Right on! I love WFMU because it has stuff you can't get anywhere else, even though many of the shows aren't exactly my taste. I just sleep easier knowing there is a WFMU out there.

Van Kaye. Excellent. Grandaughter of the late Danny Kaye. Now that was a kooky fellow. I recall one summer I was doing the third leg of Gary Crosby's tour in support of his "Now" LP. This must have been about 1959, maybe 1960. We were in Pembina, North Dakota, which today has been fracked barren, but at that time it was a lively truck-stop town and home to the first electric can opener. but that's another story. Anyway, we're onstage at the Elk's Club and Gary's got them going with his bird calls and jokes. He tried to sing as little as possible because that's where he got into trouble. He was no Bing, let's face it. Anyway ... Gary's imitating a Red-Winged Blackbird when out onto the stage bounds Danny Kaye. The crowd recognized him right away and they erupted into hoots and hollers of joy at the recognition of one of the bigger stars of the day. Gary didn't like it one bit, being upstaged, so he shoves Kaye back a few steps and the crowd boos, at which point Gary shakes his fist at them and they boo even louder. Kaye gets up and pushes Gary to the ground and the crowd goes wild! THroughout all of this, the band just keeps playing. I was 3rd bone in that group. Despite the unpredictability each night, we had a decent amount of fun and we got our $24-a-week on time and with regularity. A lot of music from that tour was captured on tape and can now be heard on Gary Crosby's recently issued "Then" LP.
