Akoko Nante Ensemble - NYC's African Drum Juggernaut

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Percussion juggernaut Akoko Nante Ensemble bases its powerful music on folk traditions of Ghana. But their dynamic sound also reflects the angst and energy of growing up in Queens, New York.

Akoko Nante celebrates the release of their superb debut CD Nkrabea / Destiny with two shows in Harlem: At The Shrine, 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd tonight (Saturday February 6th) at 9; and at Silvana, 300 W 116th St on Saturday night February 27th.

Note: There is no cover charge for shows at the Shrine and Silvana, both wonderful venues by the way - but please support the musicians when they pass the hat!

TICKET GIVEAWAY - for another drum-related show!

Speaking of drumming: We have two pairs of tickets available to see the potent Turkish / Middle-Eastern inspired percussion-driven ensemble, Raquy Danziger & DÜM, Friday February 12th at 8:30 pm at the Theatre at Brooklyn Music School, 126 St. Felix Street (off Flatbush Ave). Featuring special guests: Uzbeki frame drummer extraordinaire Abbos Kosimov and dancer Dalia Carella.

Raquy Danziger specializes in Turkish Split Hand darbuka drumming, a fairly new style - similar to Indian Tabla technique - that gives Turkish drummers increased speed and dexterity. In addition to lots of pure percussion pieces, DÜM also features Raquy on the spike fiddle, kemenche.

To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets, email me, Rob W, here. Please give your name as it appears on your drivers' license or other photo ID, and please put "TIX" in the subject line. Note that ticket winners may be added to the show's email list but may opt out at any time. The deadline to enter is Sunday, February 7th at 11:59 pm. Winners will be notified on Monday, February 8th, 2016.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- always wondered how literal Seu Jorge's versions of the Bowie were. They are wonderful. If Bowie's attitudes were Extraterrestrial - they were certainly International.
