This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

evening Evan and everyone!
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Evening Explorer Gary! And to you, Explorer Bob!
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hope we all brought our psychonaut suits and stuff
Avatar 7:06pm coelacanth:

olá Flash and Explorers
Avatar 7:06pm hyde:

yay, Can!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm listener james from westwood:

Good evening, folks! Hoping this is the start of a Can survey!
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Explorers Hyde and Coelacanth! Oh and Explorer James from Westwood! Hello!
Avatar 7:09pm coelacanth:

ha- i might as well star this episode now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Carmichael:

Heya Flash and fans. Love Damo's singing pose in the pic!
Avatar 7:15pm Mayuko:

yay, I've been totally in the mood for CAN today! And actually was listening like 30 min ago. Now I can leave the music selection in your dependable hand and happily focus on work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm melinda:

Howdy! Looking forward to learning about CAN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm listener james from westwood:

As with many bands, I never would've heard Can had it not been for WFMU.
Avatar 7:19pm hyde:

I actually had a Can revelation the othe day. I was listening to some Manfred Schoof I found on Darker Shade of Blue, and when I looked at the personnel I thought the drummer's name looked familiar. Googled it and et voila--it was Can's original drummer. I never knew Jaki Liebezeit was a free jazz guy first.
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

Carmichael, Mayuko, Melinda! Splendid to have you
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

I need to hear that, Hyde! I knew he was a free jazz confederate but I haven't heard anything predating Can
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

I really think he's THE drummer of our solar system
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

I'm so happy to take the reins from here, Mayuko!
Avatar 7:25pm hyde:

he plays on two that I found--The Early Quintet and Voices. I'll zip em up and wing them your way over the weekend. If I forget just remind me.
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

I love it too, Carmichael. He's such a zero-gravity guy in every way, of course he doesn't stance up like every other singer
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

awesome, AWESOME, Hyde
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

This is one of the most insane rhythms of all time. PUMMELING, but soothing in its infinite nature. like the relentless progression of a glacier across the continental plate
  7:28pm Eric:

that was the single version?
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

Oh no, Eric. I always do Halleluhwah ALL THE WAY
  7:29pm Eric:

oh I thought it was over, haha
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

it was a fake-out!
Avatar 7:31pm ndbob:

a good one Evan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm melinda:

Pummeling yet soothing...I agree.
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

This is where Damo just takes off and leaves the galaxy where all other singers live
Avatar 7:37pm Mayuko:

It just occurred to me that I never knew why Damo named himself Damo, so I googled it now. This cartoon character from the 60's was the origin! www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp... His name is Dameo which means "I can never do anything right". But Damo never doing things "right" made him the best!
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

Wow. That's actually amazing. What a man, what an artist. I really think that his existence itself is meaningfully revolutionary

I have an acquaintance who stayed with him for some time, apparently he's like endlessly kind
Avatar 7:40pm coelacanth:

Ha! Thanks Mayuko. i just thought it was a japanese name!
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

me too, I never even questioned it
Avatar 7:42pm ape_status:

the ape is signed on... very excited to be listening this week!
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

Hello Explorer Ape of the EG Robinson visage, very happy to have you
Avatar 7:46pm hyde:

haha, that is awesome. i wonder if he got Dameo from the tv show? was it on german tv in the 60's?
Avatar 7:48pm coelacanth:

i think he was still in japan when the cartoon was on.
Avatar 7:50pm hyde:

heh, yeah i just realized how dumb that was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Here I am in Target. You're currently on Bluetooth on a Sony X33 speaker.
Avatar 7:53pm coelacanth:

Ken, turn it up!!
Avatar 7:55pm coelacanth:

hyde, he did travel a bit before settling in germany, so-not so dumb!
Avatar 7:55pm Mayuko:

yah, hyde, he was still in Japan then. It also says in this Japanese wikipedia page that he used to be known as "the youngest homeless/bohemian in Tokyo" when he was 14 back in the 60's... and he organized unofficial The Kinks fan club then. There's so many pretty funny episodes I never knew!
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

That's amazing to imagine, Ken. I agree, pump up the Cans!
Avatar 7:57pm Mayuko:

and that's actually not dumb at all, cos he dropped out high school and head out abroad already in the late 60's. that's what it says here anyway.
Avatar 7:59pm ndbob:

excellent show Evan! catch the rest on hte archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

That was fun for a bit, but I must go over to the towel department now.
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

I had never heard that about the Kinks fan club!
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

haha, still pretty dumb. that's ok. "I can never do anything right!" ;)

i was mostly already starting to think about whether Germany got japanese tv shows in the 60's like we did in the US. i was a big Kimba the White Lion fan!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

I still need to see that. Tomita did the music!
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

You can really hear "Spoon"'s DNA in this one
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

Irmin is really presiding on the keys
Avatar 8:06pm hyde:

wow. i'm not at all sure we got the Tomita music on the American version of Kimba. but i haven't seen it in......let's just say it has been some time.
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

it's pre-synth Tomita, I know, so it probably just sounds like movie music. I imagine it's really good, but I have no idea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yes we can CAN, @ the very least...
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Welcome to the revolution, brother Revolution Rabbit
Avatar 8:11pm Mayuko:

the Kimba (we call him Leo!) series I watched was not with Isao Tomita music, boo. I arrived too late. But I don't remember anything about the music anyway, haha.
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

btw, Mayuko, if any of the Japanese from Damo's otherworldly patois is ever worth pointing out (or even intelligible), I enthusiastically want to know what you know
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

I think he sings through a long hose with the mic at the other end on this one
Avatar 8:15pm northguineahills:

I got here for Future Days, my favorite!
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

Mine too, NGH! Happy to have you and of course, much more to come!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Gary:

I do like some of Rite Time quite a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You have to practice a lot to improvise. What is composing but an improvisation you put down?
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

I do too, Gary, although it's certainly my least favorite, including Out of Reach but excluding Sacrilege or whatever it's called
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

Exactly RRN63. You get it.
Avatar 8:34pm Mayuko:

You mean what he says when he sometimes sings in Japanese? I can never really understand cos it's very vague and abstract (and so I guess I never even tried.) I can tell that Shikaku = square, maru = circle, ten = dot, and the track "Aumgn" from Tago Mago is a buddhist term 阿吽 which means "the beginning and the end of the universe". And in "Oh Yeah" I think it sounds like he's singing about some crazy guy who sits there by himself and then piss from on top of the rainbow, etc, it just never makes any clear sense to me. (Sorry if i got your question wrong!)
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

No you got it right! I know most of what he sings is unintelligible in any language, but what you just translated is actually really interesting. Thanks for sharing your prowess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Hip hooray for Explorers Womb!
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

I'm not sure if this track was made more in the spirit of the Future Days sessions, or Soon Over Babaluma, but it's definitely one of them
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

Welcome to the delivery room, Explorer Doug!
Avatar 8:40pm Mayuko:

I haven't heard Doko-E yet myself, but people say he sings something pretty comprehensible (for him anyway) about Tokyo being polluted in the Japanese part also.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

Oh I guess we do know: it is definitely Babaluma. Listen to Karoli's violin!
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

Here, I'll play it, Mayuko
Avatar 8:48pm Mayuko:

oh boo!!I just went to the kitchen to fetch some food at the worst timing!!! :((
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

This is the first album after Damo leaves, with Karoli and Schmidt taking over vocals. I think it's really really great, actually. A lot of people talk it down as second-tier, but I think it's just the best possible next step from Future Days. So exoooooootic
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

@Mayuko: whoopsy
Avatar 8:50pm Mayuko:

boo was to myself. I'll go back to your archive later so that I can finally listen to it. thanks for playing!
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

That was my first "request" ever on Explorers Room! That I met, at least.
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

Sorry to Babaluma/"Chain Reaction" lovers: I started that last track towards the end, mainly to get that insane transition into "Quantum Physics"
Avatar 9:00pm Mayuko:

then that's even more bummer that I missed that special moment of the first request! Besides I think that was also my first ever request I asked a DJ on radio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm George of Troy:

Great show... thanks!
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

haha, well, like the first time for everything in life, it was slightly botched but totally worth it
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

Thank you, Explorer George!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...keep going - no problem !...
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

There's much more to come, RRN63, don't sweat it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm listener james from westwood:

I am adding "slightly botched but totally worth it" to my OKCupid profile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Can I make a request? Please don't stop Exploring!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Alex In Illinois:

I am glad to get this sonic tour of Can's work. I have heard a track from them here and there on college radio stations, and from friends' collections. It's nice to get a guided tour.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

You got it, Douglass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Doug Schulkind:

I mean, like, ever.
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

Oh man, Alex, glad to hear it! I almost felt like this was a redundant exercise, like everyone would have heard it all, so I'm glad some people are getting the first-time safari experience
Avatar 9:16pm Mayuko:

I once had an instense dream with Hunters and Collectors endlessly repeated all night... made me pretty exhausted when I woke up. One of my fav songs of theirs nevertheless!
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

Oh I could never stop!
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

Mine too. I love all the cartoon sound effects, and the fuckin INSANE lyrics "30 leather kids, on the gangbang train"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm melinda:

I've probably heard Can here or there, the name is familiar, but really this is all new to me.
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

That makes me so happy, Melinda
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

Liebezeit is like, BEYOND beyond with this percussion here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm melinda:

I thought I was the only one here not familiar with Can! Maybe I am.
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

I mean, DAMN, give the drummer some!
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

You certainly have company in Alex, Melinda! And hopefully many other silent listeners as well are being introduced, but who knows
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

Some of Karoli's best, meatiest guitar work, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Doug Schulkind:

A drum solo is like my bat signal in the Gotham City sky.
Avatar 9:28pm hyde:

the drums on this are fantastic. (i'm not totally sure i love the drum mix, though.)
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

The city needs you Doug! There are drums solos out there that need to be heard by the man who hears them best!
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

I have issues with the mix on Landed too, Hyde
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

Or do you mean this one? Oh, probably the same mix anyway. Same sessions, I'm pretty sure
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

i just pictured Doug Schulkind riding out to dispense justice on a rig with giant drums like that thing in Mad Max Fury Road
Avatar 9:31pm hyde:

yeah, i meant Landed. the mix sounds not quite right to me, esp. the drums.
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

with his fro and maracas, just scorching the earth and taking no prisoners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh the damage I could do with a twirling pair of wire brushes!
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

guitars on Landed too. lack punch where they need them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Doug Schulkind:

And my trusty sidekick, a rhino named Zildjian.
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

That's a movie yer gonna wanna greenlight, Hollywood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- just came up in fb feed:
Avatar 9:34pm Mayuko:

that Midnight Men was so good, gave me goose bumps.
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Can't wait to read that, Rabbit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Uncle Michael:

I'm off to bed but I'm gonna keep streaming. Great stuff Evan. Don't kick the Can.
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Sweet weird dreams, Uncle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks to the melatonin...you know it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm melinda:

This is kind of creepy in a good way.
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

god this one is so weird
Avatar 9:56pm Flash Strap:

I know I'm starting to overstay my welcome here, but I just can't stop! I'll be done before 10:30 I swear
Avatar 9:56pm coelacanth:

i'm so Thankful for this show; and Thankful that you gave it the 1-1/2 show treatment! i got a call from a friend i haven't communicated with in 15 years and was only 1/2 listening for an hour...but- i would've revisited this show anyway!
Avatar 9:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks Flash, this made for a wonderful evening. Ciao!
Avatar 9:57pm coelacanth:

i'm intrigued over the frosting!
Avatar 10:00pm hyde:

you should just use Doug's recent description of this show as your slogan: "it starts at 7, we don't know when it's going to end!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm melinda:

Overtime, yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Gary:

Terrific show -- thanks, Evan!
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:

That seems right, doesn't it? "From nine till question marks!"
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:

Thank you NGH and Gary!
Avatar 10:02pm Flash Strap:

And thank you, melinda for celebrating my overtime!
Avatar 10:02pm coelacanth:

Evan i think you've spoiled us to the point that you're only going over if you're more than an hour over!
Avatar 10:04pm Flash Strap:

I know, this is pretty reliably turning into a 2.5-3 hr show! And tonight I'm going past THAT

I have no self control, but then again music has no real need of such control in most cases. Unless you're followed by another show
Avatar 10:05pm Flash Strap:

This is seriously maybe a top 10 Can track for me
Avatar 10:05pm Flash Strap:

oh god! the colors!
Avatar 10:07pm coelacanth:

one day the drummer stream schedule will fill, and i will seriously miss the loose structure (free-form,shall we say?) of this program.
Avatar 10:08pm hyde:

say it aint so, coelacanth!
Avatar 10:08pm Mayuko:

I won't be able to go to bed until very late tonight for my work, so I'll be here listening no matter how long you keep going on all night, and I wish you would! haha.
Avatar 10:09pm Flash Strap:

May it never come to pass quite thusly, C.

I'm here for at least another 10, Mayuko, thanks for stickin' with me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Doug Schulkind:

You might as well just stay up until 9am, Mayuko. Because, I don't know...no reason.
Avatar 10:12pm Flash Strap:

This stuff is intense if you look at the vibrating Damo gif
Avatar 10:13pm Mayuko:

haha, good idea, Doug! A very nice thing should happen at 9am, I guess, and I 100 times more prefer that than commuting in the hurricane to work!!
Avatar 10:15pm hyde:

ok, i need to at least get IN bed even if i'm not shutting off the tunes just yet. thanks for the show, Flash! see you all around the stream.
Avatar 10:16pm Flash Strap:
