets us through the summer voyages (mostly to and from camp). I've learned to ignore the "engine oil low" and "check coolant" warnings, as they are not accurate, but the recent appearance of "brake light circuit" did give me pause.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm

Speaking of classical prog, about an hour ago i was listening to Chris Squire's epic "Safe (Canon Song)" from his 70s solo album. It blew my teenage mind when i heard it once on late night radio, still sounds pretty worthy, although a bit bombastic for my current tastes...

@ The Pot Man: In the case of Hillage, I far prefer him with Gong. I do like "Fish Rising" though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm

Hillage's "Fish Rising" is the best of both worlds: basically a solo LP, but with all of the classic Gong lineup (minus Daevid) playing on it...

which album had his version of Hurdy Gurdy Man on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

That was "L".
  2:19pm
Dean:

Can't get started in the pre-PG/post-PG Genesis dispute, nor the Yes/solo matter. My tastes tend to be conservative. But Hillage: as Cw-e notes, FR is pretty much a Gong album, and one listens to Gong for Gong, Hillage for Hillage. Khan remains masterful. The solo albums are hit-miss, but the recent issues of live shows from the '70s are killer. I also enjoy System 7.

HGM was on L.

System 7 live completely blew me away a couple of years ago, total mastery...
Avatar 2:22pm
V Priceless:

not taking anything away from Gabriel, or Banks, mind you - it's just that Hackett was a cornerstone in the compositional element; it's obvious to hear the slide after "Wind and Wuthering"...though I dig "And Then There Where Three" and "Duke"...the challenging musical element (to my ear, at least) started waning after Steve's departure...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm

@Tony Yeah, some Canterbury scene purists don't want to talk about Spirogyra, see them as a separate entity whose only link to Canterbury was a geographical one (whereas Egg, National Health, etc. had no direct geographical links but are considered quintessentially "Canterbury"). But Barbara Gaskin went on to sing with Hatfield and the North, and Geoffrey Richardson from Caravan was briefly in late-period Spirogyra, so they were definitely part of the soup...

There is a St. Radigunds Road down in Dover. She was popular in these parts!

Richard Sinclair from Caravan used to show up for jams and parties at the Spirogyra house, and Martin C recently caught up with him in Italy. A couple of members of Spirogyra ended up in one of his bands before he left England. And his first (unrecorded) band post Hatfield was called "Sinclair and the South" (Bruford was involved in one gig). OK, enough of this Canterbury scene geek-out, i'm going to sit back and enjoy this Curtis Mayfield!

@ Tony - nice job revisiting the soul groove!

I distinctly remember wandering into Middle Earth Records in Downey, CA, while National Health was playing over the system, pre-first album. The clerks identified the band to me and indicated Bruford was drumming. Must have been an early tape. Middle Earth was, so the story goes, the home of Amazing Korneyfone.

Oh, look. There's the Jolly Sailor.

Hah. Skunkworks!

@βrian: You're following the line of the old city wall. The old Northgate used to arch over the street between Skunkworks and The Jolly Sailor. Further down was the 19th century red-light district (closest to the military barracks), disreputable music halls, etc. Now it's just drunk students...

The Jolly Sailor has a U.S. flag in the corner window. I'm perplexed.

I think there was some kind of 4th of July themed event (with a bluegrass band, etc.)

They have a Fourth of July in England?

I skip from the third to the fifth, too. Boy are my ankles tired.

@βrian: Indeed, Canterbury's great for cycling. All kinds of quirky shortcuts, etc. And a nightmare to drive around, according to my driving friends. Medieval walled cities just aren't very car-compatible.
