I think it's the touring and actual performing that can even do in the clean living people. My dad lived like a rock star (if rock stars did metallurgy) until 50. He cut out smoking, and cut back on drinking, and even in his crazy days wasn't travelling for work near as much as even semi-retired rock stars. He made it to 81, but he also stayed home and got better after his periodic health scares. It seems to be because of outside or inside pressures musicians stay on the road a lot longer than they should.

No, he's a teetotaler. Didn't stop him for faking crazy to be classified as 4F during 'nam, though.
