In 1986 no google, so finding out about bands was mostly done by reading the Village Voice and going to record stores and record shows in my experience. NOW you can instantly get information and increase your collection goals exponentially. Thank GOD for FMU on the net. In 1986 I was all about the vinyl albums. Used CDs were not a commodity at this point. In 1996 when I got to Las Cruces NM used CDs were very easy to get. Anybody have any idea when cheap used CDs of bands you would actually want start becoming available?

@Cecile-Back in 1996 or so there was a chain of music stores in NM that had a HUGE used CD section (VERY chaotic and unorganized) called Hastings. They had used CDs a-plenty. I just remembered. Spirit Winds in Las Cruces (also a Café and Gift Shop) had a great "college" selection of hand-picked CDs.

There were a couple bad years during the second or third century B.C. For example, this performance of a tune from Papyrus Wien 2982 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oCCpKLGZTw) isn't exactly American Bandstand material. But the album on which it appears is otherwise really good.

Tongue was firmly planted in cheek, bill, when I poo-poo'd the papyrus. Something tells me almost nothing would be out of place at FMU, except maybe Tchaikovsky? Telemann? Villa-Lobos (about whom Stravinsky reportedly said, "Why is it that whenever I hear a piece of music I don't like, it's always by Villa Lobos?").

  11:33am
Polyus:

I guess the cough drops kinda have that effect, yes.
  11:33am
Dean:

The piano trio? No love?

I love Telemann because he wrote SO FRICKIN' MUCH, much of it tedious. His music seems to have been composed as a distraction, while he was paying bills or something. The beauty of Telemann's music is that it is exquisitely generic. I even have an LP of random chamber music of his. The cover is a painting by Degas. What?!

Subject me to Elgar, please.

Andrew Waterloo:

There's a nice live recording of Flipper on Youtube that features the bassist having to replace a broken bass with that of GPO from Throbbing Gristle.

I have a friend from Bermuda. I should play it for him sometime.

ryab, yeah, there was! Even with me not liking a lot of stuff, I still managed to spend a ton of money on records.

Im pretty sure that Camper Van Beethoven only had two albums out at the time. I was living in New York and my only exposure to their music was though FMU and two shows. One at Folk City, and one at CBGB's. Im sure this was '85 '86. Thanks for the memories!
