first show without parents was a local punk/hardcore show which somehow got booked at my friend's high school in Emerson NJ, which was shut down 2/3 of the way through due to rioting. it seemed like the most magical thing as a 13 year old.

i'm shocked to say one of the long forgotten hardcore bands at that show recently reformed and released a new album and Pat Byrne played a song off it a few weeks ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth:

my best impression from the 'dead at madison square garden was seeing people gently tumbling down the concrete stairs of the deck i was on,laughing.
- my more experienced friends said "let's get onto the floor" & i followed but quickly lost them. i figured they must've made it so i made my way past the goons then couldn't see the stage past all the tall people.
...i found my friends outside afterward. they got kicked out on their second attempt at the floor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

@Jake@10:25, believe it or not, I still think that's (mostly) a pretty good record. Except for "Russians," obviously.

coelacanth:

-not familiar. i saw lots of punk/hardcore bands in the 80s- i had to ask.
  10:44pm
JakeGould:

@Ike: I can agree with that. Growing up in deep Brooklyn there were no real easy DIY or punk shows to go to. The closest thing to “grassroots” were the metalheads who went to L'Amour around Dyker Heights. It was kind of cool to go to a local record store and see signs saying that Iron Maiden were going to be signing things at Zig Zag Records on Avenue U and it wasn’t a big deal.

My first concert without adults was probably Lollapalooza '92. Lush was great, the best band there, and first up. I wish they'd played longer. Pearl Jam was good for what it was. Jesus & Mary Chain and Ministry, I can't even remember and I wasn't even on drugs, so they must've been kind of disappointing. Ice Cube was awful.

As per last week me first unaccompanied show was the Cars and Wang Chung. Regarding Wang Chung I remember everyone getting into Dancehall Days and then talking during the "deep cuts". Then the Cars came out and considering how all over MTV and radio they were at the time I thought Ric Ocasek's deadpan persona was surreal as he was singing these massive hits...
