Favoriting June 13, 2016: Surrealism was the Battlehorse, with special guest Pau Riba!
Barcelonan songwriter & poet Pau Riba is known as the Father of Catalan Rock - he was singing in Catalan when it was illegal; his 1970 debut LP "Dioptria" is a legendary piece of European psych-folk, with echoes of Brazilians Raul Seixas and Os Mutantes and Brits Roy Harper and Incredible String Band meeting pure homespun Catalan Surrealism; and yet he's almost completely unknown in the US. Following an appearance with Cyborg Neil Harbisson at the annual Moogfest, Pau made his 1st ever NYC appearance at Baby's Alright on May 29. His performance today marks his US radio debut.

Great start! I'm surprised someone like Joe McGasko has never thought of doing a set of versions of "Then He Kissed Me". It would be a great idea.

Funnyman Joe McGasko replaces every 50th CD on the premises with "Then He Kissed Me." So one was bound to appear sooner or later.

It's bad enough for someone like me, seeing the country go off the rails like this during what is popularly called the autumn of my life. I can scarcely imagine what it's like to have been born near or after the turn of the century and never to have known a US that *wasn't* marked by this sort of regular occurrence.

I've been looking up info on Dodge City, Kansas, and trying to figure out why everyone wants to get the hell outta there. I guess because they kept saying it on Gunsmoke?
Avatar 4:29pm

Avatar 4:32pm
geezerette:

During those early years, Dodge City acquired its infamous stamp of lawlessness and gun-slinging. There was no local law enforcement and the military at Ft. Dodge had no jurisdiction over the town. Buffalo hunters, railroad workers, drifters and soldiers scrapped and fought, leading to the shootings where men died with their boots on. And that created a hasty need for a local burial place - Boot Hill Cemetery. It was used until 1878. For six years before Boot Hill, Dodge City had no official cemetery. Persons dying who had friends, money or standing in the community were buried in the post cemetery at Fort Dodge. Others, penniless or unknown, were buried where it was convenient to dig a hole.
