A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@yair yona - great idea.. what if Four Tet were to play at WFMU's boiler room.. Four Tet live from the Boiler Room!
  11:36am
Listener Robert:

"The Life & Loves of a She-Devil" is a good book, a good TV mini-series, and actually a fairly weak adaptation to the Roseanne Barr movie. The TV series "Lost" had many sly allusions to it, and those are also a clue to the hidden plot of "Lost".
  11:37am
Ike:

Late response here, but yeah that bland ubiquitous Chinese garlic is the worst. Around here you can usually find American (or at worst, Spanish or Mexican) garlic at Circus or Fairway or a few other places.
Avatar 11:39am
bobdoesthings:

@ike - ARGH! I've been complaining about Chinese garlic for almost a year.. in my hood it's almost all you can get. I make it a point to walk 15 mins away to go to the nearest organic market to get real garlic. I was reading somewhere that the influx of chinese garlic is killing america/californian garlic prices and availability.. and what's worse is there aren't standards/regulations on this chinese garlic stuff. to my knowledge..
  11:39am
Listener Robert:

"Lost" was actually about the substitution of lookalike persons, produced partly by plastic surgery, for people who were killed in an airliner crash. The plot of the Weldon book & its TV (but not movie) adapt'n serves as a clue to that of "Lost" once you catch the allusions.

I didn't hear the book rec, but a few weeks ago when I recommended the works of Anita Brookner, she countered with Jane Gardam. I have now read one of Gardam's early works, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, "The Hollow Land." I'll also recommend the short stories of Alistair MacLeod.

Some have theorized the whole country still has PTSD from the Cultural Revolution and maybe that's why some of them will do virtually anything for money including sell tainted baby food even many who aren't that poor anymore. Also the incredible levels of widespread rudeness within that country.
