Hey there, Martha!
  12:05pm
bill:

man, why couldn't they have us maple on unplugged
  12:06pm
Martha:

Hi there - how's it going? - going to be a more mellow show today. I think.

Martha twofer this week, alright.

great segue from Chris M to your show Martha
  12:10pm
P-90:

Hi Martha. Chris M. announced you'd be doing a special tribute to the classic American musical comedy "The Music Man" today. Can't wait, I'm texting all my friends to tune in too.
  12:11pm
Dean:

One of the questions on my qualifying exams for a doctorate in musicology was, "How many trombones were there in the big parade?"
  12:12pm
Martha:

That Chris M., such a joker - don't hold your breath for "Music Man" - and thanks for the good words!
  12:12pm

We got trouble, right here in Jersey City.

Hello Martha, great to hear your show, once again.
I like this Księżyc. I'm going to check that link out right now! Thanks Soup.

And congratulations again @Martha on your roof-raising vocal rendition of Nona Hendryx's "Keep it Confidential" at the Sinfonia on Sunday night!

Might get less mellow for a bit -
Avatar 12:18pm

Blee: I posted my own sampler of this kind of music on my blog; I can contact you and send you the link if you'd like
  12:19pm
Dean:

@bill: I took the question and ran with it. Because the trombones were leading the big parade, they were effectively operating in a liminal state, both inside and outside the parade. And the reach of a slide allows a trombone to straddle borders, upsetting received norms of propriety respecting Sousa's most challenging works.
  12:20pm
Martha:

@P-90: I love that Nona Hendryx record - "B-Boys" etc.

  12:23pm

@Dean: that sounds very academic and post-modern deconstructivist, but I think you'll find when Martha gets to The Music Man that the final answer is: 76.

The Britten piece is not sacred. The new disk is Eicher's selection: " In this special double album, issued on Pärt’s birthday, Eicher revisits episodes from their shared musical quest, evoking fresh associations from juxtapositions of pieces in his dramaturgical sequence, as we are invited to hear the music anew."

Would be great to hear one of Britten's vocal works, e.g., "Serenade." Or the gorgeous orchestral Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, too.
  12:51pm
Martha:

Thanks for the info! - though I would consider a cantus in memorium to be considered at least spiritual in Nature. I love Britten but was not coordinated enough to arrange a follow-up -

Avatar 12:54pm
soup and fog:

Is this music or communication, and is there a meaningful difference between the two? : )
  12:54pm
Dean:

Arguably, all music is spiritual in nature, at least for me. But Pärt often bases his works on religious texts or themes. Not here.

@sphere: The Hilliard traversal of the Tenebrae? Is that a timeless record or what?

Call me an uptight old humbug if you will, but I simply could never stand Axl's singing voice. Never got used to it, it always sounds like a parody of a teenager in a garage band trying to sing like Robert Plant, and going horribly wrong...

P-90:

I paradoxically agree that "Apetite" is a classic. Somehow I can get past the vocals to enjoy it. But I've seen G&R live in their heyday and everything, and just never warmed up to Axl. His stage persona was uber-obnoxious too, which didn't help.

  2:42pm
Martha:

The thing w/ Appetite for me was that it was such a breath of fresh air - true nasty hard rock (not metal as they always get called) just destroying any hair metal pretenses- and then you get Public Enemy's "Takes a Nation.." and NWA, etc.following - they all brought an edge back to popular music that I (at least) had been missing for so long [and no, I'm not going to get into the 'Nirvana thing' of that same period]
  2:43pm
Martha:

Oh - and that double live record rocks - just don't listen to the crap songs -
Avatar 2:45pm
sphere:

there's some really good rock on Appetite. For example. "Mr. Brownstone" uses the Bo Diddley beat to great effect.
  2:45pm
Polyus:

Agreed on the context of Appetite's release, Martha.
Avatar 2:45pm
just dc pat:

I dunno..I was deep into all the groups on SST when GnR came out and just thought, "Huh? Why?" But anyway, great show Martha.
  2:47pm
Polyus:

It seems to me that GNR were just as much responsible for hair metal's demise as grunge.
  2:48pm
Dean:

At the time I was largely bored with rock, listening mostly to medieval dance and vocal music. But when Appetite came out, and later Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking, I thought, "Hmmm, that'll do!"

OTOH, I HATE EVERYTHING TO DO WITH NIRVANA.
Avatar 2:51pm
just dc pat:

ah, now there's the rub. I'm not a huge Nirvana fan but like Bleach a lot. They were in the mix back then. To me there's no such thing as "grunge" just as there's no such thing as "hipsters." BUT I DIGRESS. Nirvana were another punk group to us.
Avatar 2:51pm
sphere:

I see nothing wrong with Nirvana. But, IMHO, grunge did lead to Pearl Jam and the Gin Blossoms. It has a lot to answer for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Nice sharing the time together today. Martha. Have a happy Easter and such.
  2:53pm
Martha:

Thanks all - I know folks have diff opinions on many things, esp. GnR [don't worry, not going to play anything] - and excellent point about the Bo Diddley beat on Mr. Brownstone. I guess I was immersed also in mainstream music at the time - there wasn't such a huge divide. In a sense, although popular w/in their scenes, GnR, PE & NWA, Nirvana were all "underground" in the sense that they came from genres which weren't part of "mainstream music" - some of them got no radio play, some took a long time to break, some were instant hits - but they were novel to a large portion of the public -
  2:54pm
Dean:

One thing I don't hate about Nirvana: Pat Smear. I guess I'm kinda puzzled he had anything to do with them, but not entirely so.
  2:55pm
Dean:

Accordingly:

I HATE EVERYTHING, EXCEPT FOR PAT SMEAR, TO DO WITH NIRVANA.
