Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from July 21, 2015 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

@coelacanth: Oh yeah! I remember seeing slightly more beat up versions of those trucks around Brooklyn in the 1970s, but same basic shape.

hey artists, I'm getting back in the cartooning game. Derwent is OK for fancy drawing, but I'm looking for a workhorse wood pencil to do penciling that will erase nicely. Any ideas?

Collector's World just ran a long article about cassette culture and traders and companies that specialized in them. Fascinating stuff.

wtf drum machine does the snare drum in that song. its so grimy
Avatar 3:41pm

I didn't trade, but I knew traders, and own a number of good cassettes both homebrew and commercial. But I just never enjoyed the whole rewinding thing. Hard to skip through them too.

From a historical/replayable/aspect I hope all is not lost to modern technology.

im not a big cassette guy but part of the appeal to me is the inconvenience of skipping around, being forced to sit there and listen... the ease of having all i want all the time (i.e. neurotically clicking around my iTunes library and anything-you-want-in-30-seconds private torrent sites) ultimately has a kind of numbing effect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm

@steve: I find now it's more about the having access to it all - in itself: a billion channels, & it's about seeing what's on - not watching anything! My attention span has deffo changed. It's all about streams & podcasts being constantly updated & which I'll never ever catch up w/...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...altho' the streams & 'casts I favor feature a good %age of 'Retro'...)
  3:57pm
JakeGould:

@coelacanth: “people didn't just throw stuff out. they made them last.” Post war industrialization will do that to a manufacturing infrastructure. same reason why tons of Japanese toys from the 1950s to 1970s are all made with amazing, intricate quality. You have a whole infrastructure built around creating precision tools for war but there is no war so what can you do?
Avatar 3:58pm
steve:

ha, yeah lately ive been concerned about my attention span too

Stop paying attention to your attention span, but instead focus on the attention girth.

Cecile:

people used to complain about us 80s kids being wasteful, but we were like depression kids compared to a lot of people today, greenmarketing notwithstanding.
  4:16pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: Depends on which part of the 1980s. The mid-to-later part of the 1980s Reaganomics was making the U.S. really a piggish mess. Earlier in the 1980s it was just like the 1970s in many ways.

@Jake: hm - dunno. I just mean the UK biz guys had some organizing skills & ambition. People like the Beatles themselves were Post-War in other ways...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...far as I'm concerned, it was certainly a drag to leave home & hit the real world just as Reagan's 80s began. I'm right in there w/ the Grungemeisters, age-wise...

Well, in a lot of places, but where I was, the indie/DIY/punk crowd took pride in being pretty frugal, mostly out of necessity, but they never really went crazy when they got money.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The bizness model of making things well, so you'll like me & do biz w/ me - deffo went the way of Trickle Down economics. The rich are rich & they are not hiring & do not care about you. It's a nice old WWII idea of things that you could only belive in if you haven't paid attention to reality for several decades. Make a buck as fast as you can - screw workers, screw the environment, screw consumers, screw the country. We don't know the product or the customer, & we don't care - it's owned by a larger co. which is owned by an even larger one - we are biznessmen & lawyers & we are useless. Music is just the canary in the coalmine for illustrating this. It's yer food & shoes & housing & job as well...It only *looks* the same as it used to be on the surface.

No, But Al did email me when I was at ATP when I asked if I could record his performance to take back to WFMU (I took The Ex, Country Teasers, a few others with me). He said he loved FMU, and especially Scharpling, but the logistics of his audio set up and engineering for live shows would mean that it would be next to impossible to get it sounding good for radio. But still...
