Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Bukharian music - music of Jews from predominately Muslim countries of Central Asia - is a fascinating blend of Middle Eastern modal traditions with Jewish and Western influences. We'll learn all about it and hear lots of the music tonight with New School Prof, Ethnomusicologist, and musician Evan Rapport, author of Greeted with Smiles: Bukharian Jewish Music and Musicians in New York (Oxford University Press, 2014).

Pictured above: New York based Bukharian musician Roshel Rubinov.

Tickets available for each of these two shows:

Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street: The World Music Institute Presents: Joaquin Grilo: Dedicated to Paco De Lucia. 8 pm. Info: http://www.worldmusicinstitute.org/.
Joaquin Grilo dedicates this intensely personal evening to his teacher, colleague, and friend, guitarist Paco de Lucía, with whom he toured for many years and who left an indelible impact on his artistic career. This joyful production is Grilo’s vision of modern flamenco, born out of his deep respect for the art form, which weaves together complex music and dance to celebrate the spontaneous nature of flamenco. Guitar, vocals, palmas, and dance center on the soleá and bulerías, set against a backdrop comprised of the simplest elements in order to highlight the dance. The music is inspired by the rhythms of the styles of flamenco being performed, uniting the production in a current of energy and emotion.

Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker St: Marc Ribot's Los Cubanos Postizos. 7:30 pm. Info: http://lpr.com/.
One of the ultimate New York City party bands, Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos (aka “The Prosthetic Cubans”) became a must-see attraction in the late 1990s, with its feverishly cooking shows built around arrangements of Cuban bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez – innovator of the son montuno, and two critically acclaimed albums released on Atlantic Records. Reformed by popular demand with the addition of Cuban’s own Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez on drums and original members Anthony Coleman (keys), Brad Jones (bass) and EJ Rodriquez (perc), 2011 had the band once again in front of ecstatic audiences from such stages as the Montreal Jazz Festival, Fuji Rock Festival and Ellnora Guitar Festival at the Krannert Center of Performing Arts.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Uncle Michael:

FYI, the stream lost the left channel during Todd's show and it's still out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I got both L & R - but the Balance may be to the R ?
  6:07pm Cliff:

I'm also getting sound mostly out of the right speaker on the internet stream
  6:08pm Cliff:

And, hi Rob! Looks like it'll be a cool show today! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Rob W:

Thanks everyone. I'm playing out of our insert channel and the balance is off - I'm fudging it now, should be better...
  6:12pm Cliff:

Looking forward to the Bukharian music, never heard of it before

(Rob, have Ken or Meghan clued you in about Olga, the Siberian Jew's harp goddess?)
Avatar 6:18pm Jeff:

The stereo stream still seems to be right-channel-only. Ken knows, I know... we're trying to track it down. FM seems to be getting both channels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - is it R channel in both channels? IDK...
Avatar 6:24pm Jeff:

RR, which stream are you listening to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

iTunes 128k
Avatar 6:28pm Jeff:

That's... interesting. Because I'm hearing right-only from this primary stream:

stream0.wfmu.org...

...and indeed I'm only seeing the right-channel meter active on the primary streaming computer.
  6:29pm Tyler:

Learned my lesson. Always check the playlist before you re-configure your speakers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...well - if I'm only getting 1/2 the mix - it's still great!...
  6:46pm Cliff:

This is why I always play the WFMU stream through my laptop's speakers, they have these problems crop up occasionally and it's much less annoying if you're not listening through headphones when it happens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it really isn't bad: wonder if I'm getting full Mono ? But enuff from me...
  6:53pm Steve-O:

Hi guys. I'm not hearing anything at all at the moment.....and my speakers are working fine. What's the issue?
  6:54pm Steve-O:

Also, my stream is 32k MP3, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rob W:

I just checked - we're definitely streaming...
  6:56pm Steve-O:

@Rob W: Got it back! Thanks Rob. =)
  6:58pm b k:

My left channel has been out all show on the 128k stream and still is.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Bas NL:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm melinda:

Good evening!
Avatar 7:26pm Jeff:

So do all stereo stream listeners have two channels again? I believe it's fixed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Zats, I so often forget what country has Tashkent and then I check the web and find it's Uzbekistan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Rob W:

My bad, I should have mentioned the country!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

No worries, Rob. My search led me to pictures of that beautiful city. Looks like a wonderful place to visit.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Bas NL:
