Simpsons Time Feast Day! Cowabunga, Man!

That's the spirit.

listener james from westwood:

Can't join live today (proofing word for word) but will DL this from the archives for an upcoming long, early-morning drive!! So glad you've done another one of these!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

PREACH!
  12:02pm
Sean:

Damn, there will be more stars on the Scenario today than there are in the skies!
  12:02pm
P-90:

Just curious: when was this recorded?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
Amanda:

@P-90, it was recorded in several parts over the past few weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

No way was Bart into new jack swing AND Spinal Tap…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Jeff Golick:

Doing the Bart pretty aggressively over here.
  12:05pm
P-90:

In several parts? Sounds like quite a logistical effort.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Amanda:

Honestly, it almost gave me a heart attack but I'm so pleased with the resultz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Amanda:

@Greg, AND as well this whole show has an undercurrent of understanding just how important Michael Jackson was to the Simpsons. Bart was so freeform
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Milhous ultimately in the future ends up Mr. Lisa & zombified ?
...I finally caught a few episodes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

Michael Jackson was at *least* as important as Leon Kompowsky from Paterson, NJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Amanda:

Yes, good job catching up @RR! In "Holidays of Future Passed" they are shown married, and then in "Days of Future Future" he is zombified.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Amanda:

SIMPSONS TRIVIA BROOKLYN takes place at Berry Park on the first Thursday of every month. See you guys there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

Interesting Greg from ZONE 5 trivia: I have the number 237 tattooed on my arm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Amanda:

What nerdy tattoo DON'T you have???
  12:32pm

@Amanda I'd love to check it out some time! I assume there's a website with the meeting times etc.

The nights I was at NiteHawk, the period commercials added HUGELY to the fun! Even more than one might guess they would.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm

@Amanda: I don't have an Adobe Illustrator pen tool tattoo. Yet.

"Streetcar!" was one of the most brilliant things EVER.
Avatar 12:46pm
steve:

that episode had me thinking Streetcar was a musical forever
Avatar 12:46pm
Cheyenne:

Yes ma'am! I entered Rita into the pet contest too so everyone can gaze upon her whiskery, derpy toothed countenance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Amanda:

Oh, totally -- I saw Llewellyn Sinclair's production way before I ever saw the real Streetcar. I think Dan and Kris and I actually talked about this after our interview that night too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

Haha! I thought Gaylord said "...when they went to Wilkes-Barre…"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm

Ideas for Season 30

P-90:

"Nelson as a tragic figure" -exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@P-90 - The Planet of the Apes medley also ranks right up there, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm

@Greg from ZONE 5: You watch your whore tongue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm

Thanks for interviewing me, Gaylord!!! <3

You have beef with the W-B? Maybe I should e-mail Brian about that.

MONOTHINGY
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I like the scene where the bullies plaster Milhouse with Quimby bumper stickers and then send him downhill in a shopping cart like a mummy on his mystical journey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Amanda:

Oh, poor Milhouse. I love that too...
  1:00pm
P-90:

The Planet of the Apes thing is classic too. And South Park has done some brilliant parodies of how "Broadway" adaptations work. I recommend tracking down the episode of the National Lampoon Radio Hour, from '72 or so, that's all about staging a "Moby Dick" musical at a community theater. It's like the founding patriarch-progenitor of all these parodies that have come ever since. And I'm 100% sure the Simpsons writers were familiar with it when they did "Streetcar!" etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

I love this. It's like everybody is hanging out at work with me.
Avatar 1:01pm
Cheyenne:

I'm so, so glad that fair use applies to parody. It's one of the most valuable loopholes in copyright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Greg from ZONE 5: Look behind you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Amanda:

And I bet Weird Al is grateful for that too!
  1:03pm
P-90:

@Cheyenne: if satire and parody weren't protected, our civilization would fall...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

Oh yeah! There was an old radio version of that Bradbury story…either Dimension X or X Minus 1.
  1:10pm
P-90:

@Greg: and an unfortunate movie version directed by Peter Hyams, can't recommend it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Gaylord Fields:

I'll correct more Simpsons German: Sideshow Bob should have said, "Der Bart, der!" — joke be damned!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Amanda:

YAY, thank you, Joshua H. in Seattle for your generous Simpsons-centric pledge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Mike East:

anyone who speaks german CAN'T be evil...parole granted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Amanda:

Ah, Gaylord, that breaks my heart about the Die Bart Die joke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Gaylord Fields:

I have my very own Simpsons niche now — the foreign-language proofreader/joke killer!
  1:18pm
P-90:

I would definitely have come out and represented at the "Marcia Wallace memorial night"! fox screwed the pooch on that one bug time. Which is what they do, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Amanda:

Before I forget, I really owe Dan one. He had his digital voice recorder at the ready from work (he works for Noisey as a music writer) and he recorded this interview rather than have me use my phone! Yay for me being a slob!

I hope also that the nice ambience in Lo-Res Bar is apparent from these bits.
  1:21pm
P-90:

@Amanda: yes, nice ambience in the mix!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Amanda:

Simpsons Club takes place every Monday at 10PM at Lo-Res Bar, downstairs from Nitehawk Cinemas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Amanda:

Nobody chose Database as their favorite Springfield kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Amanda:

5 and a half out of 10. Shameful.
  1:29pm
Nate K:

I was 5/10 on the Nelson quiz. Amanda, I think we need to represent.
  1:30pm
Nate K:

I snagged that .5 too, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Amanda:

I'm going next week, Nate! Come with!
  1:32pm
P-90:

Rod & Todd: underrated Springfield kids, good call Therese!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Nate K:

I like when Bart shows Rod & Todd an Itchy & Scratchy and Todd says, "Dad, should I poke Rod with a sharp thing like the mouse did?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Amanda:

"What's that red stuff coming out of kitty's ears?"
  1:40pm
P-90:

"Marge be not Proud": one of the best of the best
"Bart Carney": forgot about that one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Amanda:

I think Bart Carney was the second Simpsons Time I ever did, about 2 years ago.
Avatar 1:42pm
steve:

"Everything's coming up Milhouse" is probably the line I hear people quote most often in daily life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Amanda:

@steve, I'm waiting for "Way to go, Moon Milhouse!" to become more popular.

Bump for Dr. John playing piano on this song!
  1:42pm
P-90:

That "mix of high and low culture' is absolutely key, it's intrinsic to the Mad Magazine, Firesign Theater, and Monty Python formulae as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Quoting Ned Flanders: Homer, I can honestly say that was the best episode of Impy & Chimpy I've ever seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Amanda:

YAY just got a pledge from my buddy Will in Washington Heights! Thx man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
Amanda:

Carl: "You should be very proud, Homer. You've... got a beautiful home here."
  1:49pm
P-90:

Lunch ladies in general are always somehow terrifying to little kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'mix of high and low culture'...if only I could find a stream like that to listen to somewhere...hmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

To finish that scene from Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie:
Bart: "Mom, can we go to bed without dinner?"
Marge: "Yes, we can!"
Marge and the kids run upstairs and slam the bedroom doors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

Thanks, Amanda and panel of superstars!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Amanda:

Programming Notes:
1. I did a special Simpsons Time with Nate for this show, but it had to be cut for time! You'll hear it next week during Simpsons Time proper.
2. Don't worry, Dan and Kris -- you are thanked at the very end after this track plays us out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@Amanda - Thanks for this outstanding show. I hope you have a good Halloween, and hopefully with a treehouse of horror for good measure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Amanda:

Thank you so much, @Ken! The same to you. Will tell you about it next week. Thanks everybody - especially those who pledged this month. Still a couple of days left. xoxox
  2:00pm
P-90:

Thanks Amanda! Way to go, Moon Nazario!
