A very strange day was when a very close high school friend, who knows practically nothing about popular music, told me that in the '80s she went on one date with this musician named Lemmy. She had no idea he was anybody.
Avatar 9:34pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Gaylord, that reminds me of a story one of my professors told me. He's a television professor and doesn't follow music. As a teenager he served hot dogs to Bono and the Edge and they thought it was hilarious that he didn't know who they were. They called the other two band members over to have a look at the kid who didn't recognize them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Gaylord Fields:

But there's music on TV, Bronwyn. He's got no excuse, I say.

Thanks Mr. Fiveash. Is Lemmy OK?

@MattF: Wonder if the doctors said, “Well you have shortness of breath, but your rock levels are just fine.”
  9:39pm
P-90:

@Gaylord: I assume you ascertained that the Lemmy she went out was "the" Lemmy, not Lemmy Lipschitz from some band from Brooklyn?

In the world of video games there is Lemmy Koopa, but—call me racist—I doubt Gaylord’s friend would go out on a date with a Koopa.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm

it's short for "Ian".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

Lemmy's short for the general population but about average height for rock & roll.
  9:44pm
V Priceless:

and Roll! Still falling prey to 'and' symbol here. Ha
  9:44pm
JakeGould:

@VPriceless: “Lemmy, far be it for me—a medical doctor—to insist the rock should stop, but maybe the rock should take a breather.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Gaylord Fields:

@melinda: Story is that when his family moved from England to Wales when he was a kid, the other Welsh kids called him "Limey" and with a Welsh accent, it sounded like "Lemmy" to him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Gaylord Fields:

Another thing that instills Welsh pride, eh, Bronwyn?

@BronwynBishop: Don’t remember exactly. It was the late 1980s/early 1990s. So many sheep on the side of the road.

JakeGould:

FWIW, the first 12 (I believe) episodes of “Magnum P.I.” use a far more classic, sweeping theme than the “rocking” Mike Post theme most people associate with the show.

Also, watching the episodes in order with the help of Magnum Mania highlights something I never realized: The whole world of “Magnum P.I.” exists in the same universe of “Hawaii Five-O.” It’s not explicit, but lots of subtle references dropped in episodes. Of course Magnum is not a cop, so there is no deep overlap.

UM @10:58 that's hilarious!

Ken From Hyde Park:

We had a 1950 Ford F6 farm truck that was very similar to Sanford and Son's pickup (1951 F1). It was red, just like Fred's.

I just a British Play for Today called Season of the Witch. Julie Driscoll, Robert Powell and Paul Nicholas as well, not hippies, exactly...

It would have been even better if they had used Lou Rawls on the soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Uncle Michael:

Well, Julie Driscoll did a pretty fair version herself.

Such a great song.

I love micky dolenz!!
  11:09pm
JakeGould:

Of course the user who likes smelt likes the song about seal mammals.
Avatar 11:10pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Micky is truly an unsung hero of rock/pop vocals.

The only way this song would be better would be if it was about sea lions!
Avatar 11:10pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Well that was abrupt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm changing my ringtone to Sanford & Son as we speak.
  11:11pm
JakeGould:

@BronwynBishop: “The only way this song would be better would be if it was about sea lions!” So you thing porpoises are bougie?

Is it bad when I can tell which season of All in the Family when you can understand "Gee our old LaSalle ran great"?

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

We need to get rid of The Monkess - let's literally have them jump off a bridge! - so warped - so great...

@Jake: Yes.
  11:14pm
JakeGould:

@BronwynBishop: I am speechless at your fat sea mammal prejudices.
  11:14pm
JakeGould:

@Folsom: No. That is not bad. Let the Norman Lear force flow through you, you big dummy.

Wow, Sanford & Son is a great ringtone.

@Jake My favorite line in All in the Family "Sticks and stones may break my bones, and you are one dumb polack."
  11:21pm
JakeGould:

@Folsom: The force is strong in you.

I'm going to listen to the last part of the show in the dark...great stuff Matt. Thanks. Night all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Since we are talking about old TV shows, we should mention The Carol Burnett Show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
melinda:

I watched Carol Burnett a lot but the theme music wasn't great, as I recall.

Every song is gold! Thanx, matt.

hope i'll see you again tomorrow, jake!
  11:32pm
JakeGould:

@cheri: Hope is nothing but a sandwich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The closing theme from Carol Burnett was more memorable than the opening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Gaylord Fields:

Three of my favorite '60s theme songs have unusual time signatures: "Ben Casey" and "Mission: Impossible," both in 5/4, and "Room 222," which is in 7/4.
Avatar 11:33pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

This song is so great
  11:34pm
JakeGould:

@Gaylord: “Mission: Impossible” is so great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Gaylord Fields:

What makes "Hanky Panky" so great is the Tommy James' made-up lyrics make zero sense, and bear no relation to the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Gaylord Fields:

First he's calling her "his baby" and then he's talking about them just meeting, and then he claims he never saw her. Backpedal much, Tommy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
coelacanth:

Tommy Roe next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Matt F:

Gaylord- I learned that the hard way!
  11:37pm
JakeGould:

On the success of “Hanky Panky” Tommy James claims, “One night I was playing for 20 drunks in a bar in Michigan, and the next night I'm playing for 10,000 screaming fans in Pittsburgh.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

By the way, did anyone remember to feed Dave's chimps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Matt F: "Hanky Panky" is like the ending of Monster A Go-Go: "But there was no monster..."
  11:39pm
JakeGould:

@Gaylord Fields: That completely throws the whole concept of a singer singing a song in a fair point of view that takes all parties feelings/emotions into consideration out the window.
  11:39pm
cheri:

btw Gaylord, jake the next time I see you two i'll write a list of my favorite tv shows. ok?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Matt F:

coelacanth- we got the Tommy Roe out of the way at the beginning of the show.
  11:40pm
JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: I got them some some Vitamin Water and kettle chips. Monkeys like that right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: The feeding instructions said Kettle CORN, man — kettle CORN! Now there's gonna be a bloodbath.
Avatar 11:43pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
coelacanth:

ah, i see...and i see that Damnit i missed Big Maybelle!!
  11:43pm
JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: Damn me. I’ll see of I can return this dreck and get the kettle corn in time. Maybe a few bags of Utz pretzels will keep them happy? And a few Table Talk pies? I mean it’s late and I have to be realistic about food purchase options.
Avatar 11:45pm

I'm so used to the Ramones version, this is the first time I've heard the original!
  11:46pm

Gaylord, what's the matter? you hav'nt said one word to me tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: There's a tin of Beluga caviar behind the glass that says "Break in case of chimp emergency" — this qualifies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Gaylord Fields:

@cheri: It's not my radio show.
  11:47pm
JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: Blessed be Dave for thinking of poor schmucks like me in times of crisis like this!
  11:48pm
JakeGould:

@cheri: Do you dream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Gaylord Fields:

The caviar is for the chimps!
  11:49pm
cheri:

yes I do, jake
  11:49pm
JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: Yeah… Yeah… I get it. Chimps get the caviar. And this Ming vase over here, what’s that for? It’s the one right next to this 4 tiered fancy cake that took hours to make? What’s that for?
