Good afternoon Liz and liznerers. I'm going to see People Like Us at last tonight, I'm so psyched!

That sounded more Mongolian than Polish to me, which is high praise from me. But this show demands more focus

Liz, I have your show on in my wine shop. Customers dig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Gosh, not only is there a Chris T. Aerial View episode link on the main page, but also a new Dave Emory For the Record episode. I didn't realize he was still recording. I'm going to have to grow some more ears to listen to all this stuff.

@Dumpcake - I was going to reply, but Liz beat me to it. I'd like to add that there was a steak restaurant in Hopewell Junction, NY, that had a dessert choice called the Dump Cake. The place eventually closed, but might be open with a different name and management now. No idea if they serve dumpcakes there anymore.

There is a restaurant in my town called Tacocat as well. Greasy bike messengers make and deliver your tacos.
Avatar 2:14pm

@Polyus: Hmm, I wonder if that would work for pasties. Pasties and beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Liz Berg:

Tacocat and the pasties and beer combo seem like search engine optimization to me.
Avatar 2:15pm
herb.nyc:

via TACOCAT descrip on bowerypresents.com One of the weirdest things humans do is to classify half of all humans as niche. As though women’s shit isn’t real shit—as though menses and horses and being internet-harassed aren’t as interesting as beer-farts and monster trucks and doing the harassing. That’s why Tacocat is radical: not because a female-driven band is some baffling novelty, but because they’re a group making art about experiences in which gender is both foregrounded and neutralized. This isn’t lady stuff, it’s people stuff. It’s normal. It’s nothing and everything. It’s life.

The four actual best friends—Emily...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

A search of tacocat images on the web will find some adorable Halloween costumes for cats. My daughter wore a taco costume for humans one year.

There's a great 70s disco version of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa Esmeralda, who also did about as Latin disco a cover of House of the Rising Sun as is possible in this universe.

Interesting that "pasty" in a controlled appellation in the UK. On our side of the pond, we run wild with the concept.

Cornish Pasties? One of the things I miss from living in the midwest. That and the really great street Vietnamese food one could score as well. What do we really have in NYC as far as street food goes? Just tons of Halal carts? Feh.

@βrian: Uggh. That sounds vile. One for lunch. The other for dinner. That’s it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm
mariano:

@JakeGould: lots of different types of food carts here in my experience, though there is a lot of mediocre gyro meat over rice type stuff. You can do a search by cuisine here: nyctruckfood.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
mariano:

Sorry, this link seems a bit more comprehensive: roaminghunger.com...
Avatar 2:31pm
βrian:

I dunno. Some of that slightly sweet salty mì căn with chilies, wrapped in a pasty. I'd go there.
  2:32pm
JakeGould:

@mariano: I know there are a few decent alternatives, but they are not commonplace. That’s my gripe. The most common street carts in NYC nowadays are halal carts serving the same old same old or breakfast coffee and pastry carts. If you are lucky enough to work in Manhattan near a decent food cart, that is an exception to the rule.
  2:34pm
JakeGould:

No idea why taco carts aren’t as common as halal carts in NYC.

the best commercial pasties in the UP are at Lowry's in Ishpeming, MI.
The best pasties period are made by my mother-in-law, but I did write down how she made them...Good commercial pasties in the Twin Cities are at Lund's. Only problem is that the meat is ground a little too fine.
Avatar 2:36pm
Cecile:

More Middle Eastern immigrants. Mexican migration to NYC is a newer thing, I'm told.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
mariano:

Depends where you go: Red Hook has lots of taco carts, Jackson Heights too, a couple in Park Slope that I know of, as well as uptown around Morningside Heights, and of course Sunset Park. It's true that the halal carts are more widespread, but it seems like there are more options than even just a couple of years ago.
Avatar 2:37pm
Cecile:

now I want a taco.
  2:38pm
JakeGould:

@mariano: I lived in Boerum Hill for years… Just Halal carts and then one great empanada guy who is still there. But for years. Now I live in Bay Ridge and it’s just tons of Halal carts and absolutely 100% nothing else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
mariano:

Anyway, not to be unduly argumentative: I'm not a big fan of the run-of-the-mill halal carts or the pre-buttered untoasted bagels either!
