Sorry to hear the family nx, Doug S. On the subject of things getting old & failing in Squirrel Hill, I see where they had to take down the Beechwood Blvd. Br. Uncle Eddie lived on Beechwood Blvd., though not that part of it. Beechwood Blvd.'s one of those streets where if you stretched it out straight would go halfway around the world, but from end to end it's only a short way.

  9:22am Listener Robert:

I'll explain to the others that the bridge, which was west of Squirrel Hill at one spaghetti-end of Beechwood Blvd., had to be taken down 3 mos. ago (though I just got word) because it was about to come down by itself. It ran over a ravine that the Penn-Lincoln Pkwy. later was built thru.
  9:25am Listener Robert:

It's been many yrs. since I've been to that area. What put me in mind of it was reading about 1 politician in McKeesport, another in Bridgeville, who were each disqualified from office because of old drug convictions & an obscure provision of the Pa. constitution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

They had to build a second bridge under the old bridge just to catch the falling pieces. Both were dynamited to pieces back in December.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Thought you'd dig it, ndbob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

I can also explain for the benefit of listeners worldwide that Pittsburgh's topography comes in part from sitting in a karst belt that runs along the W edge of the Alleghennies from roughly Montreal to roughly Cincinnati. How was it getting used to the taste of Pittsburgh water, Doug?

  9:34am Listener Robert:

The ground being relatively easy to erode by water, the rivers of past & present cut deep channels, which is why on the S side of the Monongahela you go straight from bridges to tunnels.

I am appreciative of the sounds and the science this morning. Hi, Doug. Hello, fellow listeners.
  9:48am Listener Robert:

UM or anyone, if you ever want to experience the worst ground water of that belt, it's probably in Weedsport NY. It curdles coffee, makes soap nearly unusable, but as a bonus requires less paste to set up & you don't need eggs w breakfast because you can smell them in the water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

holland "tunnel" oats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
The Pittsburgh drinking water is putrid. Not Flint putrid, but still upsetting.
  9:54am Listener Robert:

But if you drink it for a while, Doug S, you adapt to it. Last time you came east for Marathon, did you notice the water tasting bitter the 1st time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Goyim in the AM:

I always have to look around to make sure nobody's judging me when Doug plays La Lupe. Not that I care, 'cause she's great, but kinda erotic for Germanic afternoons.
  9:57am El Thatchmo:

DJ Jack Acid in The Hizzie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

It's true you get used to it, which is the scary thing. NYC water is the best big city drinking water there is.

@Goyim in the AM
La Lupe was too erotic for Cuba and she had to leave the island. Later she was too erotic for herself. She became a devout 7th Day Adventist (I think) and renounced her entire performing career.

The man, the legend, EL THATCHMO!
  9:57am Listener Robert:

Part of the effect in Pitts. & thereabouts is manmade, a result of mining. Supposedly the high manganese in the water there is from mine erosion. A deeper layer of water that's not so "hard" (& therefore more acid) hits exposed metals & oxidizes them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Okay, Listener Robert, you are getting close to TMI territory!
Avatar 10:01am glenn:

well, one good thing about flint - the republicans won't be elected there for the foreseeable future, with the added bonus that rick snyder might actually face criminal charges.
  10:01am Listener Robert:

Yet NYC's water comes a short distance from other waters that are of quality similar to Weedsport's. The ground being very folded & with lots of intrusions, it varies a lot in a short distance; that effect is seen all the way S & E to Rockland Co. & far northern NJ. So NYC's engrs. must've sampled & taken the good stuff from that far away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Did you read about the Iranian National Guard's attempt to hack that small dam sluice in upstate New York? Their effort only failed because the dam was offline for repairs. Scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Uncle Michael:

We cook with, drink and make ice with water from a household reverse osmosis system. We have softened water for everything else...except for watering plants. We have straight city water for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

That dam hack story was freeky.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:04am Brian in UK:

Doug, the old font was much easier on the eyes than your recent missives.
  10:05am Listener Robert:

One of the interesting details from "Gangs of NY" was the shot of the anti-cholera truck spraying some worthless spray in the streets. Illness from the local water (lack of separation between sewage & source) went away when the Croton Aqueduct was built, tapping a source at a great distance, while leaving sewage rx to future generations.
Avatar 10:07am ndbob:

@glenn atlas obscura is such a great site
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

The Carole King song isn't doing the word "jazzman" any favors, either.

  10:15am Listener Robert:

Thanks, Doug S, I'd heard about the dam story, but hadn't looked up which one it was, afraid it was a big one. Not too long after 9/11/01 I drove to the edge of Kensico Reservoir at night to see an expected aurora; I wanted dark sky to the N. Shortly after I parked, a policeman shooed me, explaining that parking was prohibited due to the threat of terrorism. I hadn't thought much about the vulnerability of the water supply & control until then.

@doctorjazz aha that's strange - I hadn't thought about Jonatha Brooke for years - until a few minutes before you posted that link
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

LISTENER WARNING:
The next set will contain a song titled "Just Another Seaweed."

Just want to prepare you now in case you have any "triggers."
Avatar 11:25am ndbob:

no seaweed triggers - only flashing GIFS:)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:26am Brian in UK:

Doug, I have several of those favourites. Thank you.

More kelp?

Let's hear it for Timbales the cat.
Avatar 11:27am Carmichael:

Toonces the drumming cat.

Happy April Day, music fools!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Uncle Michael:

LISTENER WARNING:
The next show will be Hinky Dinky Time at the top of the hour. Your triggers are your own damned problem.

K Blau has a pretty healthy bandcamp presence: klaps.bandcamp.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Goyim in the AM:

Do Roy Rogers films come with a Trigger warning?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:33am doctorjazz:

That's a lot of Blau...any recommendations for a starter disc?
  11:33am Listener Gregory:

Etiquette question. When referring to an album by "Dollar Brand," should we refer to him by that name or as Abdullah Ibrahim?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:34am Brian in UK:

Depends what is states on the sleeve. You can only be who you are at the time.
Avatar 11:34am glenn:

roy rogers films come with a saccharine warning.
  11:35am Listener Gregory:

@Brian in UK. Is the time today?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:35am Brian in UK:

Is = it.
  11:35am Mr C:

Played this when it came out- a lot. House of Orange had a great label deign.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Uncle Michael:

Cassius Clay and Bruce Jenner competed in the Olympics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I use the name that the artist used at the time of the recording. Not sure if that's the best approach, but it feels right to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

In my mind he is Dollar Brand through the mid-1970s, then Abdullah Ibrahim thereafter.
  11:36am Listener Gregory:

@Uncle Michael: Which one won??
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:37am Brian in UK:

@LG never sure who I am anyway. An existential listener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Uncle Michael:

It was a draw...but it was nip and tuck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
I doubt any of that Blau is available. Those records were all homemade for a music subscription list he ran. Very few were ever burned.
  11:38am Listener Gregory:

OK, thanks for the advice. I'm sure that whichever I say, someone will protest outside my office.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Holy moly, I completely missed that Bandcamp link Jeff Golick posted. Wow. Dark Magic Sea is a fave of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Goyim in the AM:

A record is an object in the world, a person is a person -- so, for instance, Wendy Carlos is Wendy Carlos, full stop, but I think you can fairly call "Switched On Bach" as by "Walter/Wendy Carlos".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

And Clothes Your I's. It's is experimental and wonderful and beautiful and bizarre and unique. Karl Blau is sui generis and fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory: anyone who protests your choice of name is, if I may be so bold, completely missing the point.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:41am doctorjazz:

You can buy all 33 Blau recordings at Bandcamp...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Karl Blau was long a member of Laura Veirs' backing band The Tortured Souls.

@Brian in UK
Yes, RIP indeed.

Morning, Lane Gray!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45am Brian in UK:

Must get my grubby mits on this comp.

Hello Lane.
  11:47am Marie:

I always found this song *Glenn Campbell's version) kind of haunting, like, a total earworm, when I was a kid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Jeff Golick:

Blau is new to me. I'm more familiar with the work of his Anacortes, WA, neighbor, Phil Elverum, late of the Microphones/Mount Eerie/et al. Elverum also has a huge bandcamp page: pwelverumandsun.bandcamp.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Uncle Michael:

Willie did what Sammy Davis didn't bother to do.
  11:48am Mr C:

Never heard this by Willie..
  11:49am Marie:

What did Willie do, Uncle Mike?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am Brian in UK:

@Marie, I never want to own GC's version because I get such joy hearing it on the radio randomly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Uncle Michael:

Willie learned the words...or at least read the right ones off paper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

Which comp, Brian, the Fame Studios One? If so, um, email me.

@Jeff Golick
Mount Eerie was, I believe, Tucker Martine's studio! He is Laura Veirs' producer and husband, and the producer of Karl's new record.

I snuck one past Mr. C! That like sneaking a sunrise pork chop past a rooster wolf!
  11:50am Marie:

@Brian--sounds like a nice approach
@ UM--hee hee hee
  11:51am Listener Robert:

Dean, in England they go straight from July 3 to July 5 just to dis Americans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Uncle Michael will be passing out party favors (let's hope he doesn't pass out!) at this afternoon's listening party. It will be a Hinky Dinky Great Time here on the Drummer Stream, coming up next: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Lane Gray:

I don't recall Sammy's version. What did he do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Uncle Michael:

Held himself to a low standard, Lane.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:53am Brian in UK:

@LR that has to be the slowest, backdatedist, slack comment EVER and untrue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Uncle Michael:

"If it snows that stretch down south won't ever be the same."

What does that even mean?
  11:54am Mr C:

Johnny Daye was from Pittsburgh I believe..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Uncle Michael:

I don't think Sammy knew or cared what the song was about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

One of the greats, Johnny Daye (née DiBucci). Discovered by Otis Redding! He's from Pittsburgh. Word was that he moved back to town and was selling luxury cars at a BMW dealership.
  11:55am Dean:

We just had a fire alarm. Two Berkeley Fire Dep't trucks. No fooling.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Brian in UK:

@Uncle the line is
Wont ever stand the strain.
  11:55am Marie:

To me, Sammy is a semi-tragic figure but he seems to have been happy (not that I looked into his life and psyche all that closely)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

I love Sammy. I also love Jimmy Webb. Not Sammy's best effort.
  11:56am Marie:

semi-tragic=semi-comedic? :>)
Avatar 11:56am ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

Brian, I was quoting Sammy.
  11:56am Marie:

the human condition?
  11:57am Mr C:

Now there's an inspired metaphor!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:57am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Uncle Michael:

See you all in the next room. Great stuff this morning, Doug. Thanks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:58am Brian in UK:

Doug, thanks for the lesson.
Have a great weekend everyone.
