This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Heya Flash and fans. Love Damo's singing pose in the pic!

yay, I've been totally in the mood for CAN today! And actually was listening like 30 min ago. Now I can leave the music selection in your dependable hand and happily focus on work.

Howdy! Looking forward to learning about CAN.

As with many bands, I never would've heard Can had it not been for WFMU.
Avatar 7:19pm
hyde:

I actually had a Can revelation the othe day. I was listening to some Manfred Schoof I found on Darker Shade of Blue, and when I looked at the personnel I thought the drummer's name looked familiar. Googled it and et voila--it was Can's original drummer. I never knew Jaki Liebezeit was a free jazz guy first.
Avatar 7:19pm
Flash Strap:

Carmichael, Mayuko, Melinda! Splendid to have you
Avatar 7:21pm
Flash Strap:

I need to hear that, Hyde! I knew he was a free jazz confederate but I haven't heard anything predating Can
Avatar 7:22pm

I really think he's THE drummer of our solar system

I'm so happy to take the reins from here, Mayuko!

he plays on two that I found--The Early Quintet and Voices. I'll zip em up and wing them your way over the weekend. If I forget just remind me.

I love it too, Carmichael. He's such a zero-gravity guy in every way, of course he doesn't stance up like every other singer

Avatar 7:33pm
Flash Strap:

This is where Damo just takes off and leaves the galaxy where all other singers live
Avatar 7:37pm
Mayuko:

It just occurred to me that I never knew why Damo named himself Damo, so I googled it now. This cartoon character from the 60's was the origin! www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp... His name is Dameo which means "I can never do anything right". But Damo never doing things "right" made him the best!
Avatar 7:39pm
Flash Strap:

Wow. That's actually amazing. What a man, what an artist. I really think that his existence itself is meaningfully revolutionary

I have an acquaintance who stayed with him for some time, apparently he's like endlessly kind

  Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
coelacanth:

hyde, he did travel a bit before settling in germany, so-not so dumb!
Avatar 7:55pm
Mayuko:

yah, hyde, he was still in Japan then. It also says in this Japanese wikipedia page that he used to be known as "the youngest homeless/bohemian in Tokyo" when he was 14 back in the 60's... and he organized unofficial The Kinks fan club then. There's so many pretty funny episodes I never knew!
Avatar 7:56pm
Flash Strap:

That's amazing to imagine, Ken. I agree, pump up the Cans!
Avatar 7:57pm
Mayuko:

and that's actually not dumb at all, cos he dropped out high school and head out abroad already in the late 60's. that's what it says here anyway.

haha, still pretty dumb. that's ok. "I can never do anything right!" ;)

i was mostly already starting to think about whether Germany got japanese tv shows in the 60's like we did in the US. i was a big Kimba the White Lion fan!
Avatar 8:02pm

I still need to see that. Tomita did the music!

wow. i'm not at all sure we got the Tomita music on the American version of Kimba. but i haven't seen it in......let's just say it has been some time.
Avatar 8:07pm

it's pre-synth Tomita, I know, so it probably just sounds like movie music. I imagine it's really good, but I have no idea

btw, Mayuko, if any of the Japanese from Damo's otherworldly patois is ever worth pointing out (or even intelligible), I enthusiastically want to know what you know

Avatar 8:33pm
Flash Strap:

UUUUUUUUUUNCLE

hello
Avatar 8:33pm
Flash Strap:

Exactly RRN63. You get it.
Avatar 8:34pm
Mayuko:

You mean what he says when he sometimes sings in Japanese? I can never really understand cos it's very vague and abstract (and so I guess I never even tried.) I can tell that Shikaku = square, maru = circle, ten = dot, and the track "Aumgn" from Tago Mago is a buddhist term 阿吽 which means "the beginning and the end of the universe". And in "Oh Yeah" I think it sounds like he's singing about some crazy guy who sits there by himself and then piss from on top of the rainbow, etc, it just never makes any clear sense to me. (Sorry if i got your question wrong!)
Avatar 8:36pm
Flash Strap:

No you got it right! I know most of what he sings is unintelligible in any language, but what you just translated is actually really interesting. Thanks for sharing your prowess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Doug Schulkind:

Hip hooray for Explorers Womb!
Avatar 8:39pm

I'm not sure if this track was made more in the spirit of the Future Days sessions, or Soon Over Babaluma, but it's definitely one of them
Avatar 8:40pm
Flash Strap:

Welcome to the delivery room, Explorer Doug!
Avatar 8:40pm
Mayuko:

I haven't heard Doko-E yet myself, but people say he sings something pretty comprehensible (for him anyway) about Tokyo being polluted in the Japanese part also.
Avatar 8:41pm
Flash Strap:

Oh I guess we do know: it is definitely Babaluma. Listen to Karoli's violin!
Avatar 8:42pm

Here, I'll play it, Mayuko
Avatar 8:48pm
Mayuko:

oh boo!!I just went to the kitchen to fetch some food at the worst timing!!! :((
Avatar 8:48pm
Flash Strap:

This is the first album after Damo leaves, with Karoli and Schmidt taking over vocals. I think it's really really great, actually. A lot of people talk it down as second-tier, but I think it's just the best possible next step from Future Days. So exoooooootic
Avatar 8:49pm
Flash Strap:

@Mayuko: whoopsy
Avatar 8:50pm
Mayuko:

boo was to myself. I'll go back to your archive later so that I can finally listen to it. thanks for playing!
Avatar 8:53pm
Flash Strap:

That was my first "request" ever on Explorers Room! That I met, at least.
Avatar 8:55pm
Flash Strap:

Sorry to Babaluma/"Chain Reaction" lovers: I started that last track towards the end, mainly to get that insane transition into "Quantum Physics"
Avatar 9:00pm

then that's even more bummer that I missed that special moment of the first request! Besides I think that was also my first ever request I asked a DJ on radio!
