@cheri: So what’s with “cheri Amber?” Is that a reference to “Cheri” the adult 1980s magazine and Amber Lynn who often appeared inside said magazines pages?

Eric the half bee:

This music is the most unlistenable godawful shit I've heard in a long time, plus the discussion seems so inwardly, "I'm so cool and know everyone of the regulars here" focused. Ah, freeform radio; allows me the luxury of switching to WBGO for reliable, generally sappy jazz, for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth:

aw,baby didn't get to suckle today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Oh, come on, tell us how you really feel bee man :)

Reliable. Sappy. Jazz. Some default, that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

i have the feeling wbgo will not complete him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I just bought an old Labradford album on vinyl.
  10:51pm
JakeGould:

I actually like WBGO and listen to it a lot in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Ike:

Maybe nobody has told him about WFUV, your station for the hottest new strollercore.

WKCR murders WBGO, except when Phil Schaap is talking about what Charlie Parker ate for breakfast that one morning in 1949, or playing opera.
Avatar 10:55pm
steve:

is it weird i know nothing of these other local stations? WBGO? ive never even heard of that before. besides Beats in Space on WNYU ive never felt the need explore the world outside WFMU land...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth:

i listened to wbgo almost daily for a few years in the 90s. i don't think its changed much, and i've had my fill.
...Phil Schaap was on bgo when i started listening to it. i actually liked all that information!
Avatar 10:57pm
steve:

ohh right its the jazz station my mom listens to!
Avatar 10:58pm
steve:

nice squiggly sounds... wonder what this guys playing? scratchin contact mic'd metal maybe?
  10:58pm
JakeGould:

WBGO is a nice alternative to WNYC’s weekend Jonathan Schwartz show. Because Michael Bourne plays pretty much the same jazz vocalists as Jonathan Schwartz on WNYC does but with one key difference; Michael Bourne doesn’t sound depressed 99% of the time. And hey, that is only MY OPINION but just saying.
  11:01pm
greyhoos:

@coelacanth: And I listen to a lot of jazz, actually. But I v much go for the non-sappy kind. Can't vouch for its "reliablity", but it always works for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth:

but,yeah- kcr was much better for me when i discovered it.
...but i'm not interested in that either. they're both so predictable, and neither one plays any "real" jazz- by the original definition of "jazz". (free jazz/out jazz)
jazz is not formulaic.
Avatar 11:02pm
steve:

cool! i like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Ike:

Schwartz is almost as smug and self-satisfied as G. Keillor. That's some weapons-grade smugness. I hope the CIA is keeping an eye on those guys because they're a dangerous natural resource. Can't let North Korea get ahold of any of that. (Has Tom Scharpling ever done a Schwartz impression?)
  11:05pm
JakeGould:

@steve: “…ive never felt the need explore the world outside WFMU land…” Good. Keep on slaving in the listener sweatshop, audioslave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Waterloo has summer jazz festival and a jazz club that is all sappy jazz. The city next door has am improvisational jazz festival, and an avant garde club. So it's always interesting explaining one festival to the other group.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

steve, i used to try to listen to vkr, but my antenna would pick up ONLY fmu or ONLY vkr, depending on the positioning. i got tired of untacking and tacking ,un-tacking,re-tacking...so i chose wfmu...even though i had 2 friends who were djs on vkr! (& one on fmu -then.)
