James Kolchalka was known to me through comics as an indie cartoonist. It was amazing that he was a well known comic guy, and had this wierd musician thing on the side, and all the while still worked as a host at a Chinese restaurant.

Dub Housing is one of my true changed-my-life touchstone albums. It hit me like an aesthetic karate chop when it came out in '79. Grabbing it was one of my first steps on the road that led to a life-long citizenship in the FMUniverse.

Bill Mac:

Hey Jake, ahhh, so it's out the on the internets! I'll review this later.
  11:47pm
JakeGould:

Also, “Contrary to popular belief, most of the sampling for Paul's Boutique was cleared, but at dramatically lower costs compared to today's prevailing rates. A 2005 article by Paul Tingen about The Dust Brothers reveals that "most of the samples used on Paul's Boutique were cleared, easily and affordably, something that [...] would be 'unthinkable' in today's litigious music industry.”
Avatar 11:49pm
Bill Mac:

@Parq - actually for me it was "The Art of Walking"
Avatar 11:50pm
Bill Mac:

@Jake - I must've heard something along these lines awhile ago and the take away was that it would be almost impossible to do the same today.
  11:52pm
JakeGould:

@BillMac: Yup. The record companies realized that suddenly they had a new way to suck blood out of a rights/permissions corpse after that album. Or maybe it was the Biz Markie “Alone Again” sample issue that make they lawyers go nuts? Somehow connected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Parq:

Bill, I had a good pal who was really into "The Modern Dance" but I just wasn't ready yet. Of course, I went back and glommed on it later.
