This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

it was news to me today that there is a sun araw / larraaji colab coming out
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

oh cool. me too. I know there was a sun araw remix of a laraaji track for some thing, but this is the first i've heard of a collaboration
  7:09pm walkingTrees:

Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

cool. that's nice news indeed
Avatar 7:14pm northguineahills:

Are you going to play any of Sun Araw's tracks they did in their residency in Jamaica?
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Ah, hello NGH! Yes, indeed. A little of everything tonight, which is just as well as I have five hours of show to boil

Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

also just read Treasure Island. while it can be a little hard to make sure you aren't stuck with a 40's-era abridgment, it's a real hoot and a holler. a true boy's adventure tale
  7:54pm walkingTrees:

oh yea...read that probably 10 years ago with a mind to revisit someday
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

that's "just read (red)" not JUST READ (as in a command)
  7:54pm spookcityusa:

Hello Alex with the knife and fork!
  8:18pm walkingTrees:

nice hyde! you ever get into any of moebius' work? he and jodo did a few colabs...the incal..great stuff
  8:19pm walkingTrees:

hyde do you have anything in the vein of Corto you could recommend?
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

I should read those books. I love that style
  8:24pm walkingTrees:

corto is great...found those books right after discovering tintin as a wee lad
  8:24pm walkingTrees:

--music to read comics to-- right here
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

oh boy have I ever read every tintin 20 times. tintin is so insane
Avatar 8:25pm hyde:

yeah, i know Moebius. i've bought some issues of Heavy Metal in my time! don't know that much else in the vein of Hugo Pratt. a lot of what looks good in European adventure comics seems to be untranslated. there's not much of a market for it here, i don't think.
  8:27pm walkingTrees:

ha, im slowly collecting issues of Heavy Metal from the start...moebius' work has been unavailable for a long time in the states but i think some stuff is getting republished later this year
Avatar 8:33pm hyde:

the thing i really want to read is The Eternaut, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld (who wrote some strip stuff that Hugo Pratt did art for) and drawn by the Argentine Francisco Solano Lopez. Fantagraphics published it in English a few years back, but I missed it and now it's rare and really expensive.
  8:33pm walkingTrees:

dude same here! that republishing looks amazing but the prices have skyrocketed
  8:40pm walkingTrees:

Avatar 8:57pm coelacanth:

Hello Evan and Explorers
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

the last real Tintin, Tintin and the Picaros, is far from the best but is real real weird. I love when Hergé gets his rather simple understanding of geopolitics involved in pastiches of extremely complicated insurrectionist goings-on
  8:59pm onoma:

i wonder which instrument is on your mind right now, Gila. wonderful, wonderful music
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

Hello, Coelacanth! and explorer Onoma!
  9:00pm walkingTrees:

that was the beauty of tintin (and herge) the evolution, some people are quick to point to the understandably offensive material in Tintin in the Congo.. but herge was growing and evolving the whole time
  9:03pm walkingTrees:

oh man, i wish: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VPMVbOKhKuU/TtUi_uK0aRI/AAAAAAAAABk/weUdUQP1yqQ/s1600/tintin-lovecraft-01.jpg
  9:04pm onoma:

fantastic show, Flash! i agree with every single thing you said earlier, it's really some of the most inventive, profound and mesmerizing music of this century...saw them twice in Paris, i won't ever miss an occasion to see them live
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

I agree. And I love Tintin with all my heart. Such an alt-dimension portrait of Europe and its empire in the early 20th century, with every panel a perfect cinematic composition.

That said, Hergé's racist tendencies/anti-semitic sympathies, while they did evolve significantly, are embarrassing and should always be noted and criticized. it's the only way to really save the work, I think.

That is why Blue Lotus is so fascinating though, it;s a portrait of a man critiquing his own racial attitudes toward the Chinese
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Thanks Onoma! would love to catch this stuff live... have never had the opportunity
  9:09pm walkingTrees:

tintint in tibet i believe solidifies your point. perhaps born flawed, tintin (herge) grew out of such narrow mindedness with time, and in my opinion is forgiven for past short comings
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

man, you never know where we'll end up... who would have thought we'd talk about tintin so much during a sun araw show

anybody get into the punishing punnery of the asterix comics?
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

similar format, same part of the library
  9:11pm walkingTrees:

excuse typos por favor....indica fingers
Avatar 9:11pm Little Danny:

@Flash - not sleeping, just paying my folks a visit in Hershey, PA, my hometown and the land of crappy-ass chocolate. Man, your show is a much-needed infusion of cosmic beauty.
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

so glad to have you, and looking forward to annexing your slot in an hour

PA chocolate no good? I have never heard anything about PA choco at all

and gladder than glad to inject some cosmos into your woulder-ice night
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

oh god, right: HERSHEY
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

man, I love this weird-ass track
  9:14pm walkingTrees:

heresy in terms of cocoa
  9:15pm walkingTrees:

this is good. the dog above us is going nuts tonight with these tunes
Avatar 9:15pm hyde:

i've read a couple of the Goscinny Asterix. they were ok, but i didn't love the ones i read. probably should delve deeper, someday.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

this is true. it is known. although i've been told by many a chef that hershey's syrup is pretty much irreplaceable for certain drizzle-requirements
Avatar 9:16pm Little Danny:

Looks like you've already served up some o' my faves: "Luther," "Horse Steppin'." If you're scrambling for tracks, I'd love "Thoughts Are Bells," "Bridal Filly" or "That Geosynchronous Feeling."
Avatar 9:16pm Little Danny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm melinda:

Who is depicted in the GIF at the top of the playlist?
Avatar 9:17pm Little Danny:

You a Bitchin' Bajas fan, Flash?
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

what i like about asterix, which is sort of dumb (i mean, i learned to love them as a kid and that's the key), is that it's vaguely about local insurrection and that it's caricatures are Fellini-Satyricon grotesqueries
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

  9:19pm walkingTrees:

any more comics in the vein of islands and planets that anyone cares to recommend?
  9:19pm walkingTrees:

i dig the bitches danny boy
Avatar 9:21pm hyde:

i am just now realizing that my local library system has tons of both Goscinny's Asterix and Lucky Luke books. must request! (i love the look of the art by Morris in Lucky Luke).
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

@Melinda I'm not sure who that is. it's from a Kenneth Anger film.
  9:25pm spookcityusa:

open up the gates is my favorite cut from this album
  9:25pm walkingTrees:

hands down my favorite reggae lp...Heart of the Congos. 'Epic" if i might say
  9:26pm walkingTrees:

lucky to have scored the Blood and Fire 2LP anmd CD release of this years ago...beautiful packages
  9:27pm onoma:

for me it's the track Nicodemus, when Lee Perry breaks the track in the middle and gives a true dub lesson...volume is way up right now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm melinda:

Whoever it is I like it, seems appropriate for the show.
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

@Danny: I only kind of like Bitchin Bajas, but maybe i need to give them another shot. They strike me as hewing a little too close to ersatz motorik, and thus make me want to listen to the real thing
  9:28pm walkingTrees:

melinda..this is a must for reggae collection....get the version with extended versions/dubs
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

@melinda and everyone: if you've never seen Kenneth Anger's films, they;re the coolest craziest things ever made
  9:30pm walkingTrees:

where to start with anger?
Avatar 9:30pm Little Danny:

@Flash, that's an excellent and not-inaccurate observation re: BB's. Their newer albums have gotten more ambient/textural and less motorik- erivative fwiw.
Avatar 9:31pm coelacanth:

i have a 2-lp comp called "blood and fire" by Niney (as producer) "and friends". should i assume it's only indirectly related?
Avatar 9:31pm hyde:

i'd start on Anger with SCORPIO RISING, myself
Avatar 9:31pm Little Danny:

@walkingTrees Kustom Kar Kommandos is incredible. It also added a layer of psycho-sexual depth to the Paris Sisters, whom I'm loved since.
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

i need to check em out, that's a development to keep eyes on. plus your word means worlds, D
Avatar 9:32pm Little Danny:

Thanks Flash!
  9:32pm walkingTrees:

blood and fire was a UK based reggae re-ish label
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm melinda:

I've seen clips but not a whole film. Will look into it.
Avatar 9:33pm hyde:

a readthrough of Anger's Hollywood Babylon is also an amusing way to get started
  9:34pm walkingTrees:

lots of great stuff on that label....if you can find the gatefold Heart of the Congos on the B&F label pick it up! truly one of the best reggae albums in my opinion and that version has the extended tracks and dubs. perry at some of his finest
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

any point is a good starting point with Anger

I've never read Hollywood babylon, Hyde. It seems insane. That story about FW Murnau dying in a car accident while having inappropriate times with an underage island boy... so inflammatory and criminally juicy
  9:36pm onoma:

writing the name Babylon while blasting the Congos...
  9:36pm walkingTrees:

thanks for the tips...gotta check out this anger cat
Avatar 9:36pm hyde:

@melinda fwiw, Youtube is loaded with Kenneth Anger movies, mostly of not the greatest ripped from VHS quality, but a good quick sampler.

@Flash it's a pack of lies, but it's a great read
  9:37pm walkingTrees:

f'ing love this album....love that cedic falsetto
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

@Trees I was trolling that fandor site for anger a while back, i don't think with any luck

watched Meshes in the afternoon though, and it doesn't get much better than that.
  9:38pm walkingTrees:

  9:39pm walkingTrees:

@flash...fandor is amazing....have you made any finds?
Avatar 9:40pm Little Danny:

Yes, Meshes in the Afternoon! Deren is tops.
  9:40pm walkingTrees:

fandor's mobile app is shit...doesn't show the depth of what they offer. and their new site design can prove tricky to browse by genre but if you muddle around you'll be rewarded
Avatar 9:41pm geezerette:

You Kenneth Anger fans;"Rabbit Moon","Eau d' Artifice", and the singular Cameron as the witch-like sort of Black rather than White Rabbit character in the Dennis Hopper film,"Night Tide".
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

haven't fiddled around too much yet... some more Maya Deren on there that I need to check out though. She's so ggooooooooodddd
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

and this is a belated gracias, WT. you know why. Spook too
Avatar 9:43pm geezerette:

Avatar 9:46pm hyde:

since we're talking weird experimental short movies, i'm gonna share my most recent fave find on Youtube. Films by Takashi, Ito from the 80's. They're amazing. SPACY (www.youtube.com...), GHOST (www.youtube.com...), THUNDER (www.youtube.com...).

Avatar 9:48pm hyde:

there's one called SCREW, too, that's pretty good

just want to share this little thing before i leave, try and listen to the track "sunshower" by dr buzzard's savannah band, it's...it's...incredible, the intro sounds exactly like Sun Araw's guitar! give it a try. it's from 1976
  10:01pm spookcityusa:

meshes of the afternoon by maya deren is one of the most beautiful films i have ever seen
Avatar 10:03pm Flash Strap:

will do Onoma

Melies is perfect magic, Spook. Crazy how some of the best films ever are the first films

As far as exp. film recommendations go, I gotta throw John Whitney into the mix. The Matrix is amazing
Avatar 10:03pm hyde:

@onoma that tune got sampled a lot
Avatar 10:07pm coelacanth:

Thanks Evan. Excellent program!
Avatar 10:07pm geezerette:

spookcityusa: Yep! Lumiere and Maurice Tourneur too!
Avatar 10:11pm coelacanth:

oh, you're not finished! that's Great! but is Little Danny okay?
Avatar 10:12pm geezerette:

Lotte Reiniger too, from the 20s.(Yes John Whitney!) (Yes early silents!)
Avatar 10:13pm Little Danny:

@coelacanth Ha, yes, I'm great. Just away from TX for 2+ weeks.
Avatar 10:15pm hyde:

later, coelacanth!

@Flash James Whitney made some cool movies too. I think these guys were brothers? YANTRA is great (www.youtube.com...).

i also noticed lately there's a whole bunch of good HD transfers of Jordan Belson movies for rent on Vimeo, but i haven't done that yet.
Avatar 10:15pm coelacanth:

Ha,okay! cool.
Avatar 10:15pm Flash Strap:

Haha yeah I should have mentioned: there is no cause for alarm! Danny is not just okay but great
Avatar 10:16pm hyde:

@geezerette i just made my way thru a whole slew of the earlier Reiniger shorts. Amazing.
Avatar 10:16pm coelacanth:

hey hyde, i'm not leaving i thought Evan was! i'm not paying enough attention i guess.
Avatar 10:17pm Little Danny:

Especially now that I'm vibing on all this reverb!
Avatar 10:17pm Flash Strap:

oh alright! i thought you were leaving too, C. glad to keep you on as we plow forward into the midnight
Avatar 10:17pm hyde:

@coelacanth welcome back!
Avatar 10:18pm Flash Strap:

  10:19pm walkingTrees:

  10:19pm walkingTrees:

these storms are what i will miss most of the front range, colorado.
Avatar 10:20pm Flash Strap:

man, I forgot you were movin, WT. how goes the prep and where exactly is the destination?
Avatar 10:21pm coelacanth:

Avatar 10:23pm Flash Strap:

I just 100% love this track. This is proper fucking psychedelic guitar music on every level, past present and future
  10:23pm walkingTrees:

oregon bound in a couple weeks...can't wait to get back to the land of evergreen! colorado has been nice but way too dry for my tastes...and sinuses.
Avatar 10:24pm Flash Strap:

from beautiful to beautiful. you pick nice places, WT
  10:24pm walkingTrees:

i think this was my first listen to these guys...from the jungle shadows...
Avatar 10:25pm Flash Strap:

heck yes
  10:28pm walkingTrees:

cannot downplay the enjoyment received from those first 2 JS mixes...my sound track moving south from seattle to san Francisco
Avatar 10:30pm hyde:

okie doke, time for me to drift off to sleepytown. night all. thanks Flash!
Avatar 10:30pm Flash Strap:

I'm so glad they had a home in your moving car. i loved those mixes when i made them. I always want to make a new mix and I will but it's like i'm doing exactly that every week on the show here
Avatar 10:31pm Flash Strap:

night night, comrade hyde
  10:31pm walkingTrees:

also must credit spook if he is still here..you 2 have been a wonderful source of sounds. my hats off, truly.
Avatar 10:31pm coelacanth:

g'night hyde.
Avatar 10:32pm Flash Strap:

yeah spook is a font of good sounds and a man of taste
  10:33pm walkingTrees:

the show is fire flash. wish i could tune in live more often!
Avatar 10:35pm Flash Strap:

i wish that as well! and gracias
  10:37pm walkingTrees:

likely... with this move i have learned my lesson not to sacrifice being able to crank tunes with a slightly nicer view ;)
Avatar 10:38pm Flash Strap:

how do you mean?
Avatar 10:44pm Flash Strap:

from here on we move into weirder territory still. off trail excursions and unedited improvs
Avatar 10:45pm coelacanth:

i'm looking for a new abode now. i don't respond to the ones that say "...in a quiet house."
Avatar 10:47pm geezerette:

March on fearless leader.
Avatar 10:48pm Flash Strap:

@ C: you just can't, not if you listen to music at all
  10:49pm walkingTrees:

accidentally moved into an affordable (by my previous san francisco standards) apt in a snooty neighborhood in boulder. the area, including denver, is void of cultural things im into overall.

also the normal occurrence of crossing a raging river over a downed tree on an impromptu weekday hike in the northwest soothes me as a drift off into slumber at night...

also i can't properly play and make music where i am due to neighbors.
Avatar 10:50pm Flash Strap:

that's the worst man
Avatar 10:50pm Flash Strap:

so i shall, Geezerette
  10:51pm walkingTrees:

hey, i'm packing boxes as we type! its good
  10:52pm walkingTrees:

where are you coelacanth?
Avatar 10:53pm Flash Strap:

yeah and where are you moving?
Avatar 10:54pm Flash Strap:

  10:55pm walkingTrees:

Avatar 10:56pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 10:59pm Little Danny:

Deeper and deeper you go Evan. Thanks for the great show. (And for filling in!)
  11:01pm walkingTrees:

  11:02pm walkingTrees:

out of curiosity.... number regardless.
Avatar 11:02pm Flash Strap:

My great pleasure, LD.

I wish, WT!
Avatar 11:02pm Flash Strap:

I'd be very curious as well
Avatar 11:07pm Flash Strap:

  11:09pm walkingTrees:

  11:09pm walkingTrees:

Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth:

'sorry.....i live in new paltz ny, and i'd like to stay near there but it's too expensive if i don't find a house-share situation; and that's always questionable, even with folks you've been friendly with for a few years.
Avatar 11:10pm Flash Strap:

i don't even know! Egyptian mythology is largely unknown to me. wish i knew more
Avatar 11:14pm geezerette:

Monotheist Pharoah. Sun was the deity.
Avatar 11:14pm Flash Strap:

@C: no kidding
Avatar 11:15pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 11:21pm geezerette:

  11:21pm walkingTrees:

if its Akhenaten..he's Nefertiti man. and yes a there is one god man..must have been such a hard sell then, monotheism?
Avatar 11:22pm Flash Strap:

wow, the heretic king. I can see Anger's affinity for him, in that case
Avatar 11:26pm Flash Strap:

only the 2nd time i've heard this one since it arrived
  11:28pm walkingTrees:
