I just got why you changed your avatar. RIP Paul Smoker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am
Jeff Golick:

You give me too much credit, @Peter. Though I am retroactively claiming that as the reason.

i confess i thought that avatar was the "hanker for a hunka cheese" guy at a glance

I can see that, @hyde. That would be Timer, of course. Glad to see you here! (The avatar is in fact "Jeff the diseased lung," a mascot invented by the John Oliver program.)

This song has one of Ellington's best bridges. Such a weird composition.

Guess who plays piano on this Moses tune.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:43am

I had the same thought: great piano, I forget who is on this album...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am
Jeff Golick:

Hint: the answer is in the title.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:44am
Peter from DE:

Is it Stanley Cowell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am
Jeff Golick:

It's a pretty varied line-up: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Peter from DE:

So it's Moses himself, I would not have guessed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Jeff Golick:

I can hear the Cowell, Peter, but I believe on this cut it's a guy named Stan Free!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am
Jeff Golick:

Around this time, Free covered Gershon Kingsley's "Pop Corn" on Moog and had a big hit, as Hot Butter.

The Seventies were weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
coelacanth:

good morning Jeffs and others

We're going down the rabbit hole now... I want to learn more about Stanley Free! Speaking of Moog... a composer friend of mine is in North Carolina this weekend at "Moog Fest."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am
Jeff Golick:

Yah I've been seeing instagram posts from a friend at that same fest!
  10:00am
Gary:

Oh, I need to listen to Ridgewood on the archives today
  10:04am

I keep seeing lots of pics of someone or something called Sun 0))) [sp.?] at that Moog fest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am

Oh yeah you will like them, Gary. @UM played something by them (w Scott Walker) on Friday, btw.

Good morning from Victoriaville
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
Jeff Golick:

Good morning and welcome, Mr Waterloo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am
Jeff Golick:

Do you think they have some kind of sensor at Moog Fest that goes off every time someone mispronounces "Moog?"
  10:17am
Andrew Waterloo:

It would probably go off every time I said Moog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Jeff Golick:

Maybe that's the closing act at the fest.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am
Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am

interesting that sunn o))) would be at the moog fest. synthesisers are not a big part of their sound, and especially not the moog. (at least by my experience)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Jeff Golick:

You're really in the weeds with that comment, @Doug.

@Doug I can take whatever DO can dish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Jeff Golick:

As long as someone else does the dishes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Jeff Golick:

Our landlord just installed a washer/dryer unit in the basement, for our use. This is a major breakthrough. We still lack a dishwasher. I'm so sick of doing dishes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Jeff Golick:

(Although dish-doing is good WFMU-listening time.)
  10:36am
Andrew Korell:

must be going, great show, will catch it in the archives

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am
coelacanth:

i must say that Paul Smoker has not made me furrow my brow once today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
coelacanth:

rest in peace, Mr. Smoker.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Doug Schulkind:

John Lurie once came over to my future wife at a party and asked her opinion. Hey Jessie, we're starting a band. Should we call it the Eels or the Lounge Lizards? The Eels, definitely the Eels, she responded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
Jeff Golick:

What did you respond, Doug?
  11:05am
Dean:

I missed out on the bad news about Paul Smoker. So sorry to learn it.

Is it too soon to wonder whether he got a special kick out of that Monty Python travel agent routine?

Lurie should have gone with Definitely the Eels.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:05am
Doug Schulkind:

It was long before I knew Jessie.
  11:06am
Gary:

Mongo Santamaria!
  11:07am
Dean:

My kid just watched Blazing Saddles a couple times. I had to explain why that moment is funny. There's a lot more explaining to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Dean! I'm totally blanking on the travel agent bit...helpl?
  11:09am
Dean:

Mr. Smoketoomuch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am
Jeff Golick:

Ah yes. I knew it was a name...ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am
coelacanth:

"what do you mean,'i better cut down'. i don't understand."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
coelacanth:

('probably shouldn't put quotes around that...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am
Jeff Golick:

"Whisk it."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Jeff Golick:

I should probably end the set here with Baby Jean but I'm not gonna.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:19am
Doug Schulkind:

I like Braxton's version of this better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Jeff Golick:

Doug, I'm stuck in a dance loop. How do I get out?
  11:22am
Dean:

Strauss waltzes will cure your ill.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Doug Schulkind:

Now you're stuck in a Toop loop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Jeff Golick:

That cure may be worse than the sickness.
  11:26am
Gary:

I've read all but one of Toop's books but I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm pretty sure this is the first track by him I've ever heard
  11:27am
Dean:

If you got a sweet tooth, opt for the marzipan buttercream cake. It will not only satisfy, but completely obliterate your appetite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
Jeff Golick:

And I've only read part of one of Toop's books, Gary. Always more to explore...which is I guess a good thing?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52am
Doug Schulkind:

Mt Hill is sounding quite Ruddian with his lion's roaritude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am
Jeff Golick:

I hear that.
  11:57am
Dean:

I think it was that Tyrone Hill record I long ago took to a local stereo store to demonstrate CIMP recordings to one of the sales people, a friend of Joe Henderson's and fellow sax player who had done some recording engineering over the years. He was very impressed.
  11:58am
Gary:

Aw, man. You can keep going!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am
coelacanth:

Thanks Jeff! have a great week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm

Loved it.
Thanks Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm

Thanks, @Gary, @coelacanth, @Stanley! Catch you all soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
Jeff Golick:

@Dean: that sounds about right - take care!
