Sorry for your loss Doug. Dementia is a cruel way to finish a long life. It has hit both my mother and mother-in-law. May the music help see you through!

That's rough, Doug. My mother isn't to the point of having to be reminded of my father's passing, but I'm sure she privately forgets and then remembers. Assisted living is a current family debate. Right now, two of my sister's are shouldering the majority of the burden. Such a complex issue, emotionally, financially, etc.
Thanks for sharing your story...it helps to hear.

I have some experience having a loved one with dementia. My mother-in-law for the last decade of her life was in a fog. But it was a gentle fog. And she wasn't my mother. My dad's dementia careens from peaceful to terribly fearful. He is often quite aware of his memory loss, and it is so cruel.

Cruel is the right word. My mother's not even 70 and already showing signs. We have a long way to go, and it will not get better/easier, I'm sure.

My mom passed 2 years ago with after a long bout with dementia. In some (like my mom), it does make them into a version of themselves, not the version you grew up with, often an unpleasant version, and it can be quite difficult to manage. Takes a toll on the family as well.

It really helps me to hear of everyone's experiences with death and life. It is so easy to just burrow deep into the solitary sadness. I appreciate the rope ladder, everyone.

in a perverse way, i feel fortunate to not have had either of my parents go through such a rough decline. each one went unexpectedly. (especially my father). i can only imagine the stress and heartache you guys went/are going through.

There is no better or worse "way" I am quite sure. At least I still get to tell my dad I love him about 450 times a day.

Not being able to focus on recent grief or loss, this I get. Three weeks after my mother died, my dad needed emergency surgery and was in the hospital for a week, with some home care needed after that. I'm assuming I breathed sometime during that period, but no clear memory remains.
