i just went to the Strand and picked up a book about the mad scientists and early tech wizards at Bell Labs. i figured it would be the perfect thing to read with Blumin show ambience.

Īke:

When you say "new heat smell," do you mean that gross paint smell? Along with the hissing, that's something I never encountered before I came to NYC. Bizarre.
  10:12pm
JakeGould:

You mean radiator startup smell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Daniel Blumin:

Hiya, Jack + Cliff! I mean the radiator start up - the smell of disuse coming into use! I miss the growling of my old radiator, Ike. This one's too polite. Just hissing away not singing its heart out!
Avatar 10:17pm
bobdoesthings:

the first winter I moved into my current apartment my radiator would make a horrific piercing loud crying scream .. and it would only happen around 5am-6am in the morning. Landlord took a week to send a guy.. and it took me that long to realize I could wrap an old towel around it to mute it. what a bad week it was. and my bathroom radiator has to be permanently off because of the smell it creates..
Avatar 10:19pm
bobdoesthings:

and when I say loud... it was cover your ears and I'm amazed my neighbors arnet banging at my door.
Avatar 10:19pm
steve:

i cant use one of my radiators because it makes brown stuff ooze from the pipe going from it to the ceiling.
  10:20pm
Mister Eddie:

I stopped using radiators years ago. Now I chew gum.

I miss radiator smell. I’ve lived in some odd places, but NYC radiator startup smell at the beginning of the cold season… It smells like victory.
Avatar 11:16pm
Linda Lee:

@Jake .. if there's one simple thing i miss about living in nyc, it's the herald song of the radiator ..
  11:18pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: Then you’d like my building. Everyone has those whistling steam release valves in the weirdest places. In my apartment the sounds echo weird so it makes me feel like… Jeez… Yeah, I will miss this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
George of Troy:

Daniel! Good evening to ye!
Avatar 11:25pm
Linda Lee:

sure do remember those spittin whistlin valves. .. you say you'll miss it like you're leaving soon .. ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Daniel Blumin:

George! Glad to see ya here! You got a radiator up in Troyland? Or you stoking a wood stove?
Jake and Linda, I always kick myself fer not recording the great sounds my radiator gifted me with back in the day...
  11:28pm
JakeGould:

@Daniel: I’ll make note to record mine then.
Avatar 11:28pm
Linda Lee:

ho Daniel! i'm pretty sure i did record some of that .. who knows where it all went..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
George of Troy:

Just fired up the heat for the first time this season, actually! No radiators, just a lot of hot air.
Avatar 11:32pm
Linda Lee:

i can only imagine having digital sound technology at the time .. 70s, early 80s .. lots of fun!
yep, everyone's firin up the heat today!
  11:36pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: Speaking of digital magic, Kurt Gottschalk played a part of a Steve Miller “remix” made by this very cool music analysis thing. Basically upload an MP3 or choose one that has been uploaded and it will endlessly slice it up and play it. labs.echonest.com...
  11:39pm
JakeGould:

FWIW, I uploaded the Stooges “No Fun” and it’s pretty amazing to watch it do it’s thing. labs.echonest.com...
Avatar 11:39pm
Linda Lee:

love this foussat piece! amazing. .. i wonder if les autres were inspired by the famous rimbaud quote .. 'je est un autre' . i is the other. .. o Jake. i heard that steve miller mix. .. funny, something told me it wasn't done by hand .. i was sorry it was steve miller & not something more interesting. .. there wasn't a lot of 'there' there, if you know what i mean ..
Avatar 11:43pm
Linda Lee:

with an app like that i think it might be sort of, garbage in garbage out .. stooges is probably great!
  11:43pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: Of all of the songs I attempted to upload to that thing, the “No Fun” track is the most convincingly endless. Especially when it hits the heavy solos.
Avatar 11:44pm
Linda Lee:

no doubt! .. what i want to try is spoken word .. i think that will be fun.
Avatar 11:45pm
Linda Lee:

like a william burroughs cut-up!
  11:50pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: I also uploaded Benny Bell’s “Shaving Cream” and it’s a tad cut up… labs.echonest.com...
