	12:42pm Dean: Somebody needs to explore the semiotics of meatloaf, a la Barthes. One of the crass cartoons my kids watch features a stay-at-home dad who makes an evidently inedible meatloaf at virtually every meal. It hurts me, because my meatloaf is usually pretty good.

	2:00pm Dean: Do tell. None of the places near me here has a "best" gyro, I'm afraid. Might be better places in SF. Won't have a car in Chicago, so we'll use the public transit, which is how we get around 1/3 of the time around here, anyway. When I travel solo I look for dining destinations, where that means "nice" restaurants. Too hard/$$$$ with young kids. Judging from the menu, the kids would love Johnny O's.

	♥ 2:02pm Uncle Michael: I'd google best gyros in chicago and see which places are near to your lodging.

	♥ 2:04pm burke: Al's Beef is a local chain with a prototypical Chicago fast food menu.

	2:09pm Dean: Goddamn, I'm hungry. I don't mind looking like a tourist. Do the waiters at these restaurants recommend appropriate wines to go with the "beef"?
	♥ 2:09pm Rich in Washington: There was this cheesy chain franchise around here that did döner sandwiches but they were literally like a Kronos restaurant in Teutonic drag. Old German flags everywhere. Meat was virtually identical to that whirling monstrosity found in those generic Gyros joints, sans the tdziki sauce, feta. Is this a thing in the US?

	2:13pm Dean: Looks like Greektown is relatively close, at least a couple good options.
	♥ 2:14pm Uncle Michael: Greektown is GREAT but go there for sit-down Greek food. Get the gyros from a more modest location.
	2:16pm Dean: Good idea. At this rate my family will be dining about seven times per day.

	♥ 2:18pm Uncle Michael: The gyros will be good there...but you'll want to order different things. Greek Islands was always our go-to but there are other good places. Saganaki is delicious...not just a show.
	♥ 2:20pm Rich in Washington: Not a single Greek restaurant in my neighborhood - lots of crap gyros joints or places that make 'em, but our last, rather lackluster Greek joint closed a couple of years ago.
	2:20pm chromaphone: I would want a gyro if I hadn't just eaten 2 huge slices of macaroni and cheese bacon pizza.
	♥ 2:22pm Uncle Michael: And the thing is, Chicago is a great restaurant town...but we're just talking about the local staples...and we haven't discussed pizza.
	🛒 ♥ 2:22pm Parq: Rich -- opposite problem here. Greek restaurants, seeking four-star status, with opulent facilities filled with super-rich millennials throwing back overpriced cocktails and talking too loud.
	2:26pm Dean: The LA area used to have Papadakis Taverna, famous (or notorious) for being the site where USC's football team recruited players. I went there only once when I was a kid, ill-equipped to judge the fare. I vaguely recall the smashing of dishes.
	♥ 2:28pm Stevel: Great Japanese place at Clark and Polk. Decent fancy-beer bar about two blocks north, Villians.
	🛒 ♥ 2:28pm listener james from westwood: I may be in Chicago in the next 2 years, so these points will prove very helpful. Was there for a few too-brief days many moons ago, but went with business colleagues with very bland tastes and therefore didn't eat anywhere interesting.

	♥ 2:40pm Stevel: Also, on Michigan Ave. a place called The Gauge. Very busy at lunch, but that's because its great. Fanicer, for working types, meeting clients, etc. Excellent food and service. $13-$25 entres at lunch.

	2:48pm Dean: Man, that Gage has an 18oz bone-in ribeye for sixty bucks at dinner! I really love a good steak at a good restaurant. (Still dreaming of that Porterhouse at Tanino in Westwood...) But cripes, I can't deal with the price and, often, the volume. I once dined solo at Peter Luger's, where there was precisely one steak that a mere individual could reasonably consume. But I bet that Gage ribeye is good.

Won't have a car in Chicago, so we'll use the public transit, which is how we get around 1/3 of the time around here, anyway. When I travel solo I look for dining destinations, where that means "nice" restaurants. Too hard/$$$$ with young kids. Judging from the menu, the kids would love Johnny O's.

But cripes, I can't deal with the price and, often, the volume. I once dined solo at Peter Luger's, where there was precisely one steak that a mere individual could reasonably consume. But I bet that Gage ribeye is good.
