I'm not especially gory, no. The head of the dead ram was brilliantly invoked by Cecile in a classic comments section ("Troll Acres, a planned community") a few years ago.

Well, if that’s the case why is it when I said, “Biologically we know you cannot be pregnant but that’s not the point.” you didn’t flinch. That’s a pretty pompous statement for someone to just casually toss out there; an insult in fact if it were not true.

@Ike: Another subject… Ever go into any decent coffeeshop/bakeries around Sunset Park? They all seem to come and go but are decent for a roll and warm beverage every now and then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Ike:

@Jake, you mean non-Chinese and non-Mex coffeeshops/bakeries? I haven't noticed many besides Green Fig. BTW I noticed your favorite Viet place, at 63rd & 8th, reopened as a branch of Manhattan's Bo Ky, presumably under new management.
  10:50pm
listening out there:

Correction time...Dokaka is one person. From Wikipedia: Dokaka is a Japanese beatboxer who performs music solely by multitracking his own voice, generally with one instrument per track. (That is, he records himself mimicking the bass part to a song, then records himself mimicking the drum part in sync with the first recording, and so on.)
  10:50pm
cheri:

well I have to check out now, see you all (even ike) soon, goodnight dave!
  10:50pm
JakeGould:

@Ike: Nah, I mean the Chinese ones where you can get a hot dog cut in four, wrapped in sweet dough with scallions on it for $1 or so. And cool tip on the Vietnamese place at 63rd and 8th. The old place was… Meh… So maybe the new owners can make it less “Meh…”

Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, Dave and listeners. I'm curious about something: Is bubble tea a popular new thing in New York City? There's a new frozen yogurt place that opened here and they sell it there. Also, what's great/special about bubble tea? I haven't tried the stuff yet.
Avatar 11:08pm
Dave Mandl:

@maestroso: Indeed.
  11:09pm
JakeGould:

@kenFromHydePark: Bubble tea is still a thing, but not as big as it once was when it first came around like in the mid-2000s. People still like it though. It’s basically just some flavored tea drink—but recipes and flavors can vary—and the “bubbles” are just brown chewy tapioca balls. I personally can live without bubble tea of it disappeared tomorrow. But it is worth trying at least once. Now Thai Iced Tea… I will love that forever!
Avatar 11:10pm
Dave Mandl:

@Ken: I don't know that it's such a new thing. Maybe the last 5-ish years in NYC?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Ike:

@KFHP, the profit margins are potentially huge, so tons of places add it to the to-go menu. Usually it's not that good. One or two places make really good iced green tea. The bubbles are superfluous IMO. Usually they're tasteless tapioca. I always ask for no bubbles.
  11:12pm
JakeGould:

@Ike: “…the profit margins are potentially huge…” Sugar water is a lucrative business.

Philthy woman:

so fucking good to hear Dave,
  11:19pm
?:

Yes, Dave -- 1928 makes sense. I gather there was a big gamelan craze in the early 20th century. Lots of U.S. university music departments buying up the full array of gamelan instruments. (Found this out the hard way years ago when I went to go see a free gamelan concert at the University of Chicago. Turned out to be a bunch of community non-Asians making use of the Uni's trove of vintage kettle drums & whatnot.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the tea info. I can make a variety of tea products in my own home for less money and toss some Skittles into it just for fun.

@KenFromHydePark: Yeah, but without the big straws and the teen/tween gal behind the counter taking your order while browsing their smartphone, you’ll be missing out on the real Bubble Tea experience.
  11:25pm
greyhoos:

T'was me, forgetting to enter my moniker. I assume the academic fad had something to do with Debussy and other early modernists who were tripping balls on the gamelan "all-night" open form.

you know dave I've been thinking real hard, and you're right I DO repeat myself at times, but I'll be working on that in the near future, but at least i'm polite and cause no trouble, as you can say i'm a FUN loving commenter
  11:35pm

And I suppose "tripping balls" isn't the most appropriate term in this context. But after all this talk about bubble tea...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
pacific standard simon:

'Tripping bells', I think you meant.
  11:37pm
JakeGould:

@greyhoos: To be fair, the older I get the more I realize that some artists/creators were high as a kite when they created their work. I mean some might have studied their craft straight and clean, but then one day they “tripped balls” and just connected things in fun new ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

One word: absinthe.

Why a duck?
  11:45pm
greyhoos:

Yes, if you're talking late 19th century France, chances are absinthe had something to do with it.
  11:49pm
greyhoos:

@Jake: Never had it, myself, only read about it & the holy-shitness of its effects. But I remember back in the '90s when some Czech distillery started brewing the stuff after it'd been banned for over a century. Banned because too many alcohol-poisoning deaths were associated with the stuff. Might've been because an ingredient in its earlier form was wormwood...which is effectively a toxin. Or so I heard.

Way cool tune, Dave.

@Philthy: No, it's no problem at all here. I was just joking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
pacific standard simon:

@Philthy woman - Just try making some fart jokes here and see how fast the hammer comes down. ;)
  11:54pm
JakeGould:

@greyhoos: Pretty sure what I drank was not wormwood. Don’t believe it is legal to make it with wormwood anymore. But if it happened in Eastern Europe, I can believe they would much with wormwood or some other strong/toxic alcohol. Every few years there’s some rash of alcohol related deaths in Eastern Europe due to toxic alcohol being mixed in a drink.
Avatar 11:56pm
Dave Mandl:

@pss: No, it's all good. As long as you don't insult/offend anyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm

If it's not made with wormwood, I'm not sure how it can be called absinthe, rather than Ouzo or Pernod or some other anise based liquor.
