Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am melinda:

hello joe, annie & everyone!
Avatar 9:03am KP:

Good morning, JMcG in the AM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Guido from Cologne:

Good morning Joe!
if I remember right, there were debates about how much of a bootleg "Dragon" is. Some say it is Aphrodite's Child -material actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am MD:

Good Morning Freeform Hooligans!!!
Avatar 9:10am Cheri Pi:

Yass Vangelis! it's gonna be a great day.
Avatar 9:10am Joe McG:

Good Monday to you, radio friends! @Guido: I know that Vangelis didn't want it released, but as far as I know it was recorded in London, not Greece.
Avatar 9:11am Marcel M:

Morning Joe and friends. Cool opening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Guido from Cologne:

actually sounds great.
Avatar 9:11am Marcel M:

They were like, "You want to release that?! We were tripping face!"
Avatar 9:13am Joe McG:

@Marcel: Ha ha ha! Probably not too far from the truth!
Avatar 9:16am Marcel M:

@Joe: I'm sure! You know those Cosmic Joker records? Someone invited all those dudes over to take drugs and jam in his studio. Supposedly the players didn't realize he was going to release it, and one day Manuel Göttsching walked into a record store where it was playing and asked the clerk who it was cuz he dug it or something.
Avatar 9:17am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Joe, and assembled friends of Clan McGasko.
Avatar 9:18am Joe McG:

@Marcel: Wow, that's screwed up. I only have one of them, but it sounds like they're having fun!
Avatar 9:19am Sem Chumbo:

Puff: more Dragons in the mornings' mix.
  9:22am djsheilab:

Morning Joe! Just tuning in and I see/ hear dragons!!! Haha! Excellent.
Avatar 9:22am PKNY:

G'TZAG, Joe and everybody! I'm sensing a theme here...will we hearing Queen's "Dragon Attack"? *crosses fingers*
Avatar 9:24am Joe McG:

@DJSheilaB: Yes, it's my new format for the summer. I hope everyone likes it!
  9:24am Brendan:

Morning ...draggin my ass in
Swag For Life Member 9:24am tadpoles:

Ha Joe... there was a Kiwi band called Dragon in the '70's. I preferred Split EnZ myself. Cheers!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Guido from Cologne:

No request, just a guess:
about to hear the Diabolical Biz Markie "The Dragon"?
Avatar 9:25am PKNY:

@Guido - YES YES YES!
Avatar 9:26am Marcel M:

Dudes we goin' all out dragon today. Can we get some Dragonball theme songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am JP from KC:

Hey Y'all. Seems my computer is having a harder time waking up than even I am this morning. I think that's a sign that we should both take the day off.
Avatar 9:27am Joe McG:

@tadpoles: How funny! We also have another record by a band called Dragon in the record library, but I think they are from somewhere else...Eastern Europe? BTW, I'm kidding about the dragon format, but all of your suggestions are excellent!
  9:29am Stanley:

Hi Joe and all assembled. I'm a bit late for my dragon pun, so I'll just say I don't mind if this theme continues
Avatar 9:29am Sem Chumbo:

hahaha, Joe

@Sheilab: My glasses are foggy from looking at this picture of Tommy James.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am annie:

i got a shiver of joy when i heard that sheila..
  9:42am KP:

"Rocky" was based on the Bayonne Bleeder, Chuck Wepner, and the fight in which he knocked down (tripped) Ali.
Avatar 9:43am Joe McG:

@KP: Wow, I didn't know that! @Brendan: Is Joe Frazier still with us?
Avatar 9:44am Cecile:

nope, Frazier passed away about 5 years ago.
Avatar 9:44am Cecile:

There was an Australian band called Dragon.
  9:45am Stanley:

I'm up for a spin of Johnny Wakelin's 'In Zaire', if that's the groove
  9:45am djsheilab:

This record is the greatest!!!!!
Avatar 9:45am Polyus:

Who will fight Mr. Tooth Decay now?
Avatar 9:46am Joe McG:

@Stanley: Damn, Stanley, I searched for that record for 15 minutes this morning. Allegedly we have it on a single, but I can't find it. @Polyus: I'm purposely not playing that, but it was on Beware of the Blog back in the day.
Avatar 9:46am Cecile:

Or Wakelin's "Black Superman"
Avatar 9:47am Cecile:

play a YouTube rip. We're all adults here.
  9:47am Brendan:

There was a nice movie called Facing Ali that came out a while back ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M6PLAiguds ) . Interviews with his opponents and a great picture of the era. @Joe no, your namesake passed a few years ago.
  9:47am KP:

Alcapone is such an awesome name
Avatar 9:48am Marcel M:

Loving this Dennis Alcapone track.
Avatar 9:49am Cecile:

I was always more of a Frazier fan. But I respect Ali's reputation.
Avatar 9:49am Joe McG:

@Cecile: OK, Cecile, you convinced me. I usually hate playing YouTube clips, but I couldn't find the damn thing this morning, so I'll do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Ken From Hyde Park:

The Democracy Now program this morning had a nice segment on Ali. I'll try to come back and post a link later on when its archive becomes available.
  9:51am KP:

"Dylan sang about the then Cassius Clay in his 1964 song, "I Shall Be Free, No. 10," writing in the style of the boxer's famous poetic pronouncements and mentioning him by name."

Avatar 9:52am Cecile:

it sounds pretty good, Joe!
  9:53am KP:

Ali "Shuffle" ha ha ha!
Avatar 9:53am Roberto:

This is my favorite Ali-related song.
Avatar 9:54am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Not horrible, but it's pushed up to the top of the board. I didn't realize this was Top 10 and probably on those Billboard comps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am coelacanth:

greetings Smokin' Joe and contenders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Tim 07030:

Good morning Joe! This set is making me want to punch a coworker!
Avatar 9:55am Boomis:

Has each song played featured the lyrics "Float like a butterfly and stings like a bee"? I feel they all started with that line and went from there.
Avatar 9:56am Cecile:

Joe, you can't know everything. Thank you for playing it!
Avatar 9:56am Joe McG:

@Tim: Ha ha ha! Just tell your boss it was a tribute to the memory of Ali.
  9:57am Brendan:

Smokin Joe could seriously sing.
  10:01am kevlicki:

Joe, Really enjoying this set.
Good morning all!

@Brian: I remember that fight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Ken From Hyde Park:

Jonesey & X.Ray had a delightful boxing conversation yesterday. I liked the name Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini.
  10:24am Brian in New Orleans:

Saw it with my Dad on a big screen in Brockton Mass. Hagler lived in an apartment complex I was a security guard in . I still have the Christmas card he and his wife Berth gave me. I found a link to that fight but I'm not allowed to post it here..it is easy to find. 3 amzing rounds ...WOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Greg from ZONE 5:

@Ken: Their whole show yesterday was brilliant.

they were from Flint, MI. People were very excited in Lower Michigan when they had their hit.
Avatar 10:46am Boomis:

OMG! The ode to Sheila E. haven't heard this in ages.
  10:48am Listener Alexandra:

SO good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am sphere:

hey folks. could Oh Sheila be the best non-Prince Prince song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Goyim in the AM:

Briefly went to college with a young man (from Michigan) who insisted that this song was about his sister, who was not Sheila E. Except for the two-chords-and-no-bridge thing, it's a passable Prince rip-off.
Avatar 10:49am Cecile:

I think the Time did a few that were up there, but I have to say it's in the top three for sure.
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

Hi Alex! Birthday week for you!
  10:50am JakeGould:

@Cecile: Prince pretty much composed tons of “Time” tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Goyim in the AM:

Crying at the Discotheque still gets entirely too much airplay over here. I nearly reached for the remote!
Avatar 10:54am Cecile:

Whoops, I thought Pandemonium was farther removed from Prince than it was. Please ignore that last post.

I failed Guitar Face
Avatar 11:11am Brian in UK:

First pub rock band?
Avatar 11:14am Cecile:

I will say that Slade and the Sweet were closer to straight up rock 'n' roll than they were to glam or pomp rock. But they were considered teeny bop music, too.

Snakefinger was from Chilly Willy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am JP from KC:

Don't yell at the DJ's, briaboy. They're liable to retaliate with shitty Eagles covers... or worse.
Actually, I don't know what's worse than shitty Eagles covers.
Avatar 11:16am Cecile:

having said that, though, Damn! Eggs over Easy!
Avatar 11:17am Brian in UK:

@Cecile Snakefinger and Martin Stone late of Mighty Baby formed the Willies. Pete Thomas was the drummer. That man hits the drums so darn hard.
Avatar 11:17am Joe McG:

@briaboy: I talk for about 10 minutes every week at 11. If you don't like it, don't tune in at that time. The show is otherwise almost wall-to-wall music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Goyim in the AM:

He registered to make that particular whine. That's thoroughly modern, which is not a complement.
Avatar 11:19am Cecile:

BrianUK, yeah, Pete Thomas is a monster drummer, for sure!

On Stage 3 tonight for the first time in a heckuva long time: www.rockwoodmusichall.com
Avatar 11:21am Cecile:

I didn't know Max Merritt and the Meteors were considered among the pub rockers. They were an Australian band who were in the charts in the 60s, and had a hit in '76 after years over in England.
Avatar 11:22am Brian in UK:

Joe, this is totally bonkers hearing these gents after all this time.
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

@Brian: Pretty wild, huh? Both of these dudes have been active in the music biz all of these years, but just recently EOE has been getting more attention. New anthology coming out soon on Yep Roc!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am JP from KC:

Plus, the time Joe, or any of the other FMU DJs spend talking is still less than half the time of most commercial DJ's. And nowhere near as vapid. I'd rather hear Joe talk for 10 minutes about something interesting and pertinent to the music, than any of my local DJs talk about nothing for 2.
Avatar 11:24am Dominick:

very nice
Avatar 11:25am Joe McG:

@JP: Thanks JP, I appreciate that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am JP from KC:

You're welcome, Joe. Now shut up and play the hits. ;)
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@JP: Ha ha! Every one a #1. :)
  11:29am em:

I second JP from KC's comment. I had to listen to a commercial NYC classic rock station recently for the first time in years, and was absolutely appalled. They play four songs, then the DJ literally reads two commercials, then they play about 10 minutes of actual commercials. It is truly a dying medium. I'll take FMU DJ mic breaks full of erudite musings any day.
Avatar 11:30am Jeff:

I like these guys. Their music is charmingly engaging.
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

Thanks, em!
Avatar 11:31am Joe McG:

WFMU Talk Warning: 10 minute interview coming up
Avatar 11:31am Jeff:

A question, though: when does music begin to choogle?

Is that a question like, "When does a spending increase begin to whop?"? (And who famously asked the latter question - was it Edwin Newman?)
Avatar 11:32am Joe McG:

@Jeff: I think choogling began around 1968. Got intense in the early 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Greg from ZONE 5:

@em: Seconded. I would put on Hot 97 on my way to the train sometimes and my whole drive was commercials from end to end. So I switched back to JM in the AM (and occasionally Uncle Floyd)
Avatar 11:36am geezerette:

Went sort of Mose Allison for a moment.
These guys are charming!
Never heard this show before,Howdy Joe & company. :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Mike East:

I used to be an over easy guy, but my wife likes sunnyside up which is actually much easier, so I've converted.
  11:45am Brendan:

Eggs Over Easy . Glad the pub scene worked out but can't help but wonder if they missed out on the Diner Rock scene with their name.

Cool interview, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am JP from KC:

Thanks for this set, Joe. I was completely unfamiliar, but now I'll be on the lookout for some EOE to add to my library.
Avatar 11:50am Brian in UK:

That is about par for the Eggs Over Easy story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Ken From Hyde Park:

Could the playlist page provide some kind of "I Can't Take It" button that listeners could use to bail out? It could provide a menu of alternate sounds for X number of minutes. X=3, 5, 10 or "until the next show starts," etc. The alternate sounds could be Muzak®, crickets, the DJ's bed music on loop, a microphone on the roof, etc.
Avatar 11:50am Joe McG:

You bet, JP! Glad you enjoyed it, Brian! A few technical issues today, but I think it's sorted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am JP from KC:

That's actually a great idea, Ken. I like the mic on the roof suggestion. That seems very WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Parq:

Tangential but worth mentioning. A female comedian talked about getting worked over by a self-styled make out artist, who promised her breakfast -- "how do you like your eggs?" She answered, "I like my eggs unfertilized, now get out of my face."
Avatar 11:54am Joe McG:

@Parq: Zing!
Avatar 11:55am Brian in UK:

@JP Meaghan's bed music was from Coney Island boardwalk. Street sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Mick:

I've been on the outskirts of radioland this morning, but super show Joe (what I've been able to hear of it) Thanks for the Eggs Over Easy set & interview - a real treat!

@Brian in UK: That's awesome! Almost as good as Donna's purring cats bed. Or maybe that was Cheyenne. I don't remember.

Joe, I'm just astonished that you or anyone is aware of Eggs Over Easy. I have the Edsel reissue of the Good 'N' Cheap album. The song Arkansas is amazing, as though early Wilco heard that song and said "that's how we should sound". One of the earliest things you could call country rock.
