Corinna Škėma Snyder on Macedonian Music

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Anthropologist, singer and musician Corinna Snyder joins us for a look at the rich musical traditions of the Republic of Macedonia. She'll share field recordings from her musical travels in Macedonia as well as other commercial and field recordings.

Corinna is also chairs the board of the East European Folklife Center (EEFC), which promotes East European music and dance in North American and holds annual summer camps / workshops on the east and west coasts. And she’s a member of two Macedonian-style groups: Glas and Odglasi - we’ll sample a couple of new demos by Glas.

We’ll also spotlight Macedonia's iconic Romani singer Esma Redžepova, who is on tour in the U.S through April 30th including stops in our area at Saints Kyril and Metodij Macedonian Orthodox Church, Cedar Grove NJ today (Saturday April 23rd), and in NYC Sunday night (April 24th) at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker St.

Help the Veles Chalgija Musicians (pictured above from Corinna’s recent visit): You can support a GoFundMe campaign for Šukri's family's medical expenses: http://www.gofundme.com/2wekvtrg
From the GoFundMe page:
Šukri Aliev is one of the last of his kind: a virtuostic clarinet master of Veleš-style čalgija. This unique and soulful Ottoman-influenced music has almost disappeared, and Šukri and his colleagues Taso, Demir and Mačev struggle to survive as musicians in a city that has fallen on very hard financial times. Šukri's wife is now seriously ill and Šukri can't pay for her medical care. I've created this GoFundMe site to help raise funds for him and his family. Anything you can contribute will help. He is not only a beautiful musician, he is a warm and generous human being. Please help me help him. No gift is too small.

  8:49pm mink:

Ah bless you Coel. But you can have a folkie rave at home too. Sometimes the kitchen party folk rave is the best :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm coelacanth:

...balkan dancing and cider! -it just sounds amazing!
  8:57pm mink:

Jeez, does anyone know what kumon is? I just googled it. It this weird learning class I got sent to.... it almost looks religious...
  8:58pm mink:

yea I can't do big festivals any more.. I want to see the stage! But smaller festivals are good.

Thanks for listening and thanks to Rob for inviting me. Re the Breezy Hill Wassail, truly no one will be turned away for lack of funds, so don't let that hold you back!
Swag For Life Member 10:13pm corinna:

and re the drinking - the clarinet, violin and ud player are muslim and drinking soft drinks. the dajre player is orthodox and he was having a touch of rakija, "for the voice."
