I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

8-BIT WARNING! Today's Play Vertigo features Japanese composers who made huge contributions to the artistry of computer/video games.

Can't wait!
Avatar 4:58pm hyde:

i'm here for the Koji Kondo

Oh hells yes. By coincidence I was listening to chiptune music for an imaginary video game on the FMA this weekend, so I am ALL SET for this show.

Hi Mayuko and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm listener james from westwood:

My thumbs are moving on their own accord over an invisible game controller!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm rbxbx:

Did anyone else go see Makigami Koichi from Hikashu @ The Stone last week? Pretty sure Mayuko's show was my introduction to him/them.
Avatar 5:06pm Mayuko:

Hello everyone, thank you for tuning into to this show which could possbly cause your brain cells to decrease into 8-bit!
Avatar 5:06pm Mayuko:

I did, rbxbx!!! Was pretty great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm listener james from westwood:

I proofread a book that contained 600 QR codes. Had to proofread those too, by comparing them versus their original art. By the end my entire world looked as blocky as Donkey Kong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm JtotheK:

hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm rbxbx:

@Mayuko yeah! I super enjoyed myself. Was actually my first time at The Stone as well, which is something I've been meaning to do since I moved to NYC like 4 years ago, haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm rbxbx:

Okkyung Lee and Ikue Mori were great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm rbxbx:

I loved Fantasy Zone – those games were so fun.
Avatar 5:14pm Mayuko:

Feels like it's pretty common for us to fall into Donkey-Kongish situation in our lives, james...

Hello JtotheK!
Avatar 5:15pm Mayuko:

the set I saw was only him and Ikue Mori, rbxbx - he was not only good but also hilarious! Would have been nice if I could see other sets, too.
Avatar 5:15pm Mayuko:

And Koichi is coming back to NYC next year in May again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm JtotheK:

Really enjoying this program, great idea for a show. Trying to think back to all the 8-bit themes I enjoyed on the NES. The cutscene music for Ninja Gaiden comes to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm rbxbx:

Excellent. Will try to catch him again – I could imagine the set w/ just him and Ikue Mori being great in its own right as well. The 5 piece I saw got a bit harmonically dense at times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm JtotheK:

hahaha -- the goonies!
Avatar 5:19pm hyde:

i liked the music for Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but i only ever heard the first couple themes because that game was so damned hard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm steve:

hey Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm rbxbx:

@hyde haha yeah, so many of these older games were just me playing the first two stages over and over :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm JtotheK:

@hyde -- as was the genesis Ghosts and Goblins, and the NES Ghouls and Ghosts (I may have the titles backwards). Poor knight always running around in his undies sans armor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm steve:

i heard the Bubble Bobble music in public yesterday and recognized it immediately, even having not played the game since i was 10
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm JtotheK:

Goonies on NES was a solid game!
Avatar 5:22pm Mayuko:

Great, JtotheK, I first thought it could be a too silly idea, but I like them! so... Glad you're enjoying them too!

Hey steve! Happy to have you here!
Avatar 5:22pm hyde:

ah, Hip Tanaka. Now there's a giant.
Avatar 5:24pm Mayuko:

YES! Hip Tanaka, I didn't even know he's still active under that name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Polyus:

I feel like I am supposed to be running around my house, picking up various items for points and jumping over stuff.
Avatar 5:28pm hyde:

Tanaka designed the Game Boy camera too! he seems like kind of an amazing guy. i love the Metroid soundtrack.
Avatar 5:28pm Mayuko:

I feel exactly the same here, Polyus, and welcome on board!

My cat usually dislikes WFMU shows -- including, maybe even especially, my own. This is him right now: 2.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm rbxbx:

@gary :D
Avatar 5:34pm hyde:

@Gary now you know how to fend off his attacks during your show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm listener james from westwood:

@Gary: Didn't your cat draw blood mid-show sometime in the past few weeks?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm listener james from westwood:

"It's much more exciting when you're killing each other." COSIGNED.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm listener james from westwood:

Ooh, Xevious, that was a good one. That and Zaxxon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Gary:

Ezra's day is not really complete unless he has drawn blood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm listener james from westwood:

wocka wocka wocka wocka
Avatar 5:52pm Mayuko:

@Gary haha! I wonder how other cats are reacting to this?! I have seen cat owners saying their cats are upset on many fmu playlists.
Avatar 5:53pm hyde:

Retronauts, which is a classic videogame podcast i listen to, did a nice and informative thing on the evolution on music in games a couple years back. It's with the guy from Lost Turntable, I remember it being a good listen: www.retronauts.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Gary:

That looks like a terrific show, Hyde -- thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm steve:

i wish the Mario picking up coins sound would play every time anyone gives or receives money
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm listener james from westwood:

There's Donkey Kong!
Avatar 6:00pm Mayuko:

Thank you for the tip, hyde!
Avatar 6:03pm Mayuko:

yah, that would give us more sense of accomplishment, steve.
Avatar 6:13pm geezerette:

Mayuko, how delightful and funny! My cat would have loved this show. She'd be trying to find the source of the sounds and then pouncing on imaginary creatures in pools of actual sunlight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Polyus:

Alright, going to have to catch the rest of this awesome show on the archives - heading out to see Beyonce in a big stadium. Most likely in a downpour. How did I get roped into that?
Avatar 6:16pm Mayuko:

geezerette, thanks for tuning in! Polyus, enjoy the Beyonce!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Gary:

I'm pretty sure this music is a pretty good approximation of what cats are thinking 24/7
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm listener james from westwood:

Galaga! Gotta get the two-spaceship thing going so I can fire two bullets!
Avatar 6:19pm hyde:

haha, @ljfw. galaga was one of my fave arcade games.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm listener james from westwood:

Likewise, hyde!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Parq:

Joining late. I keep waiting for Joe Belock to do a mike break.
Avatar 6:44pm Mayuko:

Parq, welcome on board! Is Joe a game lover?? I should have invited him to join me when I saw him earlier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Gary:

Super great show, Mayuko -- I'm off to eat dinner, but I loved it
Avatar 6:50pm Mayuko:

Thank you, Gary! Enjoy your dinner!
Avatar 6:51pm Mayuko:

Coming up next is Global Grease with Kim Sorise! Playlist & comment: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Parq:

'Yaku, for years, Joe's talkover music was an 8-bit game theme that he and Todd O Phonic Tood recorded analog with a four-track reel to reel at the Jersey Shore.
Avatar 6:54pm Mayuko:

ah! I wanna hear that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Parq:

This current one, the Taisho K,is adorable.
Avatar 6:57pm Mayuko:

I guess this is my last song for this show today - will be on the air filling in for Dave Hill from 9pm, this time with music made of much more than 8bit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Parq:

Wait, fill-in for Dave Hill tonight? Cool! I can listen while I'm in the kitchen.
Avatar 6:58pm hyde:

this was great. thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Mayuko! This was a lot of fun!!
Avatar 7:01pm Mayuko:

Thank you all for listening! Have a great week!
  8:09pm mzm:

great! this show could be one of the memorable fmu shows. I loved it eventhough 'm not crazy of games. btw did you know 'カッパ' came from rainwear "gabba"?
  8:30pm mzmzz:

omg, this show makes Kenny G shows all combined in shame! Conceptttttttt!!! my brain starts itching, see my bad sentences?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Amanda:

Loved it. This is a treasure trove! Amazing job Mayuko!
  9:21pm mzmzz2:

just shopped around, there are 3 volumes of ファミコン 20TH アニバーサリー オリジナルサウンドトラックス. whmmm, should I order them....?
Avatar 10:01am Raika:

Wow, an 8-bit vgm episode. That was awesome. Needed some Sega Mark III/Master System love though!
Avatar 10:15am Mayuko:

Thank you for listening and comment, all! Raika, I picked music of the games I actually played & liked, and didn't own Sega Mark III sadly - I wish!!
Avatar 2:42pm fred:

That was fun, even though I never was much into video games: I was so bad at these!
I'm glad you played Omodaka, I first heard them on Gary's premium, and I love everything I heard from them so far.
This might be a bit far fetched, but I think you might like Nox Factio. One of my fave bands, though I don't know whether they are still active. They would use video games as sound sources live, heavily processed of course, for the rhythm in there. There's part of a show on the FMA (I was there, but I don't remember whether they used games then. The start of the second side makes me think they did): freemusicarchive.org...
Avatar 1:21am Mayuko:

Thank you fred. Just downloaded Nox Factio, I figured I love it in the first second. I wasn't too good at video games either, I don't know how I was able to have such patience to play them then!
Avatar 4:17pm fred:

I'm so glad you like it!
