Had that last track on low volume while I did some stuff. Finally noticed it was great and turned it up just as it ended. Holy Crap. Yo La Tengo is pretty good!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am

they've always had improvised jams, and were always good; but always basic git, bass, drums, feedback....sometimes organ. i've never heard them get dark-droney like that.

I'm less acquainted with YLT than I probably should be. That LP side sounded pretty darned good though.

Alejandroool:

this Steve Warner is oddly energizing
  12:40am
Nick Name:

That 12" is split with Bardo Pond, when i listened to it earlier this week i thought maybe they had put the labels on the wrong side?
  12:43am
Jeff:

Sun Ra was one of the most eccentric geniuses to ever live.....and I suppose he still lives on. Fantastic show thus far Nick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am
coelacanth:

i'm not nearly as familiar with bardo pond (though i like everything i've heard)...but my un-expert opinion says that track could be either one of them.
Avatar 12:45am
Alejandroool:

sounds like the organ is having a hard time cutting through that tree
  12:45am
Jeff:

R2D2 on acid.
Avatar 12:45am
crateslinger:

YLT is like the FMU band right? I mean except for the Beatles...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am
coelacanth:

...but there are other artists that i'd think of first if you played that without saying who it is.
Avatar 12:46am
crateslinger:

Then there's Bevis Frond... another band smart people listen to I know nothing about.
  12:47am
rw:

It's always nice when R2D2 gets into the acid.
Avatar 12:48am
crateslinger:

I saw a Bevis Frond t-shirt on the subway once. The guy looked like he had a great job, but didn't have to dress up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am
coelacanth:

'slinger - YLT plays the fundraisers. they take requests for any song from pledgers on the final night. one member has djed but i'm pretty sure that came well after the band was formed.
Avatar 12:55am
crateslinger:

I know they support the station big time, have been around for a million years, have a million albums. No idea where they're from or anything else. They're like The Fall to me. I like them when I hear them but I just don't have the time to investigate.
.
Avatar 12:56am
crateslinger:

ps - I know they're nothing like the fall, except maybe some crazy dude is the boss.
Avatar 12:57am
Alejandroool:

slinger.. There's so much. I'm sure you could start many places but "I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One" from 1997 had an impact on me, personally, FWIW
Avatar 12:59am
crateslinger:

I been meaning to do the research. So many things.
Avatar 1:01am
crateslinger:

Not usually up this late. Great show. Another one to put on my list of archives. Great Name too, Nick! Shoulda been a punk rock lead singer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am
coelacanth:

i can relate regarding the fall. my lack of great interest in the fall is because to me it all sounds too similar, like rap. yo la tengo is all over the map, stylistically.
i feel (or felt, until <an hour ago) that i had a good variety of their music, with 6-7 albums.
i don't love everything they do but at least like most of it.
Avatar 1:03am
Alejandroool:

def. a wise move, crateslinger
Avatar 1:04am
crateslinger:

yeah. The Fall. Heard it 25 years ago. YLT is all over the map. Like Ween, but not for frat parties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05am
coelacanth:

haha! yeah! -but they're not quite as all over the map as ween!
Avatar 1:07am
crateslinger:

is bevis frond worth a listen?
Avatar 1:09am
ausmanx:

good evening all. you know, you could say Beethoven all sounds pretty similar too. depends how carefully you want to to listen. i get people don't want to take the trouble with The Fall (esp as Smith is so unpleasant) but at least with them it's always worth the effort for those who DO choose..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am
coelacanth:

i think i confuse bardo pond and bevis frond!
(but i think i've gold-starred both on wfmu playlists)
Avatar 1:12am
crateslinger:

The Fall is punk. Props. Always a good song too. Yo La Tengo, Bevis Frond, and Bardo Pond. Homework. In that order. Never did homework before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am
coelacanth:

greetings ausmanx!
- i did like the fall enough to have bought 2 albums- a few years apart in release dates. i always like them, at least a little, but i never hear anything that compels me to get another album. i notice the changes, but they're subtle. (unless there's a whole other side to them that wfmu never plays)
Avatar 1:18am
crateslinger:

I suspect Bevis Frond sucks. Nobody's said anything. And I asked like twice.
Avatar 1:18am
ausmanx:

hi cc. i tend to like eras with The Fall. up to the mid-80s, all is wonderful. the 90s was a bit of a lost decade. then they seemed to find themselves with the millennium. but the last few have dropped off again for me...
Avatar 1:18am
Alejandroool:

hah - unfamiliar with Bevis Frond nor The Fall over 'ere...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am
coelacanth:

...i guess it's because his singing style has never changed. and he rarely sings any melody,(well, pretty much never) so there's not much else to vary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am
coelacanth:

i do- with a definitely smaller knowledge of them, agree about the eras. i like the first album(?) a lot; and about 10 years ago there was some wfmu airplay of new stuff that excited me.
Avatar 1:23am
crateslinger:

Alejandrool - you should definitely check out the Fall's youtube hits if nothing else. It's a cultural necessity. Like Billy Bragg.
Avatar 1:24am
Alejandroool:

gotcha thx. on that note I'll always treasure B.Bragg...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
coelacanth:

i was wrong, of course. "perverted by language" is the oldest one i have. it's very good.
Avatar 1:26am
crateslinger:

yeahword
  1:33am
rw:

This Urban Sax sounds like Fred Frith.
Avatar 1:34am
ausmanx:

Perverted is wonderful, as is all before it; the poppier stuff with Brix is fine too; and i think Are You Are Missing Winner was the start of a great run of albums through the noughties...
  1:38am
Nick Name:

hi ausmanx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am

i'll check out some of that era. i may've somehow heard none of it- or a little, but not knowing when it's from.

BTW- Brian Turner is going to be writing liner notes for about 6 Fall re-issues, not exactly sure when they are out.
Avatar 1:44am

i think the number of Fall reissues almost matches the number of band members by now... hi, Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am

that's cool. he's definitely up to the task.
