Evening, kids.

rw:

Hey! Something about the sound of Michael Rother... not sure why but I could listen to it for hours.
  10:06pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Yeah, this opening track is great. Thanks, Dave, for introducing me to it.

Hey, rw. Yeah, I'm not sure what it is. Soothing?

Ellen Fullman. God, I have a disc by her ("Body Music," I think) that I haven't listened to in many years, and had all but forgotten about. Time to revisit. Different from this-- long, much more minimal, droning compositions; if memory serves.

sweet!

this is mastered differently. i never heard that banjo so prominently before.

(Eyepatch) Fox:

I think I used to follow Momus on livejournal. Which is weird, because I don't own any of his music.
Avatar 10:54pm
Dave Mandl:

Could be. It's a recent reissue.

YAY!! Momus! My favorite one-eyed pop star.

Momus reminds me... at least at moments, of Peter Blegvad. Never heard of him before.
Avatar 10:55pm
Dave Mandl:

Does he really have one eye, or just wear a patch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I had to make sure this wasn't Donovan...
Avatar 10:55pm
HollyT:

He does have the eye, I think, but is completely blind in it. Some sort of eye disease.
Avatar 10:56pm
Dave Mandl:

Ah, I didn't know that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth:

interesting perspective in that Momus song. i have to go back to that again.
(and i too thought it was Donovan for a sec)

wigkey: ...'In his lyrics and his other writing he makes seemingly random use of decontextualized pieces of continental (mostly French) philosophy, and has built up a personal world he says is "dominated by values like diversity, orientalism, and a respect for otherness." He is fascinated by identity, Japan, Rome, the avant-garde, time travel and sex'...
Well - aren't we all...

Via wikipedia: "In December 1997, he contracted acanthamoeba keratitis in his right eye due to a contact lens mishap sustained whilst on holiday in Greece, causing loss of vision on that side."
Avatar 11:00pm
Dave Mandl:

Wow, so the eye accident is (relatively) recent. No wonder I didn't know about it.
Avatar 11:01pm
Dave Mandl:

Sorry to hear that.

Don't make fun of people with one eye!
Avatar 11:09pm

I'm writing about a character with one eye, so I am very sensitive to the issues of the monocular population, PMD!
Avatar 11:11pm
HollyT:

Thanks for the on-air shout-out, DM
  11:12pm
PMD:

@ Holly I meant it kind of as a joke. I know neither Dave not you were making fun
Avatar 11:12pm
Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Least I can do.
@PMD: I'd never do that. I'm practically a one-eyed person myself.
  11:13pm
rw:

I had a friend when I was in my late teens who had a glass eye. There was a freeway overpass that always freaked him out to drive over. I always thought he was being overly sensitive until I tried driving over it with one eye closed. You lose your depth perception with only one eye and it WAS pretty freaky.
Avatar 11:13pm
Dave Mandl:

(One very weak eye. I was actually supposed to wear an eye-patch when I was a kid, but I refused.)
Avatar 11:15pm
Dave Mandl:

I don't think I see in full 3-D.

I think Dozzy has mastered cat purring as an instrument.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm

i wore a patch over my right eye,as a child,and it helped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth:

...not to rub it in! ...i did plenty of other things i could regret!
Avatar 11:21pm
HollyT:

I wore an eye patch for like a week back in high school because I had some kind of gross eye infection or something. I hot-glued sequins all over it. I was a very strange teenager.
Avatar 11:23pm
Dave Mandl:

The idea is that you wear a patch over the strong eye to strengthen the weak one, but I wasn't going to walk around with a patch on my eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth:

ha! well if you got to wear an eye patch you might as well rock it!
  11:23pm
rw:

Dave, maybe if it had sequins?
  11:25pm

Okay, maybe not.
Avatar 11:25pm
Dave Mandl:

@rw: 'Fraid not.

amblyopia? (believe it or not, i remember this from a story line in "Peanuts" when i was a kid)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
pacific standard simon:

I used to keep a list of famous people with only one eye. There's a surrealist painter who actually painted a prophetic self portrait in which he's missing an eye that he had at the time he did the painting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
coelacanth:

i certainly was self-conscious...maybe i didn't feel so bad about it 'cause my school had one kid with a hearing-aid; another with crippling arthritis; a few with "coke-bottle glasses"...
or maybe i was just already used-to being a freak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm

Depth perception is the biggest hassle. Worse than Zapp Brannigan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

Here it is. He lost the eye years later when he was hit in the face by another surrealist painter.

(Eyepatch) Fox:

I wear an eyepatch. It's because my eye muscles tire out and go crossed when I try to use my eyes together and I end up seeing double. I'd had vision problems since I went unexplicably crosseyed at 19, and I'd always tried prism glasses. But then out of necessity I had to use an eyepatch a few years ago and really dug it. It's so much easier, cheaper, AND I get to look like a SUPERVILLAIN! It's a win-win-win.

Thanks slugluv. it was a major character after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

@(Eyepatch) Fox - It's buried somewhere in my papers, but it IS very long. Ry Cooder and Peter Falk come immediately to mind.

Hey everyone, I'm new to these parts. I fell down a rabbit hole searching for kindred sounds and have ended up here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm

there are/were several reggae artists who had/have use of just one eye, but the local custom seems to be to not cover it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm

I myself am severely nearsighted and, with age, have developed permanent floaters that bob and weave in my field of vision like super-powered gnats. Makes reading a challenge.

(Eyepatch) Fox:

Simon: reading chunks of text is hard for me as well, and I miss devouring books like I used to, but I'm happy to live in an era when so much is adapted to audio. When I'm not listening to WFMU I'm either listening to Big Finish audioplays, or news or something. There's so much to fill your head with, and such ease with which to fill your mobile device!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
coelacanth:

i saw some bullcrap on "scishow" on boobtube saying floaters are genetic and inevitable; but i'm positive that the majority of my many (& increasing) floaters are the result of all the dust, bugs, etc. i get in my eyes on a regular basis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Yah, that typo was little less strategic than usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth:

ha! i didn't even notice it! there must've been a floater in the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
pacific standard simon:

@coelacanth - My moms has the same nearsightedness that I have, and had the same floaters. She had some kind of surgery for them, which I am reluctant to pursue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Good night, Dave. See you next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
coelacanth:

maybe it's genetic some of the time, or the result of learned habits from generation to generation...and maybe some of mine are too; but not them all, i'm sure.
