Listener comments!

  3:02pm JakeGould:

“…to show you how I train you at home in spare time…” I can’t get past that sentence. It’s like “it puts lotion on the skin.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm common:

indeed, jake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Michael:

Afternoon Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Jake - Maybe it needs some additional punctuation to correctly convey what he means. www.tallboybrewing.com...
Avatar 3:07pm Polyus:

That one little ad changed young Irwin's life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& if you don't give to Bob Dobbs, blowjobs could go the way of Steve Jobs...
  3:07pm Listening Out There:

Then, there was Herbie Nichols...and It Was Good...
  3:10pm berbo:

Who are these idiots at the NYT? Everyone knows that Brownstein is the former frontman for Led Zepellin.
Avatar 3:11pm Ryab:

I didn't know.
Avatar 3:13pm Ryab:

Don't worry now I know.
  3:14pm Laura L:

What if you get a Lesson Free and learn so quickly you get a Good Job in Radio right away. Mr. Smith will need lessons in how to Make Money Selling Lessons.
  3:20pm Brendan:

Amen brother. Change can sometimes suck. About to go on vacay this aft. and my friggin work 'puter that basically runs the show when Im gone wants to auto update Java and this and that. Ha! The chances of that are slim and none and slim just left town ahead of me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Ike:

I say we pass a federal law to allow Willie Nelson to smoke weed anywhere he wants. Not anybody else, just Willie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Parq:

Wow. With all those talented musical stars playing her, who knew the real Gypsy Rose Lee couldn't sing?
  3:29pm Strangeneedle:

Flings are wonderful things!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Alison Porchnik:

Sounds good!
  3:32pm Cooh John:

Yeeeeeehawwwww, Willie, Barrence, et. al. You still on the board, JakeGould?
  3:40pm JakeGould:

@Cooh: Now I am.
  3:40pm Dean:

Gypsy Rose Lee and Sun Ra. Goddamn. Just goddamn. It's like winning the lottery.
Avatar 3:41pm slugluv1313:

oh my! FLINGS! somehow in my warped twisted mind, continuing where "Wives and Lovers" left off earlier today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Parq:

That Sun Ra was brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Parq:

(Meaning that track, but that guy was brilliant too.)
  3:49pm brandon:

you got athletes foot
  3:50pm Cooh John:

JG, I just wanted to tip my chapeau to you for deciphering my moniker on Sunday.
  3:51pm Laura L:

David Garland is simply superb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Mike East:

David Garland does have a great voice. A shame he's leaving. I enjoyed catching him when I did.
  3:52pm Listening Out There:

Thx for the hat tip to David Garland. I like his show. I follow him on [shudder] Facebook...
  3:55pm JakeGould:

@CoohJohn: You're welcome! Been watching lots of "Magnum P.I." recently so getting good at trivial detective work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Webhamster Henry:

David's last Spinning on Air show airs Sunday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Irwin:

Ken and I have extended an invite for David to host SoA on WFMU. He's considering it.
  4:02pm Cooh John:

@JakeGould: my detective work consists of discovering great music and people on WFMU. Irwin included, natch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Webhamster Henry:

  4:07pm jan:

David Garland's show was a favorite for me when he first came on air. Was it after 9-11 that they moved his show to later and less frequently? It would be great to have him on WFMU. One of the great voices in his own sound- speaking voice, his music and the music that he featured. Great radio personalities continue to leave the airways. Stay with us, Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Philthy woman:

Clay! I wasn't expecting to hear him at this hr when I tuned in- an unexpected delight!
  4:21pm Clay:

Hey, thanks Irwin! Enjoying your show as always. You are the man. Would like to hear your thoughts on Trump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Ike:

That sounded good, Clay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Irwin:

Thanks, Jan. And shouts to Clay Pijon!
  4:28pm Clay:

TY Ike and Philthy woman! Pijon. Love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

While standing in the line at the grocer's, I glanced at an article about the Bushes and how they financed Nazi Germany. I thought to myself "Dave Emory discussed that at length years ago." WFMU leading the pack over tabloid newsprint.
Avatar 4:40pm laughingacademy:

When this song started, for a split second I mistook Marshall Crenshaw for John Flansburgh from They Might Be Giants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Irwin:

BTW, thanks to Alison Porchnik for the NYT correction alert.
  4:43pm CP:

Kind of Todd-like, this Marshall. The guitars sound Texan, though.
  4:45pm Laura L:

Funny, I thought Marshall Crenshaw sounded a little Sport Murphy-like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Alison Porchnik:

Oh, you know me - always looking for the next major gaffe by the NYT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm melinda:

I loved this song in the 80s but didn't hear the lyrics until now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Webhamster Henry:

More Music Hall!
  5:02pm ohg:

Loved that George Formby track
  5:07pm Seep:

This Herbie makes me miss my old Slingerlands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Alison Porchnik:

ooh, I like this non-Bollywood Indian movie music!
Avatar 5:17pm Jeff:

FYI, there's now a four-disc Noel Coward set in the digital audio library, accessible via Media Center. Also some Paolo Conte. And piles of other fun things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Irwin:

Thanks, Jeff. And for the coffee. And the fun new toys in the studio.
  5:20pm Thomas Lowery:

Imagining our family's old Kimball organ with the color-coded keys (for easy learning!) and the built-in drum machine that got stuck on the foxtrot setting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Webhamster Henry:

I was hearing that mandolin strum effect!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Ike:

I was doing dishes and the water partly drowned out Irwin's voice -- did he just say he doesn't have to list all the players on that Herbie track because "we're not WKCR"? Ha! Did I mishear that?
  5:25pm Scuttle:

Damn- you killin it Klaus.
  5:27pm Laura L:

Title of that Beyer song is "I'm a nut job."
  5:28pm Bostoner:

This sounds like Amy Mann pre- 'Til Tuesday.
  5:28pm Scuttle:

Ah! Thanks for the translation- that's why I love WFMU.
  5:30pm zetaReserve:

is Spinner a German word for crazy person? oh well it seems Bayer likes to make translated covers to the Beatles...
  5:32pm Name:

Song. Perfect title. No bullshit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Irwin:

Name: word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm chris:

Harland = badass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Mike East:

so the digital prepared piano is not digital samples from actual prepared pianos, but a program that has somewhat random algorithms to affect the sound of the performance - ie: reverse, time stretch, delay type effects
Is that correct?
  5:37pm Laura L:

Yeah, a Spinner is a weirdo, an oddball, someone who's nuts--comes from the verb spinnen--to make stuff up in your head. it's pronounced like Schpinner, not Spinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Mike East:

been trying to explain it to a friend but I'm not really sure if I get it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Irwin:

So WFMU listeners are spinners?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm chris:

the voices in mein kopf say yes, Irwin
  5:40pm Laura L:

Well, let's just say sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Irwin:

The first lesson in becoming a spinner is FREE at home in spare time.
  5:44pm 777:

i think the word is also used to blame someone for doing something (sometimes dangerous) against the current. like if you jay walk and everyone on the curb says, "spinst du (you nut job, you), all the kinder will see what a bad example you are."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Alison Porchnik:

Yeah, Irwin, but the first lesson only teaches you two baffling non sequiturs and one silly walk. If you want a second lesson (and you will) you'll get bilked. That's how they f#ck you!
  5:47pm Laura L:

Yes, that's right--"Spinnst du?!" is "Have you lost your mind?!?" And that's right, AP, after one Lesson Free, you will PAY AND PAY AGAIN!
  5:48pm zetaReserve:

you'd be NUTS not to invest your money/time in getting a degree from Spinner U :^)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Mike Sin:

Workin' outta town and your show has been keepin' me company -- Completely enjoyed it.
  5:55pm JakeGould:

You don’t have to be nuts to work here! I will sent you a lesson free to show how i train you at home in spare time for nuts jobs in radio.
  5:57pm Laura L:

Sister Pooh! Amen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Did Duane Train get things started by playing The Spinners on his show earlier today?
  5:59pm JakeGould:
