The music career that White-Out made possible. Happy 73rd, Mike.

Parq:

Nifty story about Mike, told by Bobby Hart at his Monty Hall appearance earlier this year. The cover photo of their first album (see photo link below) shows the other three flashing big smiles and Mike pursing his lips. According to Bobby, the boys were dragged off the set for that photo shoot. Mike, impatient, told the photographer that he would tolerate only ten shots. What we see in that album photo is Mike uttering the word "seven".

One more and then I'll stop. Is "Some of Shelly's Blues" the answer song to "Different Drum"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Amanda:

Your first statement is false, Parq! Mike joined the Monkees when (and because) he was broke. He didn't see his Liquid Paper inheritance until the late 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Parq:

Amanda, hon, my point exactly. That's when he started making the music he really wanted to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Amanda:

It could certainly be taken that way. I mean, if Different Drum is sung by the girl, which more famously it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm

Well, I guess then you mean two separate careers but I don't buy that they can be separated.

Mike told Gottfried the wool cap was to keep his hair outta his eyes when motorcycling; Mike said he BS-ed a reporter the Monkees sold 35mil albums, more than the Beatles in '67, and it got picked up as fact to this day

The personal accounts about each Monkee I have heard are fascinatingly all over the place. It's like no two people can agree on which one is the nicest, coolest, or least nice or craziest or whatever. And I'm sure they change from day to day. The exception is that *almost* everyone says Micky is super nice.

Read a great interview with John Ware a while back. Think it might have been in an old Zigzag, coincidentally it was Zigzag's fifth birthday concert that Mr N was playing when I saw him.

I'll bet a Simpsons/Monkees crossover episode would have been downright hilarious if they did it right. They both use off-beat humor quite a bit.

Nez once astutely surmised that the Monkees would have been a real band if everyone was on different instruments: Micky as frontman/guitar, Peter as lead guitar, Davy as drummer/vocalist (Davy was actually a decent drummer pre-Monkees), and himself on bass/vox.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Gaylord Fields:

@johnk77: This is from Michael Nesmith. After all, show producers Rafelson and Schneider weren't going to bury Davy behind the kit, so that's why Micky got the gig. Keep in mind that the Columbia Pictures–contracted Davy was the only "given" for the Monkees project.

We had a Monkees comic book when we were kids. The boys got a job at a zoo. Their boss told Mickey (I think?) to feed the lions and tigers, too. So he fed the lions some ants and was about to give the tigers their stew. Hoo boy.
