Moroccan Berber poet, scholar, translator and teacher El Habib Louai was inspired to write by the Beat Poets, who famously were inspired by travels to his home country. His love is not unrequited: Habib recently won a scholarship to the Naropa Institute's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics - which was founded by Beat Poets Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, Diane di Prima and kindred spirit John Cage.
El Habib Louai's work includes translating poetry from English into the Berber language of his home region in southern Morocco, as well as into Classical Arabic. He joins us along with a couple of musical fellow travelers for Arabic-language musical interpretations of poems by Ginsberg and Amiri Baraka as well as Berber sung-poetry and lots more.
