Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
I like the Simpsons scene where Homer thought Marge might not be his soulmate. In Moe's bar, he finds a colleague, a sympathizer, a compadre, etc. Moe says "I'm a well-wisher in that I don't wish you any specific harm." That being said, I hope no harm comes to you in 2016, Gaylord!
I've just discovered these early Ferrante & Teicher recordings (via the Christmas album, of course). They're something else. Experimental easy listening, is that a genre?
I've been known to troll the noise DJs and the whiny out of tune hipster music that irks me here in the comments, but I do come also for praise, and Gaylord, you deserve it. I think you are my single favorite music DJ here, you embody what I perceive as the soul of FMU

"....with special guests charo! fred travelina! that guy in the bear costume from the andy williams show! and featuring the fmu orchestra with the gaylord fields dancers!"
@dale: I have an Ike Cole (her uncle) cut I won't get to, and I used to work with Natalie's sister 30 years ago. That's it for my Natalie Cole connection.
@BILL: You know how one little pig made his house out of bricks, and the other was cheap and made it out of wood and another made it out of straw… Same thing… But with records.
