How do, Tony and all! Let's get hissy!

a hoy-hoy!
Avatar 12:03pm
Cecile:

is this the Hunting Lodge from Detroit?
  12:04pm
Dean:

On board here, but can't listen. The LP cover is unfamiliar, but it looks mildly New-Wavey, c.1980. Tapes look fascinating today.
Avatar 12:06pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Listener James, Cecile, & Dean!
Avatar 12:07pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: This Hunting Lodge is from Michigan: rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar 12:08pm
Cecile:

I saw them 1-2 times. They were great.
  12:08pm
Dean:

Since I'm not listening today, I'll dub the show Tape Fog.

coelacanth:

hello Tony and others
Avatar 12:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, coelacanth!
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean, re cover: You're in the right ballpark. It is an '80s group.
  12:14pm
Dean:

23 Skiddoo?
Avatar 12:14pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Ah, that's interesting that you saw Hunting Lodge! One sometimes forgets that these kinds of groups actually existed in the "real world."
  12:15pm
βrian:

Rotting Christ?
Avatar 12:16pm
Cecile:

they were good and intense. I remember them opening up for an out-of-town band in a church basement or something. They were loud, powerful, and excellent. Too bad I was too lazy to seek out more shows and recordings.
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: If you're talking about the mystery LP, you're getting close!!
Avatar 12:18pm
Cecile:

crispy ambulance?
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Nope. I suspect βrian actually recognizes the LP, but is misremembering the title. (Of course, maybe it was just a lucky stab in the dark.)
  12:20pm
βrian:

Well, there's *something* rotten in Denmark?
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Something is "Rotting," yes!
  12:22pm
Dean:

I was gonna guess Hunters & Collectors, but the clues dismiss them.
Avatar 12:24pm
βrian:

Doesn't look like the Dead Kennedys.
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

I won't torture you all anymore. It's a Velvet Monkeys comp: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 12:28pm
Cecile:

this is one of the best tapes you've played, Tony.
  12:28pm
Dean:

Well, that's hilarious.
  12:29pm
Dean:

(The LP cover identity, I mean.)
Avatar 12:30pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Glad you like it! It comes with a nifty newspaper-format zine/arts mag.
Avatar 12:32pm
Cecile:

we kind of underrated the Detroit scene a little in Ann Arbor. They had some good stuff. But this was pre-internet. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
JtotheK:

master mixup - this is great!
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Talking of seeing these bands live, I saw Big City Orchestra just a few years ago here in Portland, plus (ages ago) I saw Viscera -- who open side B of the cassette -- in a Brooklyn bar.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
listener james from westwood:

That was a lotta splicin' and tapin' right there!
Avatar 12:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Almost a bit Steinski-esque!
Avatar 12:41pm

The voice here sounds a bit like Irwin Chusid, no? (It's not him, of course.)
Avatar 12:46pm

Fredrik Nilsen (on now) is a core L.A.F.M.S. member and is in the Doo-Dooettes, Airway, Extended Organ, and a bunch of other projects. www.discogs.com...

OK, finally made it to the big shoe. This sounds interesting. Like something Bryce would play.
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Carmichael!
  12:50pm
Dean:

I think I might have seen BPeople live, probably at Al's Bar, or maybe I just remember hearing about them playing there. Nilsen was in that band.
Avatar 12:51pm
Tony Coulter:

He was!
  12:59pm
MrFab:

if Nilsen is in Airway, I just saw them last year.

Just got in 5 mins ago. Wish I could have heard this tape from the beginning, Woe is me! (Woe is a me-bop!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm

...but each would be fine without the other.
Avatar 1:06pm

Avatar 1:10pm
V Priceless:

kinda Forbidden Planety
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Forgot to mention: There are no track titles on this Steve Gore tape.
Avatar 1:13pm
Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Here in Southeast Portland we have door-to-door tamale sellers. There's no need to ever go outside.
  1:15pm
Dean:

Funny, I'm now enjoying audio and text here, having just returned home and heated up a couple tamales I made with my m-i-l two days ago.
Avatar 1:16pm
Tony Coulter:

Some of the tracks on this tape were issued digitally over the last few years, on bandcamp: rascalreporters.bandcamp.com

the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Tony Is much of the Rascal Reporters cassette stash you were sent in the 'Canterbury' vein (as was the track you played a few weeks ago, the only thing I've heard from them)?
Avatar 1:19pm
Carmichael:

Found an unofficial bio of the late Mr. Gore: www.progarchives.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm

and this guy's voice reminds me of Nick the Bard.
Avatar 1:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Woodelf! A fair amount of the tapes I got are in a Canterbury vein -- but they are really all over the place, even on a single tape.

Enjoyed your latest Canterbury show very much, by the way!

That sarangi--or is it a reed instrument?--is from Harrison's Wonderwall Music.
Avatar 1:31pm

Indeed it is! That's my favorite Beatles-related album. And now here's Yoko....

The fourteenth Beatle right there.
  1:33pm
Dean:

My favorite Beatles-related albums are their bootlegs.

Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Was just thinking the same thing!
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

...as what βrian said, I mean. MrFab got ahead of me....
  1:37pm
Dean:

Nope. They hear sounds through their floppy ears, just like us.
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Speak for yourself -- my ears aren't floppy.
Avatar 1:46pm

These guys are outdoing themselves! Thanks Tony!
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Webhamster Henry!
Avatar 1:50pm
βrian:

Well, a little silicone shim fixed that.
Avatar 1:50pm
Tony Coulter:

One big problem Rascal Reporters had was that people expected/wanted them to be a prog band, just because they sometimes were. As you can hear from this tape, there was a lot more to them than a single style of music.
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

tho, again, this is mostly Gore stuff....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm

i must depart now.

Webhamster Henry:

Yeah! Let's listen for the word : Borborygmus!
Avatar 2:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Perhaps the word should be "peristaltic" not "renistaltic"? I just write what I see....
  2:41pm

I like Renistaltic Sounds In Gastrointestinal Obstruction's early stuff. Buncha sell-outs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm

I mean, it's no 'Excision of a Vulvar Cyst' but it still rocks plenty.
