Sounds from the archive of the future, sonic drilling into the past, dissonant rumbling, lyrical melodies, noises (human, animal, mechanical, digital) inscrutable yet honest, desultory but consistent.

I have After the Ball. I thought I was getting some weird Fahey does disco record.
Avatar 11:24pm
Inner Ear Detour:

Howdy Coelacanth. Nice to be back for a spell.
@ Northguineahills--It's pretty dismal as cover art goes, ain't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
northguineahills:

@Inner Ear Detour: Exactly, but seeing as I've never been disappointed in Fahey (I even like his xmas albums), I picked up anyways, and I was glad I did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Ike:

Does this mean it's time for a "best albums with worst cover art" discussion or have we already done that before? Because I can't remember any really ugly ones right off the top of my head, though I could cheat and refer to this article: www.avclub.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
northguineahills:

Most of those covers aren't that band, some are rather generic and unimaginative. Now, Whitehouse and Boyd Rice have some some wholly awful album covers that require mind bleach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
pacific standard simon:

Jeez, most of those covers are just horrible. I kind of like the Belle + Sebastian one, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
pacific standard simon:

Time changes everything; looking back, Richard Hamilton's cover for The Beatles (white album) looks pretty insipid, but at the time, it was a serious statement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Ike:

Actually, yeah, I think I got that article confused w/a different one. That one really didn't pick the most eye-searing cover art, and there's nothing wrong w/the B&S cover at all. Although that PJ Harvey cover is pretty wretched.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
northguineahills:

I actually liked many of those covers. The MIA one is rather busy, but it also looks like one of those 80s Culture album covers, so I give it a pass. Timberlake's was the worst of the bunch, so little effort went into to it it's offensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
coelacanth:

i think the majority of disco-era disco,r & b,rock and "jazz" album covers are horrendous. they suit the scenes though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
coelacanth:

i liked the mia cover because yeah, it looks like some 70s' reggae covers; then i looked at it more closely.

the deerhoof cover's good! (of course!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
northguineahills:

Oh, and thanks Ike, for sharing, I hadn't seen most of those covers, and these days we don't associate music w/ cover art as often (and I've probably heard most of the music listed there somewhere).

Call me old school, but I always like the Millie Jackson album covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

that Bowie cover's terrible; as is the ghost-face killa...surprising,right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth:

yes. Millie Jackson sitting on a toilet. love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
pacific standard simon:

With the advent of the CD era, listeners began paying less attention to liner notes and songwriting credits. With the advent of the MP3 era, listeners began paying less attention to cover art. I can't count all the boxes of empty CDs I've found on the street, complete with the paper inserts.

Will always remember seeing John Rebourn for the first time in Edinburgh in 1990. What a musician.
