Tina Turner. Hadn't thought of her in a while. We had a chance meeting back circa '68 when I was playing English Horn with Blodwyn Pig (short-lived gig). This would have been in South Carolina - a truck stop called South Of The Border. I was smoking a Tareyton by the big statue of Pedro which beckons motorists off the freeway. Suddenly, three young women in mini-skirts walked over and asked if they might have a cigarette. I was glad to oblige. They told me they were on the road with Ike and Tina Turner, whom of course I had heard of. Moments later, Tina Turner herself walked over and asked to have a cigarette. Unfortunately, I didn't have any left. She seemed annoyed. This was when a man (evidently, Ike) came around Pedro's southeast haunch and yelled at them all - "Get back on the damned bus!" Well, they all skidaddled out of there and onto there bus. Ike asked me for a cigarette and I told him I was out. He was irritated by this fact and he glared at me for a solid five seconds before he turned and walked away. An odd encounter, but one I'm glad I had in looking back.
