Mental richness should be worried just as physical richness. . . . I think it is nice to abandon what you have as much as possible, as many mental possession as the physical ones, as they clutter your mind. It is nice to maintain poverty of environment, sound, thinking and belief. It is nice to keep oneself small like a grain of rice, instead of expanding, and make yourself dispensable like paper. See little, hear little, and think little. -- Yoko Ono, January 23, 1966, "To the Wesleyan People (who attended the meeting), a footnote to my lecture of January 13th, 1966"

I think Yoko....maybe moved on/away from those perspectives of being and having in her life. She didn't discuss them with me, but that's just, y'know, a guess given, y'know, surface glimpses.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm listener james from westwood:

Ain't no Xmas Eve party like an Esquivel party!
Avatar 12:44pm annie:

i think "i want it now" was veruca salt, a girl.. unless it's been way too long since i've seen WW
Avatar 12:46pm sugarplum fairywolf:

@annie: yeah, that was Veruca, at least in the original movie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Parq:

No, Annie, you got it right. In the remake (uneven at best), the updated Veruca Salt song is the original Rolly Dahl lyrics (edited), set to a psych-bubblegum arrangement by Danny Elfman, easily the best scene in the movie.
Avatar 12:47pm ndbob:

yep Annie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm listener james from westwood:

@annie: Correct! Violet Beauregard was the gum chewer who ran afoul of the complete-meal gum and blueberried up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

I was taken to WW when it came out, as a, what, 2 year old. (The early 70s were a different time in parenting.) I got terrorized when Augustus Gloop got stuck in the pipe and FLED the theater. Weirdly, once the film became a holiday staple, I loved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Charlie:

yes, veruca salt, a girl. although little boys can sound a lot like little girls if you don't know who's singing
Avatar 12:50pm sugarplum fairywolf:

I just watched the first season of Black Mirror with Mr Salt's IRL son. #BAEOFPIGS never forget.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm listener james from westwood:

@Charlie: I seem to recall there being a bit of contemporary confusion along those lines re: Wayne Newton and "Danke Schoen."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Mike East:

@sugarplum fairywolf - I didn't realize that was his son, but now that you mention it, there's a very strong resemblence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Parq:

Mondagreen time. The first time I ever heard this 10CC song, I thought they were saying "I want to be a bus."
Avatar 12:54pm annie:

omg, yes... when Wane newton was on "I love lucy" i really had a problem deciding if he was a man or a woman. and.. @sugarplum: that's a hellova series.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Charlie:

oh yeah, @james, i remember hearing that re Wayne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Charlie:

I wanna be a bus who rules the world.
Avatar 12:56pm annie:

may i start drinking now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Mike East:

The first time I heard Nina Simone, I thought it was a man.
Avatar 12:59pm sugarplum fairywolf:

@annie: the Christmas episode airs on Netflix on, uh, Christmas, so I figured I should start watching this week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Parq:

The remake was indeed called "Charlie and". I had high hopes for it, and I dug the musical numbers (see above), but I thought overall it was a grotesquely missed opportunity.
Avatar 1:01pm annie:

it's a very creative and intriguing series, i really would love to see more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Mike East:

thanks for that tip, sugarwolf...I've been waiting to see that one. Jon Hamm stars, I think

@Parq - my 3 yr old has been into the johnny depp version. I hated it at first, though now its starting to grow on me. Can't compare it to the original, though.
Avatar 1:02pm still b/p:

I just looked at the scene of the ranks of glum workers searching the product for the golden ticket at Veruca's Dad's direction. Nice visuals.

I just looked a few days ago at Wayne Newton singing a few numbers on the Danny Kaye Show. A friend told me about Get TV, and then i discovered it was in my channels, and I saw the King Family and Judy Garland and Mitzi Gaynor and Andy Williams and Perry Como, all making with the Christmas. Fantastic, fascinating, curious, nostalgic and awful all at once -- talent and schmaltz and a persistently whitebread wonderland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Charlie:

annie -- it's five o'clock somewhere...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Charlie:

@Parq -- might check the remake for the musical numbers, but couldn't bring myself to see it at first, maybe now is the time...

Charlie, save yourself a lot of trouble and watch the musical numbers on Youtube. Here's the Veruca song:
