I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Listener comments!

Avatar 4/16 3:26am Mayuko:

In Tono, a strange house in the mountain is called a mayoi-ga (a house hound when one loses his way). Translation of Tale #63 Mayoiga, from "Tono Monogatari (The Legends of Tono)": lovetono.exblog.jp...
Avatar 2:59pm fred:

I'm confused by "house hound when one loses his way". Could it be "found" instead of "hound"? Otherwise could you maybe rephrase?
Avatar 4:24pm Mayuko:

oops! that must be typo. it's a house you find when you go into a mountain and lose your way home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm listener james from westwood:

Good Monday, Mayuko, fred, and all!
Avatar 5:01pm fred:

I'm glad I got this right, and even more that folktale language works even in Japanese. I've always been fond of combining Wittgenstein stuff with Pinkola Estes like tales
Avatar 5:05pm fred:

I'm listening live! I'm still on Sonic Protest vacation tomorrow, but the festival is over. Mono headphones, but I'm happy to not have spoilers for a change. Already cliky-starred the first track, and Ikue Mori is a close-to-sure bet
Avatar 5:07pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 5:09pm Mayuko:

Good monday to you too, james! Happy to have you tuned in live again, fred!! and hallo, comrade Flash Strap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Flash!
Avatar 5:10pm Flash Strap:

Hi James and Mayuko wonderful to be here
Avatar 5:11pm fred:

@Flash Strap: I wanted to say Hola back, but that would be awkward. Will you settle for a Pierre-like "Bonjour"?
Avatar 5:13pm fred:

Are you kidding me? I'm listening live and you're playing Kyrgyz music? I did the right thing!
Avatar 5:14pm Flash Strap:

A bonjour will do nicely, Fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Stepchild:

Howdy folks
Avatar 5:15pm fred:

@Flash Strap: Bonjour, then
@Stepchild: welcome
  5:23pm robert:

two weeks in a row now I've remembered to tune-in to the live show, woo \o/

hello folks :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Gary:

Hi there
Avatar 5:27pm fred:

Totally makes sense to me, and I stand corrected as this is actually Kazakh. I like Kazakh music too. Already clicky-starred the whole show. A quake-related performance is particularly appropriate today
  5:32pm ディビッド・リー・ジョーンズ:

Hi, Mayuko chan.. haven't heard your show
in ages..
Avatar 5:35pm Mayuko:

Thank you for tuning in, Stepchild, robert, and david!
& Gary!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Mayuko! This show is a regular Sakura Matsuri!
Avatar 5:40pm Mayuko:

It's hard for me yet to distinguish musics from around that area yet, fred. Glad what I'm doing/saying today is making sense to you.
Avatar 5:40pm Mayuko:

welcome on board, Henry!
Avatar 5:42pm fred:

@Mayuko: It's obviously hard for me too! As long as we're trying and taking interest, I hope we're both learning and doing something good
Avatar 5:45pm Flash Strap:

have to run but i just want to say that this show was the sonic fuel to a reasonably successful collage session and I'm very grateful for it
Avatar 5:46pm fred:

@Flash Strap: Is there a place were the result can be seen?
Avatar 5:50pm Mayuko:

possibly on his website? www.evancrankshaw.com
Avatar 5:51pm Mayuko:

glad I was able to help for a bit, Flash strap!
Avatar 5:52pm Danne D:

Hi Mayuko and everyone :)
Avatar 5:55pm Mayuko:

@fred, I agree, it's simply fascinating to hear all these things but I also think it's a good thing that we all get interested and try learn about others. Music is one of the things that helps doing that the best!
Avatar 5:55pm Mayuko:

ah! Mr Oreo! aren't you at work?!?!
Avatar 5:55pm fred:

I didn't know he had a show on this stream. I guess this is the show when I really show what a fool I am
Avatar 6:06pm fred:

"monastère" just means "monastery", no idea what where monks live is called in Japanese
Avatar 6:10pm Mayuko:

ah! I see. thank you, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Gary:

I'm loving this kind of noisy track
Avatar 6:14pm fred:

@Mayuko: and about "Mr Oreo", one can be at work, actually working, and listening
Avatar 6:15pm fred:

Is that a mono track or did I just go deaf?
Avatar 6:16pm fred:

OK, right ear's getting sound again
Avatar 6:16pm Mayuko:

yah that track was a mono.
Avatar 6:17pm Mayuko:

- a.
Avatar 6:18pm Mayuko:

yes Yximalloo san is pretty great, Gary!
Avatar 6:19pm Danne D:

@Mayuko Packing up from work but tuned in for a little while :D
Not sure that I'll see you at the station tonight - it sounds like Shaina is gonna be on hand so I may not be over there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Gary:

My bluetooth speaker is tough to tell mono from stereo
Avatar 6:19pm Mayuko:

Mr Oreo aka Danne D always excuses and say he can't join my show nor listen because he's at work. but you're right sure one can listen at work! boo!
Avatar 6:20pm Mayuko:

@Danne D oh! no oreo tonight?! I will die from hunger.
Avatar 6:20pm Danne D:

Have a good rest of the show Mayuko :)
I'm usually distracted at work by other craziness though :(
And oftentimes I'm as I am now packing up and heading into the car.

Now I have to give Mayuko extra oreos next time I see her :(
Avatar 6:21pm Danne D:

But I have to sign off for now - I may or may not see later Mayuko - if not sometime soon I'm sure :)

Have a great night everyone :)
Avatar 6:21pm Mayuko:

Oreo cookies n cream ice cream, please. it's getting that kind of weather in NYC! see you next week, Danne D!
Avatar 6:22pm fred:

@Danne D: you should always give Mayuko extra Oreos. How else can you break the Bengals playoff curse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Carmichael:

Hi Mayuko and listeners.
Avatar 6:24pm Mayuko:

welcome, Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Stepchild:

Hey! I know this track! And it's the ONLY thing you've played that I know.. Just one reason why I enjoy your program so much is that's about typical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm rbxbx:

Stepchild: I love that aspect as well! Knowing a few things here and there is nice to keep you feeling like a cool music-knowing person, but exposure to new things is where it's at :)
Avatar 6:33pm Mayuko:

ha, I don't know what other DJs are playing most of the time either, haha. so glad you've enjoyed the stuff I've played, Stepchild!
Avatar 6:33pm Mayuko:

oh and hello rbxbx! welcome on board!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm rbxbx:

Hiya! This is actually just robert still, but I've rebranded and finally created a wfmu account :)
Avatar 6:37pm Mayuko:

Now that I think, there are even some stuff that I don't even know until I play - like that Tohoku ritual music I played earlier today, just found them last week. These traditional music/performances/cultures differ from time to time, region to region within a country, I can never be arrogant enough to say I truly understand them just because I am from the same country. So much to learn!!!
Avatar 6:38pm Mayuko:

ah, so that was you robert! ok, well greeting twice and thrice doesn't hurt. hello!
Avatar 6:41pm fred:

Thanks for sharing the learning opportunities. We lean as you do. That's beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Stepchild:

Flash Strap said something similar the other day Mayuko. Reminded me of a John Cage story of delivering a lecture series where he promised to learn the material each week that his students (California housewives, I think he said!) asked for, then lecture on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm rbxbx:

Didn't Richard Feynman often do the same thing? Learn a subject by having to lecture on it. It's a good trick :)
Avatar 6:44pm geezerette:

Hi Mayuko, echoing Fred and others. Wonderful learning new things, especially fun together.
Avatar 6:44pm fred:

I meant "learn" not "lean", though that works too
Avatar 6:45pm Mayuko:

Flash Strap definitely is an explorer, as his show name explains! I love that John Cage story! and Richard Feynman too? That's so funny.
Avatar 6:46pm fred:

@rbxbx: I'd hate to lecture anyone though, mentoring is more my thing
Avatar 6:47pm Mayuko:

and hallo, thank you for listening, geezerette!!
Avatar 6:50pm Mayuko:

Doing a radio show is better than lecturing/mentoring! AND I get to learn a lot every week AND have fun with all of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm rbxbx:

@fred – fair enough, teaching is the crux of the matter. Come to think of it, I think I prefer mentoring to lecturing as well. Need to find more opportunities to do so :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm rbxbx:

I haven't heard Flash Strap's show yet. Will have to make it a point to do so. Sounds great.
Avatar 6:53pm fred:

@rbxbx: I wasn't expressing a value judgment, just a personal flaw: I suck at lecturing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm listener james from westwood:

There was a "Simpsons" where Marge offers to give piano lessons to earn the family a bit more dough. Either Bart or Lisa says, "Mom, you don't know how to play the piano!"
In one of my favorite lines in the series, Marge optimistically replies, "I just have to stay one lesson ahead of the kid!"
Avatar 6:56pm geezerette:

Zazen Boys, what a great and funny band name!
Avatar 6:56pm Mayuko:

天狗 is a kind of supernatural being that appears often in Japanese folklore... and this is my last song today. thank you all for listening! stay tuned for Kim! wfmu.org...
Avatar 6:57pm geezerette:

Avatar 6:57pm fred:

@LJFW: that exactly how university professors in France handle it, until they can publish a book (with answers to exams)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm rbxbx:

Thanks Mayuko! It was fun (and educational) as usual. Nice chatting with you all. Have a lovely evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Gary:

Thanks for the terrific show, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm listener james from westwood:

Always a pleasure, Mayuko! Thanks!
Avatar 7:02pm Mayuko:

Have a beautiful week to you all, thank you for listening! See you next week.
Avatar 7:03pm fred:

Mayuko, thanks so much for this show that I could enjoy live for a change. I'll be sent back to the archives next week, I'm so glad there are there
Avatar 7:06pm Mayuko:

It's always a pleasure to have you tuned in live or unlive, fred!
  10:33pm zzmz:

遠野 is a beautiful place, quite convincing there would be many ephemeral folk tales told.
Avatar 12:38am Mayuko:

So you have been there too, zzmz?! That's really great!! I was there in May... so green and wisteria was in full bloom everywhere... it was indeed so beautiful.
  4:51pm zzzmm:

Speaking of 遠野 and 民謡ベストコレクション4 岩手編 you played it while back I thought you had relatives in IWATE.
Avatar 5:55pm Mayuko:

My real grandfather was supposedly from Aomori, I never met him and I don't know any of his relatives, but maybe it's his genes in me that gets me attracted to Tohoku region, haha. The first CD I ever bought when I was in 3rd grade was the soundtrack of "Night on the Galactic Railroad" for the story written by Kenji Miyazawa who was from Iwate, so that's what originally got me interested in Iwate.
  9:50pm mzmz:

I'm not much of fan of 宮沢 賢治 although only read his well-known stuff. Did you know? he's very hot in west these days. btw I also got 民謡ベストコレクション4 岩手編 too. Love it every track.
Avatar 8:02pm Mayuko:

Not a huge fan of the most famous poem of his either, but there are many less known poems and short stories I love. and he's got a unique, almost awkward (or maybe rugged is the word) rhythm of his own in the way he writes which is kind of addictive. That kind of thing must be hard to get translated... but I'm very curious to know how he has been received in the west!
  11:01pm MAlloo:

Thank you very much! Google seach couldn't show it.
