Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm sphere:

hey Ira! nice hearing you again.
  3:05pm MONEYBAG$:

Good afternoon Ira
  3:06pm bobsmart567:

Great show in Portsmouth last month!
Avatar 3:08pm mark r:

Digging the sounds, Ira. I thought this Ten Year's After track was something from the 50s or something--very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm mariano:

Damn, missed K-Doe! Oh well... hi everyone, Ira!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Cliff:

Hello Ira & everyone
  3:09pm MONEYBAG$:

I have this album somewhere...bought it for the cover
  3:09pm bobsmart567:

Calm down, Alvin. (ha)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm melinda:

hi Ira & folks!
Avatar 3:10pm Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Ira, and all. Alvin and the lads, eh? Boy, been a while.
Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Ira:

For you and me, both, Sem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm sphere:

Ten Years After as an organ jazz trio? who knew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello all. IRA for IRWIN Swap going swimmingly well! GO ALVIN!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm mariano:

Reminds me of that Sabbath track from Live at Last, the jazzy break they put in the middle of Wicked World.
Avatar 3:18pm markreichard:

I like the Texas Instruments track, too. It has sort of a Television-y vibe for me, instumentally. Anybody else hear that?
  3:20pm bobsmart567:

Nice snare on that Texas Instruments!
Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Ira:

Hmm, a little off center, this 45.
Avatar 3:27pm Sem Chumbo:

Varetta and the Thomases and then Millie. Be still, my heart.
I'm coming to join ya, Elizabeth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Just tuned in. Nice to hear you on the air, Ira the K.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm mariano:

Wow, what a perfect way to go, sad as it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm mariano:

Who else died on stage? The guy from Morphine, but who else?
  3:39pm Ernst:

That's actually really interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Parq:

Mariano, right off the top of my head, the guitarist from Stone the Crows was electrocuted on stage by an improperly grounded guitar.
  3:45pm Fredericks:

The Q sounds just fine, Ira. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Parq:

Update, it was a mike, not a guitar. The guy was Les Harvey, whose brother was the Sensational Alex Harvey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey there, Ira and Iranians.

@mariano - The singer for The Beat Farmers, Country Dick Montana, died on stage. Would you count Dimebag Darrel as well?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm mariano:

Thanks for the info, @Parq & @Ken -- personally I'd count Dimebag, poor guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm melinda:

This Mama Na Mwana is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Parq:

Jeez, I didn't know about the Dimebag Darrell case. Rough.
Avatar 4:00pm Sem Chumbo:

Oh my god, what was Rod thinking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Parq:

Heh. Was just thinking, gee, that sounds like Rod McKuen.
Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Ira:

There are clearly multiple ways to listen to the warm!
Avatar 4:03pm Sem Chumbo:

Love to have thirty or so of Doc's jackets. Stylish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm mariano:

Sorry for the morbidity!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm ChrisB.:

Joey Ramone?
Avatar 4:09pm mark r:

Dick Shawn very famously died onstage. Had a heart attack, everybody thought he was doing a bit, until they realized he wasn't kidding and it was too late to do anything (in fairness, he might have died anyway).
Avatar 4:11pm Sem Chumbo:

Lorenzo San DuBois.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Parq:

John Lennon was named in Cheryl Crow's "Maybe
Angels' and by the 'Mones doing "Rock & Roll Radio" and was one of a number of musicians namechecked by James Brown, Bobby Byrd and Hank Ballard in "Funky Side of Town".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm JP from KC:

Here you go, Mariano! en.wikipedia.org...
  4:12pm Polyus:

I think Irwin is supposed to clean the bathrooms.
  4:13pm P-90:

Irwin doesn't seem like the kind of guy who wouldn't do his chore. Does he?
  4:13pm MONEYBAG$:

Ira, just vacuum with the mic on. Maybe turn on some reverb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm mariano:

Thanks @JP!
  4:14pm berbo:

No, vacuum cleaning is Irwin's assigned chore. He voluntarily cleans the bathrooms for the fun of it.
Avatar 4:15pm mark r:

There's a chart in the kitchen and on the elevator. This is fascinating inside info for listeners who haven't been to the station, a peek behind the curtain, as it were. Like most peeks behind the curtain, you usually end up understanding the function of curtains more than anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Parq:

Wow, JP, Redd Fox and Dick Shawn *both* had their deaths mistaken for a part of their acts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm melinda:

Ultimate Care II sounds like the name of a vacuum cleaner or other appliance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm ChrisB.:

"Dancing with Joey Ramone," Amy Rigby, "I Want to Be Your Joey Ramone," Sleater Kinney, "The Miracle of Joey Ramone," U2.
Avatar 4:17pm Sem Chumbo:

@Parq: quite the co-inky-dink, huh?
Must have looked at the same Wiki-thingy pages as I did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm sphere:

this could be a significant moment in WFMU history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm fleep:

Didn't know he played Hooverphone as well. What a talent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Kat in Chicago:

This is such a WFMU moment. Live vacuuming over a track created from samples of washing machine sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Wendy del Formaggio:

You missed a spot, Ira.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm sphere:

Matmos uses the washing machine in the live show supporting the album, or so i hear.
  4:19pm MONEYBAG$:

Maybe Irwin could do this over a Joe Frank episode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Kat in Chicago:

@melinda pitchfork.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Parq:

Kat, yes, that pretty much sums the whole thing up, doesn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Kat in Chicago:

@sphere they do! sadly, I missed the Chicago stop.
Avatar 4:20pm mark r:

Ultimate Care II sounds like a skin care "system" Cindy Crawford would hawk on a 1 am infomercial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm melinda:

Thanks Kat. Of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Kat in Chicago:

Ultimate Care II would be a lovely name for all manner of things.
Avatar 4:23pm Sem Chumbo:

Thx for that, Kat. Order yourself an adult beverage on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Kat in Chicago:

Will do, Sem. Might have to wait till after work though.
  4:25pm Archival Detritus:

LOVE the vacuuming. So down to earth.
Avatar 4:29pm Sem Chumbo:

I like that. *might*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Carmichael:

Hey there Ira and Dana.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm ChrisB.:

"Hey Ray, lighten up!"
"OK, here's "Guitarzan."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Kat in Chicago:

Ha, I was just about to make a Gitarzan reference
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Cliff:

Aww jeez, I went out for a walk and missed Matmos. Well I could always go down to the basement and bang on the washing machines with some sledgehammers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm JP from KC:

You won't replicate this performance, Cliff. Ira was vacuuming live on-air while it played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Cliff:

Well I gotta listen to that on the archives, then!
Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Ira:

Joey Ramone! Do the Fleshtones or Ronnie Spector mention him by name too? (I can't check right now.)
  4:44pm P-90:

"Dark Star"! I was going nuts trying to remember where this was from-had to check the playlist. The USC student film of John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon, later fleshed out for theatrical release. NGC 891 is an actual nebula, up there in the sky.
  4:51pm berbo:

Is John Carpenter the composer on the Dark Star track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Michael 98145:

My favorite NGC object is WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...how nice to come home to this RubberSoul outtake rarity ...
Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Ira:

That's right--Julius LaRosa--the 133rd 5th Beatle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...tho' I missed the Elevators & 10YearsAfter doing Woody Herman...
  4:59pm bobsmart567:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm melinda:

This is lovely.
  5:01pm P-90:

I suspect the corny old-fashioned "dance hall" music that plays after the computer voice announces "Martin Segundo and the Scintilla Strings" came from a catalog of stock music cues you can buy for your movie for a few bucks. Not like Carpenter's later synth-based stuff at all. The joke was that the astronauts stuck on this multi-year space mission would have to listen to this muzak on board. "When Moonlight Falls on NGC 891" is a Jetsons-ish joke about an old-fashioned big-band type song title with an astronomical reference thrown in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Uncle Michael:

Greetings, Ira. If you haven't heard the actual firing, it's beyond imagining. It's breathtaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Julius LaRosa: one of those guys whose obituary you're surprised to read, because you would have guessed he'd been gone a while already...
  5:11pm Matt:

They're playing the nationals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I had no idea there was a Mets MSR Madness song. I am not sure if I am happy or frightened.
  5:14pm ylabuk:

we want you drop by to istanbul again soon!!
Swag For Life Member 5:15pm mauri:

mo' hammered all eee
  5:26pm bobsmart567:

Dudes sound pretty baked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm melinda:

I didn't know Harper's Bizarre covered this. @bobsmart: yeah, I was gonna say it's like the Valium version of Knock on Wood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Carmichael:

Ted Templeman was the de facto leader of Harper's Bizarre.
  5:28pm bobsmart567:

We've gone from Vicodin to speed
  5:31pm Clay:

Checking in late, unfortunately, but loving it. Julius LaRosa ... I think his career was derailed by Arthur Godfrey on live TV, but you've probably gone over this. And as far as stage deaths ... the only thing that comes to mind is Gary Thain from Uriah Heep who was electrocuted onstage ... died later of complications. Always remember ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Uncle Michael:

Parkyakarkus died at the podium during a Friar's Club roast and people assumed it was a gag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm steveo:

Rockin' show, guvnor.
  5:33pm Clay:

Ha! Rod McKuen, Celebrity Twist. He must have doubled down on the Twist craze entries ... I remember he did Oliver Twist (a twist song) circa '62.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Cliff:

"1673: Molière, the French actor and playwright, died after being seized by a violent coughing fit while playing the title role in his play Le Malade imaginaire (The Hypochondriac)." - from en.wikipedia.org...
  5:40pm flashbazbo:

Ooh me me....Didn't mark sandman die onstage?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm ChrisB.:

Ira's speaking voice is so much like his singing voice, he could make a bonus track out of the playlist.
Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Ira:

Oliver Twist is the B-side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Carmichael:

@UM: Was parkyakarkus the father of Albert Brooks (and Judy the Cop)?
  5:44pm Clay:

Thanks for the clarification on McKuen. From Wiki "Actor and comedian Joe E. Ross suffered a heart attack and died while performing on stage. His wife reportedly collected just half of Ross' fee because he had failed to do a full show."
  5:44pm Fredericks:

I thought David Gilgour was Yo La Tengo. Then I said "no way." Ken would slap Ira's knuckles with a ruler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Carmichael.
Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Ira:

David Gil-M-our = Yo La Tengo, so no Pink Floyd on this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Linda Lee:

really, really lovely show Ira. thank you!
  5:47pm Fredericks:

Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Ira:

Thanks, everyone!!
Was that a request for one more twist number? Coming right up . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Set of joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Linda Lee:

love the joey dee mightily.
  5:51pm Fredericks:

Hope it's the "The Basie Twist" — Count Basie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Cliff:

Thank you Ira!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm ChrisB.:

That's one hot tambourine!
  5:52pm bobsmart567:

Plays a mean tambourine
  5:52pm Fredericks:

Not really. The thought disgusts me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Linda Lee:

i see ferris wheels!
  5:53pm Fredericks:

Clayton, it's Joey Dee!
Avatar 5:54pm Sem Chumbo:

Swell afternoon, Ira the K. (Kid Congo et al a special trea)t. Hope to hear you around here again before long. Bye!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Parq:

Dug the show big-time ITK. By the way, the bad poet also did something called "(You Ought To See) Oliver Twist". Bill Kelly plays it every now and again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Carmichael:

I remember seeing the Dick Van Dyke show, where they found a singing sensation who had a new dance called "The Twizzle".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm melinda:

Thanks for the tunes Ira!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Carmichael:

Yeah, thanks Ira. This has been swell.
Avatar 5:59pm Monica:

H'Ira! Great show, wonderful surprise.
  5:59pm bobsmart567:
