Good afternoon, Amanda.

"Everything guaranteed not to woik!" -- where is this NYC now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
listener james from westwood:

This reminds me, I need crew socks!
Avatar 12:02pm
ndbob:

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Amanda:

Good afternoon all of you! I hope you enjoy my NYC tribyoot.
Avatar 12:06pm
Okasa:

I am way on board with any Hoagy Carmichael tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
listener james from westwood:

Appreciate the "Homer vs. the City of New York shot below."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
World-Weary Poseur:

Howdy!
  12:14pm
MONEYBAG$:

Apple just pushed their press conference back to 1:45 so they won't go up against Simpsons Time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
listener james from westwood:

They were right to do it.
  12:17pm
MONEYBAG$:

omg this song was pushed way, way, WAY to the back of my mental sock drawer
  12:18pm
MONEYBAG$:

I will try to use the word "pushed" in all future posts as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Amanda! Fellow native Manhattanite reporting!
Avatar 12:22pm
Okasa:

It is very curious that March of the Hoodlums is included on a compilation of New York Jazz. Carmichael's Collegians were a group of Hoagy and his friends from Indiana U, recorded in Richmond, IN, and is representative of sock time, (collegiate midwest Jazz). Oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
listener james from westwood:

Holy crow, how many Young People's Day Camp ads did I see as a yout'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Gary:

Anyone read Marc Spitz's Poseur, btw? Sell me on it! (It's sitting on my shelf, expectantly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
listener james from westwood:

A year or three ago a Stop & Shop up the road from me had a table near the entrance of 9/11 stuff, much as one would with other seasonal decorations, party paper goods, etc. Mostly recycled July 4th shit, with new red/white/blue baked goods. I'm amazingly tough to offend but it was jaw dropping.
Avatar 12:33pm
steve:

i'll take a crab juice...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Gary: I haven't read it, but I should, as I was working with Marc Spitz during that very era he writes about. He really was "trying too hard" during that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
Gaylord Fields:

He's always been an honest-to-a-fault writer, so I would trust his perspective of those times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
listener james from westwood:

@Steve: No crab juice, just Mountain Dew.
Avatar 12:41pm
ndbob:

@Okasa but living in Bloomington any music from IU is fine with me - even if it doesn't quite fit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

A couple seasons ago, the Simpsons visited New York again and the Khlav Kalesh guy had a big, shiny store instead of just a food cart.
Avatar 12:43pm
steve:

oh, khlav khalash vendor. apparently he returned in a relatively recent episode.
Avatar 12:43pm
steve:

ah beat me to it Ken
Avatar 12:43pm
Okasa:

@ndbob - As a fellow midwesterner, I agree! We need to stick together through this NY-centric show. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Gary:

Thanks, Gaylord -- you've sold me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Amanda:

Midwesterners are most welcome here, always! And @Okasa, I appreciate the comment about Carmichael :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Uncle Michael:

Who knew Mort sounded so much like Roy Phillips?!
Avatar 12:47pm
ndbob:

@Okasa Indeed! Kind of a transplanted Midwesterner - five years in North Dakota and a couple here in Bloomington

Okasa:

My musical knowledge is pretty much limited to 20's white jazz. So Hoagy is right in my wheelhouse. (Bix lives!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Amanda:

Ah cool, I dig Bix too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm kind of a Hoosier Hotshots guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Five years from now, we'll be in the 20s again. Yikes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Well, I guess unless ISIS or North Korea take over and we switch to a different calendar.
Avatar 12:54pm
Okasa:

Yep… we'll be able to start listening to songs recorded 100 years ago. (Guess we could now, but recordings from 1915 are still pretty crude).
Avatar 12:54pm
northguineahills:

I used to have this LL Cool J album on cassette. Ah junior high....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Uncle Michael:

I dig those crude recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Mike East:

Is this song made up? It sounds made up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Amanda:

You mean "Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird"? It is a nursery rhyme/lullaby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
doctorjazz:

Great show! Love the originals of known covers, especially when they are better than the cover (though Santana's ain't chicken feed).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Amanda:

Hey thanks @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Mike East:

@Amanda - was quoting Anthony Michael Hall in "Vacation" :) fun NY show today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Amanda:

Oh, duh. Was just about to add to my comment apologizing for not perceiving the snark at first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Mike East:

...and yes, in reference to Mockingbird...parents singing in the front seat, Rusty thinks they are making it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Amanda:

Ahhhhhh now everyone will know I'm a Vacatia-dummy!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Mike East:

I dunno - that quote might be one of the more obscure ones...there's almost as many as Caddyshack in that one. That line always stuck with me for some reason.
Avatar 1:23pm
northguineahills:

Does he have a very little car?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
listener james from westwood:

By deleting this episode from the syndication lineup, networks also deleted the first appearance of Duffman! Oh, no!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
listener james from westwood:

The sepia-toned flashback of Homer's ill-fated coat-buying expedition is also beautiful, incl. Homer's fleeing the irked pimp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
listener james from westwood:

I still say, "I got something you can bite on!" a la the one jerk, in my long-dormant Bronx accent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

That's it! I'm getting out of this town if it kills me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
listener james from westwood:

"Hey! That's just my aspirin!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm

"Duffman never dies—only the censors that prevent his episode from being shown! Oh, yeah!" chk-a-chk-KA

There's another chunk of childhood audio right there. It was YEARS before I heard anything but the start and end outside that ad's context.
