Laura Gibson live on WFMU

Live performance and chat with Laura Gibson

After a four-year gap, singer/songwriter Laura Gibson has released "Empire Builder," an album inspired by two major life events. Her main inspiration was the Amtrak train route she took while moving from Oregon to New York. Then after moving to NYC, Gibson lost all her possessions in the East Village building explosion in March of 2015. Laura's music has a simplicity that is emotionally dark and uplifting at the same time. As she describes the resulting album, "The title (Empire Builder) seemed appropriate because it captures a moment right in the middle of a big personal change." Laura Gibson dropped by WFMU to play live.

So I love these daily chess improvement thingys, and this most recent one is kind of perplexing me. I think it's just a simple Q move to E2 for what looks like mate to me. Must be missing something.

Oh wow, Laura Gibson...really been digging what I've been hearing all over fmu from her. I actually recommended her to my wife a couple weeks ago.

Oh God. Actually I would have just made the worst move possible, ensuring total and utter defeat with that Q move. Boggle. I need more beer.

Hi Mike, Jeff and Tommy! Glad you're also tunes in. I'm setting up for a set with Laura Gibson, so I'm a little distracted tonight.

So, I got my ticket for Samantha Fish appearing here soon. Blues singer / guitarist extraordinaire, incredibly talented! She probably can even play chess much better than me. She's played with Buddy Guy, etc. Just incredible performer. I don't think FMU knows who she is though.

We're outside of Walton and beyond the transmitter,s reach but thankfully I've got cell service and we bought a new Bluetooth-enabled camping radio. No tape deck though :/

Re: The shock of returning to the usual after a long weekend.

Better to have Monday off than Friday. Then you get to ease back into things with a four-day week, so to speak. At least for those whose usual is a Monday thru Friday kind of thing.

And thankful that Laura was the inspiration behind the creation of NPR's Tiny Desk series, which I love!

@Van in DC: You want to move the rook to trap the White king back on the 1st rank. Then it is a matter of swinging the Black queen around to deliver checks until mate.

Yeah, I don't think Venus shows up in red Van in DC, maybe it was Mars?

Or, you know, swamp gas.

Saw my own UFO last October, it was doing a loop-de-loop around about a 12 arc-minute area in the sky. Very bizarre!
Avatar 9:48pm
Van in DC:

wow. I've seen things as well. Like in the middle of nowhere, Texas, a bright light screaming across the skyline then, without slowing down, angling straight up and going into orbit I think, in just seconds. Astonishing speed and change of direction. Impossible stuff.
  9:52pm
Cliff:

geezerette told me the other day that years ago she went out to Area 51, and saw 5 green lights go up and down from the ground and sideways - she said it was so absurd to see something with her own eyes that you always hear UFO fanatics on TV talking about :)
Avatar 9:52pm
Van in DC:

I thought that when I had a Top Secret / SCI clearance in the black Intel world for well over a decade that I might chance upon, er, proof of some sort, in some way, but even Groom Lake secrets were beyond my reach. (That's "Dreamland", or "Area 51"). Talk about compartment-ed.
  9:53pm
Cliff:

Gotta love bureaucracy
Avatar 9:55pm
Van in DC:

I had multiple coworkers apply for what's called a "Green Door" assignment to Groom Lake. Every one of them were deserving, every one was denied. They are super selective, and I have no idea what their criteria might be.
Avatar 9:57pm
Van in DC:

My favorite NPR Tiny Desk concert moment was when Pat Benatar appeared, with her husband. They did a set and were gearing up to sing Promises In The Dark. They couldn't remember how it started!! It was hilarious. HUGE crowd, and nobody knew! I was screaming at my computer "NEVER AGAIN!" but it took them a while to figure it out. LOL
Avatar 9:59pm

Irene, of course, in case folks didn't know, does Soundcheck engineering for NPR.... another favorite :)
