thanks for warming up this chilly Catskils morning, Mr. Shelley! love the dahlmanns side. juicy!

Have to disagree that was not a kick-ass rock-n-roll Girl band. That was pretty bland.

@Michael: Please ask John Doe what name he uses when checks into hotels.

Hi all, I wonder, is there a female rocker named JANE DOE? would JOE DOE be an acceptable name for a guy to take? Maybe my next cat will be named CAT DOE. Just rambling, sorry. (More rambling, excerpt of an email I just sent to my pals-- Then Wcbs 88am did a CASSETTE STORE DAY story. Said "3 stores in the area are participating: rough trade, loony tunes, and Iris (?)". I'm v sure I heard correctly, and it makes the listener think other music (for instance) isn't participating. Grrr. )

Linda Lee:

@pss .. i have a low patience threshold for pop. it's like taffy. cloying sometimes. but for pure pop dahlmanns is good. catchy, undemanding. melodic. sometimes that's enough for me. especially first thing in the morning.
  11:31am
PSS:

Linda Lee I couldn't agree more. But Michael's talk up and then to hear that was a bit disappointing. If the members of that band are pre-teens then I apologize. You are correct it was good morning pre-coffee mindless fluff.

I'm curious as to what PSS might consider "not bland"?

God, that voice: John Doe. Hope to hear some discussion of what should be described as a national treasure - still sonorous as ever.
His harmonizing with Exene makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up

@Todd - Michael told me to stop picking on you. (But if I were to not stop picking on you, I'd say...). I once spoke to John Doe while he was selling his merch at music hall of w'burg. I said "Jack BIG TAKEOVER Rabid loved loved loved yr Dim Stars Bright Sky (title?) rec, so I went to buy. Couldn't find, except at Kim's on st Mark's. They had it for $18.98; I gulped and paid. When John heard this, there was a visual shock on his face. anyway, we saw him at Fez during that tour, and so amazing. (As we left, I saw David Byrne at a table)
  11:41am
Linda Lee:

@IFisher .. precise difference in the quality of their voices is what really makes it ..
  11:42am
lhnbt:

What about "He's A Drag", is that bland too? I was just looking for a yardstick.
  11:43am
IFisher:

Well put observation, Linda Lee - thank you! Never thought about it that way.

I thought he was talking about Gloria Steinem, very confusing

'punk' signifying fashion came only after successful branding ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Gaylord Fields:

John Doe couldn't be wronger about Paul McCartney: Paul is one of the weirdest musicians in pop music — and I'm talking about many of his pop hits, not even his deliberately oddball albums, like McCartney II!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Linda Lee: Punk was fashion back when John Lydon was still a gleam in Vivienne Westwood's eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
drr:

He's simply having a wonderful Christmas time.

johnk77:

great show michael
regarding punk fashion, the new chrissie hynde book
reckless has an insider view of london
fashion and music, before and during pistols era:>
  12:16pm
Linda Lee:

not sure about that, Gaylord .. going to cbgb, in 75, 76, 77 .. where the legend has it punk was 'born' on the east coast .. there was no real 'look' at all ... it was pretty piecemeal & low budget. might've been more a fashion thing in the uk. in fact it probably was. so i guess we need differentiation between us & uk 'punk' ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Linda Lee: I think we actually agree more than you think, despite my glib statement. What became widely known as "punk" was a fashion sold in the UK through music and attitudes inspired by NYC in the '70s. (And then some of those coals were sold back to Newcastle.)
  12:34pm
Linda Lee:

yep, agreed. by 79 or 80, yeah, a punk 'style' had pretty much coagulated here on the east coast .. influenced a lot by the brits! .. so that walking down the street looking a certain way the cretins would yell 'punk rock! punk rock!' at you .. to hassle you.
  12:34pm
cee dubbles:

Jimmy Ryan's Mandi & Cheri Knight's sexy voice!
  12:38pm
Linda Lee:

me, i had people calling me 'sir' just to hassle me .. because i shaved my head. long hair was still de rigeur for women. got a lot of drive-by threats & other hassles for looking 'that way'. .. no spikes or leather, just cheap thrift shop pinned together stuff .. androgyny was a big part of punk or 'new wave' that folks tend to forget .. & that's what really got us hassled, if you ask me.
  12:41pm
Stuart Rose:

Bringing coals to Newcastle- Gaylord, you old school allusion merchant.

Disagree a bit with your take on Macca.
He doesn't, as John Doe said, have an authentic dark side(but who cares). He does have a whimsical side, an Edward Lear. Uncle Albert comes to mind.
But you know his music better than I, so I'll check out that first album again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
drr:

Last time I saw john Doe live (New Orleans, maybe ten years ago) I recall he was wearing a yellow button down shirt with the cuffs buttoned. Looked brand new. It was the least punk garment you can imagine. Good show.
  12:45pm
Linda Lee:

is it safe for me to say John Doe's new duets can't touch the duets with Exene? he's off the line now .. don't like dissing the guest. loved hearing him. nice interview!
  12:46pm
Linda Lee:

@drr .. not punk, but def New Wave :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm

McCartney doesn't have a dark side? What about "Temporary Secretary"?

My mate was telling me of seeing Wreckless Eric in Glascow - in a corner, almost completely ignowed, the weegies not knowing what to make of him
  12:47pm

When I think of John Doe on stage, I think of the black mesh sleeveless number. And Exene in the potato sack dress.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
drr:

Linda Lee: it was actually less New Wave and more warehouse office temp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Stuart Rose: He's made a ton of music (some quite dark), and I'm talking about his totality, not just his hits. Start with McCartney II.
  12:47pm
Stuart Rose:

Yeah, Linda, these duets don't have the tension, the pulling away and embracing again the Exene duets have.
  12:50pm
Linda Lee:

isn't McCartney the guy who sang 'go back home Loretta .. your mother's waiting .. in her low necked sweater'. ugly anti gay bit. plus word is he's just a prick. @drr .. believe it or not, there's not such a gap there! if you can, check out NY No Wave artists late 70s, early 80s .. they all dressed like dweebs.
  12:51pm

thanks, Stuart. sorry i have to agree. i don't think it's just nostalgia.. my ears still work.
