Oh, the horror.

We; the people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant South
The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Gary:

That Rokia Traoré version was great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Sara Serpa is from Portugal.

Hi there Artie H and Uncle M!
Avatar 6:09pm ndbob:

great idea for this show Doug - and I know it will be great - but I will have to hear it on the archive - I most definitely am no tin a frame of mind where I can listen to it now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

It is absolutely a be-in-the-right-frame-of-mind kind of show, ndbob.
Avatar 6:11pm Jeff:

Oh, man. This is a rough one. Not entirely sure I'm up to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

I hear you, Jeff. Not sure how I will come out, either.
Avatar 6:14pm Jeff:

I mean, it's just listening to a song, not fucking living and dying it, so I feel like a crybaby...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Three men were dragged from that jail in Marion, Indiana on August 7, 1930. But only two were lynched (Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith). The third (James Cameron) was saved by an anonymous woman who claimed he had nothing to do with the crime. A crime that all three were years later exonerated from. Of course.

I get 15 minutes of Tuesday Doug!

I have 4 101 Strings albums, but I don't believe this is on any of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
So that would be 404 strings in total.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Doug Schulkind:

The infamous photo of the Marion, Indiana, lynching that inspired the poem that became this song was used on the cover of Public Enemy's 12" release of Hazy Shade of Criminal: images.rapgenius.com...
Avatar 6:34pm northguineahills:

Haven't heard of this Lester Bowie rendition before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

I still miss Lester desperately.
