Whoa. New intro ...
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:02pm listener james from westwood:

Is ... is the HBO theme gonna be the new in-theme? Because HELLS yes if so!
  3:02pm Cliff:

I wanna hear some bagpipes
  3:03pm JakeGould:

That was the HBO theme for the theme? Not bad, but still not 100%. Respect your experimenting!
  3:03pm Cooh John:

Time to start the weekend with djsheilab!
  3:05pm Cliff:

Hey Sheila, got any good Venus songs? That was the subject of the painting last hour

Hello Sheila and everyone! Glad to have you back!

hi sheilab, hi everyone.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:06pm JtotheK:

cool Gale Garnett tune. all i've heard by her is 'I'll Cry Alone' which is a great 45.
Avatar 3:07pm djsheilab:

Hello gang! It's so nice to be back + with lotsa new stuff. How'd ya like that HBO intro? Takes me way back. Just having fun with it though. Don't think I'm gonna make it official.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Michael 98145:

welcome back.
I love happening on a disc like Nippon Girls (2009) and realizing the thoughtful and informative notes were written by DJ Sheila. Very cool.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Primavera Sound was nice to hear, but it's also nice to have the Boom Boom back again.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm listener james from westwood:

If the HBO theme made the odd appearance down the line, even if it doesn't become the new lead, I wouldn't say no!
Related: There's a making-of documentary done by HBO, findable on YouTube, for the whole intro film that goes with that intro theme, and it is fascinating. Tons of work went into that bit of film and it was all pre-CGI. Cool stuff.
Avatar 3:13pm djsheilab:

@Listener James I think that bit of HBO theme music is so well written. And I love the build-up + intensity + explosion! It will definitely make another appearance at some point.
  3:14pm Cliff:

Sheila, it worked for me. I like the usual starter too. I'm pretty easy to please!
Avatar 3:15pm steve:

love the intro! couldnt place it at first and guessed it was from some sexy 70s movie.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:15pm listener james from westwood:

IIRC, HBO sponsors (or sponsored) the movies in Bryant Park each summer, and they would play it before the films, setting off a massive nostalgia bomb.
  3:16pm Cliff:

Terre T. would sometimes play the original version of Cherry Blossom Clinic instead of the later one, just to mix it up.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Fabio has a Finnish-language version of "Mr. Giant Man," too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Scott Williams:

Nothing says "SOMETHING IS GONNA HAPPEN" like that HBO theme; made me almost as happy as the theme from "Clue" a few weeks back!
  3:19pm Cliff:

Whoa, I haven't caught that one yet Ken from HP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Scott Williams:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm listener james from westwood:

And going back a bit, sometimes Laura Cantrell would put on the George Jones "Walk through This World With Me" instead of Tammy Wynette's. Always a nice twist. But that Tammy version tho ... damn.

Hey e'rybody! Cliff, how'd Mr. Let's Paint's Venus turn out? and the spaghetti? Once again, I got pulled out of my office in the middle of the show. This whole "having a job" thing seems to be getting in the way of my WFMU listening. I think it's gonna have to go.
  3:26pm Mandy:

every day this week I was like "Yay, it's 3PM! time for Sheila!" but then it was never Friday.....
  3:27pm Cliff:

JakeGould, if it makes you feel better, Daniel Blumin usually scoops Scott Williams on the new bin :)
  3:28pm Cliff:

JP, being self-unemployed is great (as long as you have enough money saved up)! He didn't get any meatballs or sauce on the painting, but he did paint Venus with blue hair and a hula hoop that was also Saturn's rings.
  3:30pm Cliff:

I thought the spaghetti looked good, though a little undercooked. Vicki said it was gross though and wouldn't try any of it. But John seemed to like its aroma.

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Guido from Cologne:

The podcasts are talking program formats, am I right? Otherwise conflicts with the rights collecting socities I guess.
Avatar 3:44pm The Contessa:

@Ken you can't beat a woodpecker except maybe with a kingfisher!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Adrian in London:

@Guido Isn't Mr Finewine's show also available as a podcast though?
  3:48pm MONEYBAG$:

Sheila, did you watch We Are Twisted Sister?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm listener james from westwood:

@Adrian: I think b/c many of Finewine's cuts are older, in some cases w/ orphaned rights, they feel more comfortable podcasting it. Or that's what I heard once.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Guido from Cologne:

Pebbles-level rarities and no persecursors?
OK, enough of speculation.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm listener james from westwood:

IIRC Scharpling's Best Show podcasts used to snip out the (usually contemporary) music bits for the rights rationale Guido mentioned.

@djsheilab: Big ups on the fight against the “War on Drugs.”
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Guido from Cologne:

I know thst the station has no permission to offer direct downloads of the average music shows. We had been discusding this sometime ago on Meghan's board.

@Bronwyn Biship-what is CCM?
Avatar 4:14pm Wild Neil:

@Bronwyn Bishop I mean...sorry!
  4:15pm JakeGould:

“After Hours” is great and only realized this past year that when Girffin Dunne’s character is trying to get into the club, the bouncer’s lines are basically a riff on Kafka, “I'll take your money because I don't want you to feel you left anything untried. Now, you keep the quarter…”
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Wild Neil: Contemporary Christian Music aka my guilty pleasure

  4:25pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: And… I believe I figured it out thanks to the YouTuber: “I was asked who are the trumpet players on the old HBO Feature Presentation Theme and Fanfare. The composer is Ferdinand J. Smith. The trumpets were Gary Grant (1st), Jerry Hey (2nd), Chuck Findley (3rd), and Allen Vizzutti (4th).”

And Ferdinand J. Smith on IMDB: “He composed the first HBO "Feature Presentation" jingle, which went with the now notorious "HBO in Space" introduction sequence.

Ferdinand Jay Smith composed the music for another iconic piece of televised packaging: He was responsible for the theme for the opening, bumpers, and closing of the ABC movies of the week from 1981 to 1987, better known as the "Star Tunnel" package.”

@MattnHillsborough: You talking about the Ritz CMJ show in 91/92 with My Bloody Valentine, Pavement and Superchunk? What has two thumbs and was at that show too? This guy!

@JakeGould @matt in hillsborough All the greats were there it seems!

Wish I coulda gone to that show, if only I wasn't 14 years old and nowhere near the venue at the time!
  5:17pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: You were there too? The world works in mysterious ways! I actually scored tickets right at the box office from some guy who just didn't want his; his loss!

When I saw MBV Mercury Rev opened, who I missed to my eternal regret
Avatar 5:19pm djsheilab:

@JakeGould Yes! The show changed my life. I got mono the next day and was in bed for three months. Ha!
  5:19pm JakeGould:

@Cliff: Well if it means anything, I chickened out going to Danceteria shows when I was 14 because the commute from the ass end of Brooklyn was murder I tells ya! Murder!
  5:19pm Cliff:

But at least your hearing's ok, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Adrian in London:

@Moneybags I missed Mercury Rev opening for Ride because of stupid train cancellations. Incidentally they played at the opening of Bella Union's little vinyl record shop in Brighton last night.
  5:21pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: Wow! I didn't catch mono but My Bloody Valentine's sons and light show made me deaf for 3 days. No mono, but hey!
  5:22pm MONEYBAG$:

after that show, all the voices on the radio sounded like the Chipmunks! It was my 18th birthday too
  5:23pm Cliff:

JakeGould - I think the only scene we had going on at the time here was scary straightedge vegans who'd stomp your face in with their Doc Martens if you so much as drank a beer in their presence

So I just stayed in my bedroom and listened to college radio

sheilab great to hear this Chip Taylor tribute. Agree totally that someone does not have to pass on to be heard. Bit like we do not tell our loved ones what we think of them until they are gone.
Saw Chip last year at a very small London venue, very disappointed that London could not show more respect with a bigger show. Just him and his old friend John Platania, think he is getting a little morose in his later years but heck what a songwriter. My favourite album is This Side of Big River. A country boy in NY.
