Hey everyone. Just discovered this Ultramarine track last week via a 20 year old fanzine called "Facelift". It features a sample of Robert Wyatt scat vocal and a bit of Gong's "Flute Salad". Ultramarine were major Canterburysceneheads, worked with Kevin Ayers as well... Nice selection Sasha!

@ the Canterbury wood-elf: great liner notes on that track. Thx.

good on you for engaging with it all, sasha. i am so often disappointed with this place on those occasions when the comments board is attacked for making a comment about something important other than music. i must say, the more these kinds of things happen, the more the rest of the world is bewildered by the American refusal to do anything about guns...

The gun-nut side is already engaging in civil disobedience - that's what the whole "open carry" movement is about.

r080 (in Prague for 16yrs):

Hello, HotRod next week is good news!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
sashajones:

I think there's a time and a place for vigils and mourning - what's frustrating is events like last night in NYC where almost all of the air time is given to white politicians and celebrities without putting any weight behind fully acknowledging the victims in a way that shows respect for who was disproportionately affected by the massacre in Orlando and by homophobic violence, generally -- LGBT people of color, especially gender non-conforming people. There has always been a great deal of civil disobedience, which is often sanitized or written over. There will certainly be more, and I hope it is seen and heard by those in power.

Yeah Parq, it doesn't require you to reload the playlist page - I'll bet this is so that they can put video streams there and not have them restart when you comment (this was a problem people kept having during the Optimized! stream last week)

  8:21am
JakeGould:

@sashajones: Pretty much in agreement. But that’s what’s frustrating about the U.S. in general; too much white-washing of events to make them palatable to someone consuming media. At least NY1 is actually covering the reaction in non-white gay communities to this whole mess.

Slight tangent but here in NYC there are these endless debates on bike lanes and making roads safer for cyclists. They always show the “Times Up” folks or generally white people who are casually cycling. Pretty much no acknowledgement of the world of delivery guys in bikes who are predominantly non-white and riding their bikes to deliver Seamless orders on crappy streets nobody is fighting to add a bike lane too.
  8:21am
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Thanks Sasha! My flight is on the 29th....still got a lot of packing and getting rid of stuff to do :)

Guido from Cologne:

Great stuff!
From where?
Avatar 8:22am
annie:

so, i've never spoken this out loud and i'm going to say it here because this is an open-minded group:

i think we are on the verge of a global/spiritual shift from "things as we know it" to a new paradigm of sexuality. ursula leguin wrote about this quite often. the shift will take many generations, and those who cling to the old paradigm are fearful of the new way, whch is true of all change. the new ways will be peace-related. this change is snail's-pace, yet rapid in the cosmic sense.
Avatar 8:23am
annie:

i haven't even spoken that on FB.... way too many attack-hounds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am
Marcel M:

One day we'll all be gay...

All joking aside, I agree, Annie. I think its possible that one day the label "gay" and "straight" wont really exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am

And, good morning all.

in Prague, that is
  8:29am
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

r080, I'll be teaching English as a second language, doing some side projects in tech, and hopefully on weekends have some time to travel around Europe.
Avatar 8:29am
ausmanx:

would love to think so, annie, but i believe that no change is possible now unless it starts from a fundamental understanding of the economic systems that are in place and exercise such ubiquitous control over everyone's lives. which is why i always advise people listening to what economists say, with the appropriate degree of skepticism. without knowing the enemy, we are lambs to the slaughter. if the whole world read Michael Hudson's books, THEN things would change...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am
sashajones:

Morning, Marcel! Though the goal is not to erase our identities, right? Labels are wielded in violent ways but they hold meaning for people and that should never be negated. People's identities deserve to be respected in the ways they want them to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32am
Marcel M:

I think Annie is talking about a slow change, meaning like, a shift in consciousness that could take hundreds of years? And specifically talking about sexuality? Or am I wrong, Annie?
  8:33am
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Thanks annie! Seemed like a good thing to do before I hit my 40's :)

Avatar 8:34am
annie:

all human evolution takes time, especially the spiritual aspect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am
Marcel M:

@Sasha: Its true, but I'm not talking about an erasing of identity, more of a unified identity that creates less barriers. Looking back in time, in some cultures, it was very normal to be homosexual. And it wasn't even referred to as such. I just think a lot of it is nurture sometimes. I do think one day the dichotomy will be much looser, is all.
  8:35am
JakeGould:

Kinda agree with Sasha. Removing all labels typically only benefits those who have never been oppressed.

It's the negative aspects of divisions that need to be overcome.
Avatar 8:36am
annie:

right on marcel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am
Marcel M:

Removing all labels is simplifying the idea.. its not what I mean at all. I'm talking about people progressing to a point where sexuality is not just one or the other or for some people both. Most or all people will be capable of having homosexual relationships so the labels will disappear. Though you don't have to agree with it, looking at it as just labeling is missing my point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am
Marcel M:

Its just a theory. Many "straight" people fall in love with or can enjoy sex with the same sex. I think its going to happen more and more and become a common thing that is not hidden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am
Marcel M:

But again, hundreds of years? 1000? Will we still be here? Who knows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39am
sashajones:

Marcel, I hear you. And the dichotomy that a lot of people reference already excludes a lot of people! Did not mean to make you feel like I was reducing your point, just wanted to continue the discussion! All I really mean to say is that in the society we live in, identity is important and probably always will be. It's definitely a nuanced thing.
Avatar 8:39am
annie:

many science fiction authors have always known this will come. i applaud the time-to-come when we are no longer focussing on gender-identity as an issue. as things shift, it will be easier to express these things without repurcussions.
Avatar 8:40am
annie:

those who are fearful/intimidated by it are the most vociferous.

thanks again, sasha, and have a good week off. i recall, like everyone else, HotRod is a great fill in - she too wasn't afraid to address the serious stuff on her comments board! i think you're right about sci-fi too annie; the good ones should be taken more seriously, and not dismissed as a "fantasy" genre (saw the new film from JG Ballard's HIGH RISE on the weekend - not a great film, but how good was he...)
