"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

the Canterbury wood-elf:

I saw a Patti Smith concert in London a few years ago (where she was backed by A Silver Mt. Zion) where she unexpectedly brought the Master Musicians of Joujouka onstage with her and played free-jazz clarinet with them (they seemed cool with that). Then Flea came out and started jamming with them on bass (I kid you not). Pretty far out evening...

did flea's arrival seem the universe's way of saying 'not so fast', or did everything just collapse into ecstasy from there?

Flea (who I had never really given much thought prior to this) got seriously in the zone and tuned into the MMoJ, while Patti was just letting it rip on the clarinet and shouting some stream-of-consciousness poetry about Pan. He and the MMoJ were truly listening to each other, and the Joujoukans enthusiastically embraced him afterwards, so yeah, it was pretty ecstatic. I think it destroyed a lot of people's preconceptions. The fact Patti befriended him in the first place had made me think there must be more to him than I'd been led to believe (and the last thing I heard was that he'd shelved his career to go back to college and study music theory!). But none of this inspires me to listen to the RHCPs...

The best thing Flea ever did was Young MC's Bust A Move.

Haven't really dug the Chili Peppers' output in quite a while, but I have no doubt of Flea's skills and general love of music. Check the induction speech he did for Metallica at the RRHOF, especially the section about Cliff Burton, dude gets it.

so most of the character count on the comments usurped by Flea. how fitting

If it's any consolation John, I have a high yellow star count on the playlist this morning. Some interesting things that I need to investigate further.
