This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Long time between dreams. Glad to be a part of this one.
Avatar 6:57pm Flash Strap:

Me too WD. Great to see you here
Avatar 6:58pm ndbob:

evening Evan WD et al
Avatar 6:59pm Walking Daydream:

I did really enjoy last week's show. Listened to it five times at least. Especially the Dvorak.
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

evenin' bob!
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

oh wow thanks for saying so. That Dvorak is exceptional
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Evan and all!! All set for the next BB revue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Carmichael:

More Beach Boys! Mwaaahhh hah ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm melinda:

hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Carmichael:

Oh good, I love Vegetables.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Carmichael:

Music is drowning you out, Flash.
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

aw geez did the music wipe me off the face of sound?
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Hi hi James and Melinda and Carmichael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Flash Strap, my hero! (Although some people in Pittsburgh call you my hoagie.)
Avatar 7:13pm hyde:

back to the beach!
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

Doug my Huggie! Hyde, you hound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Shoot, I'm late!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Carmichael:

My Po Boy!
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

This track is so key to me: "let's see what you've done to the church of the American Indian.... wahana lu lei"

it pops all the themes, makes them hurt
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

That's little Van Dyke down there, by the way. He looks like he's at his Bar Mitzvah with a young plump Billy Jack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

Did I miss you talk about what that photo is on the bottom?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

Oh! I guess I didn't :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Carmichael:

I have some slippers exactly like those on Brian. Unnecessary, by the way, for 362 days of the year here in California.
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

Beat you to the punch Gary! Super pleased to see you by the way! Great show last night, listened to it today
Avatar 7:20pm northguineahills:

Moar Beach Boys!
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Carmichael:

Mopar Beach Boys.
Avatar 7:23pm Mayuko:

Good evening Evan, and everyone!
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

I have the same slippers as well Carm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Gary:

Apologies if you covered this in the intro, but did you bite the bullet and buy the box set? (I didn't even know there existed one, but just looked at it on Amazon)
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

Hello Mayuko!
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

well.... I didn't BUY it, alas. I do HAVE it, and it's essential. Depending on how devoted you are to outtakes and studio patter. The 2 disc version could do, as it's reconstructed Smile is THE one, I think
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

*its
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

anyone else got it?
Avatar 7:31pm hyde:

nope. i have my dusty old 12" of Smiley Smile but not the smile sessions box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm listener james from westwood:

It was on FMU, years ago, when I first heard the rough cuts and takes and instrumental bits that made up some of the Beach Boys' later songs. It's not that I didn't know how much layering and how many takes went into producing their music, but I'd never heard the process in such detail. Amazing and exacting craft.
Avatar 7:32pm ndbob:

I've heard it but don't have it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Gary:

I had the Brian Wilson Presents version (if that's what it was called), but Holy God it gave no indication of how awesome this is so far.
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

One of the best things is hearing how brilliant and not crazy Brian sounds. There's also just so many ideas going on, it's almost unbearable. It's a universe splitting in half for an overabundance of life
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

I really don't like the Brian Wilson Presents, though I want to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Santos L Halper:

Ooohh, just tuned in. I've got the SMiLE box (thanks Mom!) and it's pretty great. Kind of hypnotic, all the tons of outtakes and bits and pieces
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm listener james from westwood:

Whoa! Did not know that about the Marty Robbins influence, but will listen for it next time I hear Robbins!
Avatar 7:40pm hyde:

huh, i never heard that marty robbins thing. that sort of makes sense.
Avatar 7:48pm ndbob:

still one of my favorite Beach Boys songs!
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

Mine too, Bob. I love the way he shreds his vocals, and this totally Zombies keyboard break
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

I love this one too. The sound of a total genius slacking off. Shoulda been a huge hit
Avatar 7:52pm ndbob:

yep _ I played the LP endlessly
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

one of the best of the period
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

oh yes. what a song
Avatar 7:58pm hyde:

this one's my favorite song on this record. it's so odd.
Avatar 7:58pm ndbob:

great one here too yep Hyde - very strange lyrics
Avatar 7:59pm ndbob:

excellent show Evan - will have to catch the rest on the archive
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

See ya Hyde! But I'm just gettin' started!
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

"I talked your folks out of making you cut off your hair"
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Dennis' emergence as the 2nd best songwriter of the Boys. Forever waits in the wings
Avatar 8:02pm Andrew S:

enjoying this show a lot
Avatar 8:02pm hyde:

no, i'm still here! later, ndb!
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Sorry Hyde! I of course meant to say farewell to NDB. egg's on my face, wihskers are on yours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Uncle Michael:

g'd'evenin'
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

aloha Unca Mikey
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

this is one of the better instrumentals in the ouvre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Uncle Michael:

All hell's fixin' to break loose here, weather-wise.
Avatar 8:19pm hyde:

@UM yikes! good luck.
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Well don't send it my way, man! Whattaya got? Twisters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Uncle Michael:

As long as it's not damaging, it's cool. I find thunder to be a mind-altering substance. I don't think this is tornadic.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

Yeah, that's doable. The tornadoes are awful but a good thunderstorm is just fine
Avatar 8:22pm hyde:

20/20 isn't bad overall, but i sure find that "cotton fields" cover to open side 2 tough to take
Avatar 8:22pm hyde:

hope you're not about to play it, heh
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

I am not. I agree with you, that one is such a hot stinker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Uncle Michael:

I like the Highwaymen version of Cotton Fields. It's in my show queue.
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

DEEP & WIDE
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

haven't heard that version, look forward to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Uncle Michael:

I hope you don't mind that I played "Forever" with a shout to you.
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

How could I mind? Forever could never be played enough times!
Avatar 8:28pm hyde:

yeah, i never get sick of hearing forever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Uncle Michael:

It fit in well in a rather wistful, bittersweet, melancholic set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gary:

Great, now I'm obligated to YouTube "Beach Boys" + "Cotton Fields" after the show
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

This is the song that snapped Mike Love's twig-like mind. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

specifically this lyric:
Over and over
The crow cries, uncover the cornfield
Over and over
The thresher and hover the wheat field
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Santos L Halper:

"snapped Mike Love's twig-like mind". Priceless! : D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Uncle Michael:

Gary, stick with the Highwaymen's "folk scare" era version:

www.youtube.com...
Avatar 8:32pm hyde:

and then they close the record with this one, which is flat out amazing! side 2 of 20/20 is so weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Uncle Michael:

Mike had depth.

24.media.tumblr.com...
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

Mike has always looked like an embedded FBI agent, sent to infiltrate the surf scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Gary:

But I need to hear the "stinker" version
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

I admire your intrepid attitude Gary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Uncle Michael:

He looks like Viv Stanshall with Sexy Sady.
Avatar 8:36pm hyde:

now we've built it up so much, it won't sound so bad. no wait, it still will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Uncle Michael:

ahhh
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

"'Forever' has to be the most harmonically beautiful thing I've ever heard"
-Brian Wilson
Avatar 8:38pm hyde:

i really love the drum sound on "forever", too
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

oh yeah, such a juicy echo
Avatar 8:40pm glenn:

flashers to the left of me, strappers to the right.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

Stuck in the puddle with Glenn
Avatar 8:45pm coelacanth:

olá Evan and Explorers.

you have a secret mission. so secret it's a secret to you.
Avatar 8:48pm northguineahills:

Gotta run, flash, thanks for the b boys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Uncle Michael:

I have an old grange hall in my neighborhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Uncle Michael:

Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson knew what VDP knew.
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

Absolutely, UM. God do I love Nilsson.

Adios NGH!

Hola C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

I checked and I've played Harry 27 times in 117 shows...far outstripping any other artist.
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

well, he does pretty much outstrip every other artist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Uncle Michael:

agreed
Avatar 9:03pm coelacanth:

who's lead voc here?
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

I think I actually first got really into the Beach Boys after I had sort of burned down Nilsson thru overlistening. They were the only thing that seemed to fill the void
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

I actually don't know, C. My guess would be Carl?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Uncle Michael:

I would be sad if I ever grew weary of Harry.
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

It was more that I wanted to make sure I never would. It was 24/7 for a while. Of course, now I have that problem with the Boys, more often than not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Uncle Michael:

I had to back off of Scott Walker for that reason.
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

thios one was cowritten with Darryl Dragon
Avatar 9:09pm coelacanth:

(i {particularly} liked that vocal on "loop de loop")

...i always can enjoy Harry; but then i think i know less than 1/2 his output.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm melinda:

That would be sad thing, UM. I've stopped listening to some music for quite a long time to avoid that happening, but then having to stop is sad in itself.
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

You and I have similar issues, UM. Scott Walker forever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm listener james from westwood:

Must hit the hay; thanks for the mighty wave of Beach Boys!
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

This is a HELL of a song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

Night James
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

night night James! thanks for listening
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

This is the best song that never made it to Surf's Up
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

4th of July, that is
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

Carl played every instrument on this track, laid down all the vocals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Uncle Michael:

Melinda, I reached that common Beatles saturation point that so many of us do. It;s kind of nice to now be back to being able to hear how certain of their stuff is so good that it truly transcends that familiarity. It's almost like new music again in those moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm melinda:

Fourth of July was very nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Uncle Michael:

The storm is arriving. A severe t-storm warning has been issued.
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

oh boy be safe, Uncle. don't lean on any tall trees
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm melinda:

UM that's great that you can hear the Beatles in fresh way once again, even if it's just some moments. I tend to rotate my favorite music on a seasonal basis over the last several years to avoid burnout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Uncle Michael:

will don't!
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

daredevil
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

I'm leaning on a pile of pillows and watching the lightning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm melinda:

Storms can be fun.
Avatar 9:21pm coelacanth:

UM, i completely relate to that about the beatles....i can even enjoy "hey jude" once-in-a-while again! (though i'd rather hear Wilson Pickett's version)
...AT LEAST once/year now i have an all-beatles-partial-day; usually between 3 & 6 hours of beatles. but i didn't listen to them for many years.
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

this is the song for that moment, good lord.

I just heard, I think it's coming my way tonight as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Uncle Michael:

This is lovely. I listened to the BB albums you're featuring tonight precisely never.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm melinda:

These are all new to me too. The last few songs I especially like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Uncle Michael:

We might have sirens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Doug Schulkind:

I just got an email that may lead to two more fantabulous shows on the Drummer Stream. I can barely contain myself. That is all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

One email, two shows? You tease.
Avatar 9:35pm coelacanth:

'figures mike love would say that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Doug Schulkind:

It was a joint email from two people. I need a joint to calm down.
Avatar 9:36pm coelacanth:

Haha!

...good news though!
Avatar 9:38pm hyde:

the stream runneth over
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

This IS the best Beach Boys song. I mean, it has to be
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

Jazzed to hear about the new shows! Doug, you're building an empire!
Avatar 9:42pm Mayuko:

Doug, I was excited to see that Sam Segal was already shown our program schedule!! So we'll have 4 humans this coming Monday, right?
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

I'm closing out the evening with a little more Smile, mainly the Elements Suite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Doug Schulkind:

@Mayuko
Sam is now on the schedule, but he will debut on September 21!
Avatar 9:48pm Flash Strap:

That's Paul Mccartney chewing celery percussively
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

I like this version of Vegetable so much more than the one on Smiley Smile, which I do also like pretty fine
Avatar 9:51pm Mayuko:

@Doug oh, his playlist said "Upcoming events: Monday, September 14th, 9pm - Midnight". Maybe he needs to fix that? I will still mention that he'll start on 21st anyway!
Avatar 9:53pm Mayuko:

I just bought some celeries this evening, now I wanna practice eating em percussively too.
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

oh me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Uncle Michael:

I have some bok choy...hardly the same...
Avatar 9:56pm Flash Strap:

Once again, this version is so interestingly different from the Smiley version. More bounce!

The Elements Suite, such as it is, is Vega-tables (earth), Wind Chimes (air), Fire (Mrs. O'Leary's Cow) (fire of course), and Love to Say Dada (water)
Avatar 9:57pm hyde:

yeah, these are a lot cooler
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

Fire (Mrs. O'Leary's Cow) is of course the track where Brian had a fire going in the studio, had everyone wearing firemen's helmets, etc. and eventually came to feel it had psychokinetic properties when a nearby fire broke out. he may or may not have tried to destroy the tapes in fear
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

"Yeah, I’m going to call this 'Mrs. O’Leary’s Fire' and I think it might just scare a whole lot of people."
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

hahaha so many repeating motifs! it really is a kooky symphony
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Uncle Michael:

The heavens have opened up here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Uncle Michael:

A cell is passing through that's been dropping 3" per hour.
Avatar 10:04pm Flash Strap:

Seriously! Such track placement. That's the way he had it ordered, more or less
Avatar 10:04pm Flash Strap:

oh hee, UM, I thought you meant sonically.
Avatar 10:05pm Flash Strap:

I'm glad its clearin up for you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Charlie:

I thought the same thing, Evan.
Avatar 10:05pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for sayin that Charlie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Charlie:

Sorry to have missed so much, just dropping in for the end!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Uncle Michael:

I mean that cell is just getting here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm melinda:

I can see how this music might go well with a storm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm melinda:

Those outtakes were great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the great show, Evan.
Avatar 10:14pm hyde:

thanks flash, great stuff.
